Server :: How To Check Multiple Processes?

Jun 13, 2011

I have running license server on my server. Right now I would like to write small status script and check if software is running. My software include 3 deamons:

1) daemonA
2) daemonB
3) daemonC

My script should check, if each of this deamon is running. If all deamons are running then script should print short output: "License server is running" if one of this daemons is not running, output should "License server is not running". Is it possible to write small loop to check it ? Let say, loop will take new daemon name from deamons pool and will check if its running. Sometimes I need to check more than three daemons of one Program and I dont know how to write good script for this. Maybe somebody could help me with this loop that in the future I could also use; daemonD, daemonE, daemonF.etc.etc. if all daemons from pool is running then..."Software is running"

Ubuntu :: 10.4 Gnome Desktop Is Spawning Multiple Processes?

Jul 27, 2010

This is the second new install of 10.4 on the same machine with the same issue. After boot, as soon as user logs into the desktop, sys mon shows cpu at 100 percent and a steady climb in ram usage. several processes are spawned continuously until all ram is consumed and then moves on to use scratch space.

Using top, the process count moves into over a thousand total processes. Some investigation using top, ps, and digging into the /proc folder shows a ppid of 1 If the machine is booted to shell, top shows 120 processes and is stable. Some of the processes running repetitively are the gnome toolbar, nautilus, and I wish I was clear headed enough to write the others down before I left work. I can certainly get a more complete list in the morning.

I have swapped out ram, and the processor with no success. I have also tried apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop then installing with apt, this did not resolve it. As mentioned at the top of the post, this is the second install with these symptoms. The first install started showing the issue about 10 hours after first boot. On this second install, all was working fine for a couple days before this started in.

Software :: How Force Multiple Processes To Run On Separate Processors

Sep 2, 2010

when I start my application it creates a message queue and forks a process. The child process reads multicast packets from the network and writes to message queue. The parent process reads packets from message queue and compares source ip and sequence number (it is part of payload) with last 64K packets received to see if it has received a duplicate packet. I am using message queue as a buffer because I do not want child process to drop any packets while it is comparing it with previously received packets. The message queue is large enough to contain 64K packets. To compare the old packets I am using array of structures as circular buffer. During a spike I may receive 100 - 120 packets per milli second.

When I run my application, the parent process keeps up with the child process, I can see that with "ipcs -q". After about 30 seconds it cannot keep up and the size of message queue keeps increasing until it is full. When I run "top" I can see that one CPU/core is hundred percent busy while other 7 cores are idle. It seems that both processes are running on same core and the child process gets interrupts everytime there is a packet on the net and starves the parent process.I am running RHEL 5. The system has 24GB memory and my application is the only application running on it. It is a HP G6 server.

Programming :: Perl - Multiple Child Processes In Parallel?

Sep 3, 2010

I'm looking for a way in Perl to be able to take a list of servers, ssh multiple commands to it and store the results. If I do this process serially, sometimes one server will hang the whole script and if it doesn't, it still takes hours to complete.

I'm thinking what I need to do is make a parent loop that calls out a separate process that passes the server name to the child sub process and then executes all the commands I have defined in its own process. If one server 'hangs', at least that won't stop the script from doing all the other servers in the list.

I'm guessing using the fork() command would serve me best, however, all the online descriptions I have found have been vague at best.

Software :: Selectively Check In Multiple Files Using SVN?

Dec 24, 2009

I have a really elaborate website project and I'd like to check in all the code to an SVN repository WITHOUT checking in all the jpg, pdf, sql, .mobi files, etc. I have subclipse installed on my local machine as part of Eclipse, but downloading the entire site and doing it file-by-file would take a very long time.

1) check in certain file types in a directory (e.g, /home/foo/public_html) while excluding certain file types (e.g., *.jpg, *.pdf, etc.) and subdirectories (e.g. exclude home/foo/public_html/images) in that directory.

2) I need to specify that this initial checking of my entire project goes into the /trunk folder in my SVN repository -- and not the root, not 'branch' subdir, etc. Also, I need the directory structure of my files to be preserved. that is to say i don't want /includes/conf/config.php to be at the root of my trunk folder in my repository.

3) I need to specify a comment that is applied to all of the files I'm checking in. E.g., "this is the initial checkin dated 12/24/2009, happy holidays!"

General :: Multiple Servers Or One Server With Multiple VMWare?

Feb 7, 2011

I'm looking at setting up a couple automated systems: Here are a few examples:

* Internal accounting system to download and process emails
* Public web server to visit

I could put each system on its own separate box -- for example, it's generally good practice to separate anything that external users have access to (such as a webserver) from internal processes such as accounting. Now, rather than dishing out the money for two separate servers, could I get away with just installing new instances of VMWare on the same box for each system?

To give you an idea, these are not large scale computationally sensitive systems. The accounting one is simply downloading and tallying emails, and the latter is just a webserver with maybe 5 hits per day on a good day. I could definitely pick up a new box for say $50, but I wanted to know the general practice of using VMWare on the same box versus two separate boxes.

