I have done a basic installation for a server. And then I have removed the screen and the keyboard because I have no place for them so my server is blind.I manage the server from my laptop using NX.I am using the root user because I can't stop the server with a normal user.I have installed the nvidia driver with the one click method.
Now without the monitor, the video fan is very noisy. When I click on the nvidia X Server settings button I get this message :"You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server."It seems that the driver does not load because it does not found any monitor.

what cloud computing is and i think it can help me with some of my clients i want to switch my clients from a normal ubuntu server to a ubuntu cloud. as of right now i have to send out a bill to them and if they dont pay i have to shut down there service till they pay. what i would like to do is to have a cloud where i can sell them based on what they use not a set price like it is now. and have them be able to pay there bill on the cloud and if they miss the bill then the cloud can shut off there service till its payed.
i dont know if this is possible and i have looked everywhere and all i can find is info on other businesses billing and now how to set up a cloud to do this. i wish there was some kind of tutorial for this. if anyone can direct me to some good notes/tutorials that would be very helpful. this could be a big changing point in my business if i can do this. it would save a lot of time and cash.

My X server restarts as soon as I log in as a regular user. Root user has access. I can log in both root and normal user in terminal and over SSH. I tried rebuilding and installing the proprietary NVIDIA driver, as it builds it's own config file for X. I've had no previous problems with X on this system. The last major change to the system before the last log out was the installation of MCNP5. MCNP5 was installed under the regular user; no root privledges were needed.

I have set up an NFS server on Fedora 13, and I am connecting to it with Fedora 13 and Ubuntu 10.
On both clients the command
Code:
works fine. On Fedora I can get into the directory with Nautilus and have read/write permissions as specified in /etc/exports on the server, but on Ubuntu I can only get into it from a sudo'd command line.
The ownership of the file on Fedora is "nobody" and on Ubuntu it's "user #500", with only people in the "500" group having access to it.
Obviously the permissions can't be changed on the client, but with the Fedora box being able to read/write to it with no problems I'm not sure what else I can do on the server to let normal users on the Ubuntu box read it.

So I am (excitedly frustrated) 3-4 months from the first working install of my linux server. So I am setting up a team to work on the server, I have a couple questions. first what the server will do.The server will host icecast (internet broadcasting program similar to shoutcast), podcast versions of said shows, and a website.
1. Will icecast or similar interfere with normal hosting of the website (though they are coming from the same server I believe its broadcasted on different ports so I imagine not)
2. Should I use a seperate server to store the mp3's or is it ok to keep them where on the same machine ( I would like to keep them on the same machine, logicly I would think it would cut down on load time)
3. I am worried about server maintaince in the way of hackers n such as well as hardware and software, memory usuage, bandwidth is there a checklist and maybe a way to automate this.
I should clarify, I know how to tell schedule a task but what if I need it in perverbial safe mode (yay windows) and I can't be there for it to happen and when its finished return to work as usual by its self.
4. I was thinking my content (file) manager, server maintainer, and I would have access to wlan when we can't physically be there, is this safe? Can I make it safer? What about ftp for my webdesigners and podcasters?
5. I started having doubt about myself using linux (ubuntu server) because for cost saving I am sacrificing a gui as well as general knowledge. I have previously installed and got working a server in linux before but I don't know what hole I could have possibly left open. Question would it be better and easier to use someone else to host my site for me such as amazon or o-f.com or should I keep going with linux, or buy windows server?

Recently upgraded from OpenSuse 11.1 to 11.2 and although it didn't go smoothly the first time (computer hung), I was able to complete the install and start. I have added and updated the required repositories.
The following problems persist:
1. I can't shutdown normally. The black screen before shutdown shows something on the lines of 'segmentation fault'...and also 'cannot find fstab or mtab'. I have to restart into Failsafe mode which shuts down properly.
2. Amarok keeps crashing. It used to work fine in 11.1 and I think its one of the best media players out there so I am wondering why. I do have other players and I have used the debugging reporter option for Amarok.

Just a little disappointed. I downloaded the 11.4 Gnome by about midnight, checked the CD for integrity, and started the Live CD, and it worked quite well. Installed it, but troubles started. OpenSuse 11.4 won't boot up in the normal mode, but would boot up in the safe mode only. I am now writing from the safe mode, but would like to boot up normally. It get stuck after the first verbose page. And not a move from there. The laptop is Lenovo T400, Core2Duo with 4GB RAM, screen 1440x900. No problem with any other distros up to now.

I've seen a couple of Tutorials on how to make new partitions (on Windows XP) so that you can use that space to do some organizing (as in i.e "a place to save games", another one "for Audio/mp3 files"...etc), and basically the simplest way (that I found up to now) was:
Click on Start menu - right-click My Computer - Manage - Disk Management - Unallocated - right-click Unallocated - New Partition
Then you get a new partition. Is that new partition suitable to be Linux Ubuntu's partition? Is that what making a new partition for Linux Ubuntu is, or is it another process? (It's the first time in my life to to perform the process of Dual-booting, so I'm kinda stuck up to that point).

But I do noticed that ubuntu 8.04.4-desktop come without gnuplot.
Is there some way to install gnuplot as a normal user, without root privileges?
Or, may be, some one can think in another way to solve my problem...

I need to mount a partition that is on a server (via samba).
I am doing the following in my fstab
Quote:
//server/www /media/www cifs rw,user,allow_other,default_permissions,credential s=/root/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,dir_mode=0777,file_ mode=0777 0 0
I can mount it but it just allows me to access with the root user. How can I do it to get access with any user?
Additional Data: I added "rw,user,allow_other,default_permissions" because I thought that would solve de problem but it didn't.

