Server :: Squid NTLM Authentication Without Active Directory

Nov 11, 2010

I have a squid server currently running with basic authentication. This is a must because we constantly have different people using different machines but the rules must be set per user, not per machine.

We also have a lot of users coming and going. So every time a new user comes to the office I have to manually create a user for him so he can authenticate.

Anyway.. We do not have any windows servers so no Active Directory. But I need some solution to pass the windows login to Squid.

First question: It seems I am using NTLM currently for samba as the person can map their home directories on their windows box withuot authenticating. Why can I not use it for squid?

Second question: Can I make my Centos server into an AD server?

I know how to wipe it clean at intall time. Is that the root directory? And, is /boot the actual boot directory? I'm just having a hard time uderstanding that. As I said, I just want a quick itemized list, step 1, step 2, etc, from partitioning, creating file system, mounting, etc. in the right order.

General :: How To Check Squid Cache

Nov 11, 2010

I recently finished installing Squid 3.1.9 and I think I've done installing correctly with its feature of minor configuration changes. It accepted requests on port 3128 and created and the created some numerical or binary (I guess) files in /usr/local/squid/var/logs, My problem is how can I fully verify if the cache is really storing Internet Files? I've read some forums in the Internet replied to me to try the command: cat /usr/local/squid/var/logs/cache.logSo I did tried it and it gives me this output:

General :: Squid Proxy Server For Web Access With Active Directory Authentication

Jan 28, 2010

I'm fairly new to Linux and very new to Squid and am having authentication issues! I am using Oracle Enterprise Linux (which is basically Red Hat without the branding) and wanting to use Squid Proxy Server for web access with authentication to Active Directory. I've found a number of articles about this online and all of them say to use auth program squid_ldap_conf which should be in /usr/lib/squid/. I don't have a squid directory in /usr/lib for starters and my squid binaries are in /etc/squid but there is no squid_ldap_conf in there either. I have installed the latest version of Squid (3.0) to see if that helped but I still cannot find the authorisation program.

Server :: Squid/Dansguardian - Active Directory Authentication With Prompt For Credentials

Oct 5, 2010

I would like to be able to get squid or dansguardian to authenticate a user account against active directory so that a users browsing activities can be logged.

I can find lots a very useful info on how to set up ntlm_auth etc, but all of these methods produce a pop up window when the user launches the browser.

I'm posting this thread because I would like to be able to authenicate, but without a pop up window. Is there a way of automatically carrying out this authentication so that the user is unaware of it.

We've previously attempted authenticating against an NT4 PDC, but the users worked out that they could use any user account on the network, not just the user that was logged in which kinda defeated the whole idea of logging the users activity.

My current setup is:

Windows 2003 AD
Windows XP Clients, soon to be converted to windows 7.
Fedora 11 running squid and dansguardian.

Debian :: Computers On Network Cannot Access Internet Via Squid Cache / Reolve This?

Jun 16, 2009

I have installed debian to run Squid cache as a caching proxy.
Ive been bashing away now for 2 days and i have managed to install squid (i first tried manually, but that did not work so i used synaptic software packager to install it (from Administration menu)
That went well, thereafter i installed webamin to work with squid in a GUI

I have managed to start squid and added my range of IP addresses to the ACL list
I have added the proxy restriction too.

Now, i tried to test it.
I opened Iceweasel Web browser (on the same machine) and setit to use the Proxy server: localhost and port:3128
That works fine.

But when i try to change the proxy setting to my machines ip (where squid is installed) :
Proxy server: 10.0.0.35 and port:3128
That does not work.
Am i missing something, please help
I then tried to set another windows PC on the network to:
Proxy server: 10.0.0.35 and port:3128
That also does not work.

I also edited the conf file to http_access allow all, but i do not know if i have doen it correctly, but maybe there is another problem?

Debian :: Cache A Directory Tree?

Nov 30, 2015

I have a home storage of many drives which are seldom accessed, and extremely seldom written to. So, I made several RAID1 arrays with "write-mostly" drives in each one, so that all the drives spin down after a while, and if they are accessed, only one drive in each array has to spin up. This way, I hope to minimize the risk of losing anything due to mechanical shock or wear.

But it was not so easy. First, the write-mostly drives did spin up on every read request due to a bug in the kernel, so I managed to get the fix accepted into the newer kernels (which is my largest contribution to the Linux development so far. See [URL] .....) Now, if I read directly from the array, it works as expected (only the first drive spins up); but if I create a filesystem there (ext4) and read from it, the second drive still spins up anyway. (Does ext4 write something when it reads a file?.. I have it mounted with relatime, so AFAIK it shouldn't...)

Well, I thought, I'll just mount the filesystems read-only and remount them if I need to modify the data there, which is not very often, to say the least. Also, this way the drives don't have to spin up every system shutdown to unmount the filesystems; during a power outage, it used to take a lot of time for them to spin up one by one just to unmount, while my UPS had to survive long enough for them to finish. That's one more problem solved.

But I decided to improve even further. Sometimes I just want to see the contents of those arrays without even accessing some files (for example, when I accidentally click the wrong network drive button in Windows, or when I just want to see if I have something there or not). If I read the directory trees during startup and keep them cached, then those drives won't even have to spin up at those moments! The question is, is there a way to do it? I remember Linus boasting about our kernel being the best at caching the filesystem trees, and I know there is vmtouch [URL] .... which allows us to keep some files cached, but what about the directory tree itself?.. If I simply "find" all the files there, it seems to work, but they get evicted from cache sooner or later...

Ubuntu Servers :: Cache Directory And File Structure In Memory?

Aug 11, 2010

i am running Ubuntu Lucid x64 as a fileserver that shares its files via SFTP, NFS and Samba. Currently the hard disks are configured to go to standby if they are not needed. This works perfectly as long as no one browses the shares or my HTPC is running: That one repeatedly looks through the shares for new music or movies. In other words my problem is that the disks are spinning up a lot more often than they should have to. Additionally the spin-up time delays the response time while browsing. Since the machine has a lot of unused RAM i want to tell the kernel that it should keep the directory structure in memory. That way the disks would not need to spin up every time someone browses through the directories.