Server :: Limit User Processes ?

Feb 10, 2010

I have some domains on a VPS server. Typical account memory usage for all domains runs at 50% of available, but I have a problem. One domain is causing me trouble because intermittently traffic will spike on that domain, causing so many requests within 1 min that I exceed my memory allocation for my entire VPS package. Apache is then killed but the virtualization software and Apache must then be restarted.

A sample snippet from tops right before the sever went down would like like this:

All of that memory usage adds up. I would like to "throttle" the number of processes that user/domain can run. I think this would be a quick and easy way to keep the domain from taking down my entire VPS. My understanding is that I could do this with the /etc/security/limits.conf file.

Is that correct?

I have never done this before. Do I want to set a hard or soft limit? I think if I wanted to limit the number of processes for "coldclim" to 15 I would add a line to limits.conf like this:

Code:

Assuming that is correct, can anyone tell me how the website would respond once it reached its limit? Would visitor queries become sluggish, or would the website not come up for them at all?

I try to write a script which would kill processes of users who are not logged in. My approach is to find out what users are logged in and then kill processes of all nonsystem users who fail the test of being logged. I use `w` for finding all logged in users, but apparently there are users on the list which `w` gives me who own absolutely no process in the output of `ps aux`. How do I log off those users, since killing their processes wont work (since they own no processes)?

I have a problem with the permission of the directories under /proc, they are readable and accessible only by Owner (they have permission 500 instead of the usual 555) As a consequence, the processes are visible only to the Owners or to Root. For exampleif I want to check if there is mysql

I see it only with the user mysql or with root because the directory has permission 500

This problem obstacles the functioning of some applications that should check the existence of some processes managed by other users. At the beginning all was working well. But after a while the problem appeared and I dont know which is the reason of it. how to restore the standard management of permissions of / proc?]

I have a Ubuntu server Maverick 10:10.

Something misterious to me (I'm still a Linux newbie) is that TOP reports a total of 7.5GB used ram but very small percentage for single process (0-1%). Memory consumption starts at 1GB/8GB after reboot and in three days running gradually increases up to 8GB. I'm practising with Linux, but I still miss a lot to understand what's happening on my system. For instance, are there linux kernel logs saved somewhere that I can look at?

Server :: Finding Child Processes Spawned From Screen?

Aug 25, 2010

I have a situation where I have several screen (/usr/bin/screen) sessions running. 2 of the screen sessions (ps1 and ps2) run a script that launched SipP with specific parameters. 1 script starts SipP and has it make 50 calls where the other makes only 20 calls. However The script is configured where we can change how many calls it makes if needed.

So the problem is, due to issues with SipP, we must restart everything every 12 hours (at maximum). So I am trying to work out scripts to stop the SipP processes cleanly. In order to do so I need to figure out which SipP process is spawned by which screen. i.e. which sipp was started by screen session ps1, and which one was started by screen session ps2.

Now I can do ps -ef | grep <number of calls configured> to find out but then I would have to change my stop script every time we reconfigure how many calls are made, and have a separate stop script for each screen session. I would much rather be able to send the screen name as a parameter to the stop script and have it work no matter how many calls SipP is configured to make. Also your standard kill -1 <PID> does not shutdown SipP cleanly. So working out those details is a bit more tricky. Anyone know how I can determine what processes are spawned from a specific screen session?

Server :: How To Determine Swap Space Usage For Processes

Jan 10, 2011

On one of my servers the "free" command tells me that a lot of swap space are in use. What I'd like to do is to determine which processes have been swapped out. I tried issuing "top" and sort by the "swap" column, but this doesn't seem to provide correct values - when performing the same excersize on another server with close to no pages swapped out, the sum when adding the swap value for each process greatly exceeds the swap usage reported by "free". So how do I go about determining the swap space used for individual processes?

Programming :: Server Socket Assigned By Children Processes ?

Aug 27, 2010

I am currently programming a suite of daemons in c++ on CentOS 64. More or less all those daemons are SOAP servers, with the SOAP part handled by gSOAP.

One of the daemons is a monitor sitting on a certain server and more or less just checking if the other daemons are up and running - but also offering a SOAP interface to get the 'current situation' on the machine.

Whenever the detected situation does not correspond to the defined (i.E. a process which should be is not running) it is started up.

This part, I implemented via a system() call that starts the other process.

I was a little confused when lately often this monitoring process would not start because it could not bind its server port - the one the SOAP server is listening on.

And confusion got bigger when netstat told me that the port is assigned to one of the processes that were before started by the monitor..?

Even better: if I then kill the process of which netstat tells me it holds the port, the next netstat shows the next monitor-started process as the one listening on the port..

Only if I kill all the processes that were started by the monitor, the port is released and I am able to launch the monitor again.

Now I wonder: why does this port get 'reassigned' to the children - and most of all: how can I prevent this from happening?