I have a problem with GUI under SuSE. As root I can enter but as normal user I can't. So the splash occurs I put user name and password but the system try to enter and later it comes back. I try from CLI, I make startx from command line, the same situation. Sometime the system informs me about a error (a temporary file from /tmp(.X0~ )I must remove, I did but next time it tells me that it can't load one module (it gives me a number).

I tried installing the Netbook Remix, but it ran horribly (I don't know why either, system monitor was saying both my cores were 90+%, but no processes were using over 10%. I have an E2160 dual core pentium @ 1.8Ghz each, and an 8600GT and everything else works fine with a normal installation. Anyway, does anyone know what packages that can create the sleek menus from the netbook remix on a desktop?

I can't log into my normal user account at bootup; it just bounces back to the login screen.
However, I can log into the user's terminal window from the root account.
I've tried deleting and re-creating the user, but to no avail.
Is there some special file that I could delete before re-creating the user?
The one that holds the (corrupted) authentication data, perhaps?

I've installed fglrx drivers with 1click install on openSuse11.3. If I try to boot in "normal mode" I end up in black screen. However if I boot in safe mode, then login and startx, everything works ok
Code:
~> fglrxinfo
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 Series
OpenGL version string: 3.3.10151 Compatibility Profile Context
Shows fglrx works OK, as well as overall performance is pretty good.
I've done
Code:
aticonfig --initial
radeon drivers is also blacklisted
but running (if it means something)
Code:
# depmod -a; lsmod | grep radeon
radeon 868858 0
ttm 64561 1 radeon
drm_kms_helper 32944 1 radeon
drm 221516 3 radeon,ttm,drm_kms_helper
i2c_algo_bit 6728 1 radeon

In summary, after updating from 11.2 through 11.3 to 11.4, normal boot works fine, failsafe mode hangs with two fatal errors - "Module atiixp not found" and "Module ide-pci-generic not found". i would like to fix this a) so I have a recovery position b) so I learn a little more. As 11.2 has gone out of support I decided to embark on the upgrades to 11.3 then 11.4 using the zypper method described on this site. I think failsafe boot worked ok with the original 11.2 install, but I never had to use it in anger, so I can't be 100% sure. I did not test failsafe in 11.3, just checked that the typical cd set of applications seemed ok before proceeding with the upgrade to 11.4.
I have an AMD processor, chip set and an ATI 3800 series graphics card, so I added the ATI repositories for 11.3 and 11.4 as i worked through the upgrades. At 11.4 there were some graphics glitches during normal and failsafe boot which were successfully fixed by adding "nomodeset" to both boot options. Normal boot works fine but failsafe boot hangs with the error messages above. Searching for failsafe boot errors is unhelpful since, in all cases I have checked, normal boot fails too. I did try removing "Xfailsafe" from the failsafe options which produced no change.
I am guessing that, in failsafe mode, the ATI drivers are not loaded into the kernel and the idea is to default to some safer drivers which, in my case, are not present for some reason. However, there seems to be little information on the origin or purposes of atiixp so I don't know how to go about fixing this. I have not really researched the generic pci driver issue, but I am guessing that this is a fall back when the expected atiixp is missing.

Last week I successfully installed Ubuntu/Gnome onto a 3 year old Toshiba Vista laptop which worked mostly brilliantly. Today I am trying to install it onto a 4 year old Toshiba XP laptop, but am having problems.
Laptop specs: Intel 1.50GHz 488MB RAM 60GB HDD, partitioned by Ubuntu on install into 30GB/30GB, both partitions over 75% free space The laptop, though old, still functions in XP, and the main reason we're switching it to Linux is that it has issues managing wireless, plus it's fun to do so - learning experience and all. The other laptop has better specs - multiply everything by 2 but Windows was much less reliable as, after all, it is Vista, and switching to Linux there was a necessity.
The Ubuntu is 10.10 and it's the same live cd I used to install it onto the other laptop. It's installed alongside Windows XP and the install proceeded without issue. However when booting in normal mode it becomes unresponsive very quickly - sometimes as soon as the five pips on the loading screen become orange, the last time it lasted a whole 2 minutes before becoming unresponsive.
In failsafe graphics boot it runs without issue. The update manager tells me it's up to date, and I have installed Wine through SPM while typing this. It's behaving as I'd expect it to, with tiny lags on scrolling sometimes (perhaps related to being in failsafe graphics).
Is there some setting (graphics?) I should change to allow it to cope in normal mode? I'm aware 488MB RAM is slightly under the recommended amount, but it evidently can cope in failsafe so would appear to be enough to function?

I have Ubuntu 10.04 installed on my desktop on it's own hard drive. The other drive has XP. Grub is on the Ubuntu drive. Everything works fine from the Grub menu. but I have lost the ability to boot from the XP drive. This would be a problem if the Ubuntu drive failed or if I wished to remove it. I would like to repair this, but my immediate problem is with a new install on my laptop:
We are going away for 2 months and I want to be able to continue to learn Ubuntu while away. I want to install it on a new external USB drive on my Win 7 based Toshiba Satellite (ADATA Superior SH93). I did a trial run up to where I have to choose the drive to install to. But based on my experience with my Desktop, I stopped there. I can't afford to have the Win 7 boot disabled.
My question: How do I install 10.10 (or 10.04) to a laptop USB drive without affecting the ability to boot from Windows when the usb drive is removed?
