I want to be able to assign the group "readers" read access to guests/c1 but it says access denied. but it shows r-x acsess. i want to be able to control who has read access and not just give it to everybody.
I am using CentOS 5.5 and I created few users (useradd john etc.) and now I want to assign privileges to this user on some directories and files in those directories. For example I want to give read privileges to directory "/documents" and all of files under that directory.

I've only seen fields that deal with name, organization, etc., not with application-specific access control.
I have to assign certain access privileges to users authenticated via LDAP server based on the privilege level mentoned in the LDAP server. How to attain this.
I need to create a user with least permission on the production server. He should only be able to read or execute the files that to be specific. For example: I just need to give him a set of commands to run.Besides those command execution He should be prevented to run any other command and He should not able to create any files(write permission).
How would i proceed about this.
I'm setting up Ubuntu Karmic on my sister's old computer for my nephew, he's quite young so my sister asked to install some content filtering. I'll first setup an OpenDNS account and I've installed and managed to get dansguardian and squid working on a virtual machine to try it out. so far it's working pretty well, but I need to secure it form the inside out.
I was thinking of blocking specific outbound ports so he could not bypass the proxy. because by default the firefox configuration can be easily changed. so I have a couple of questions.
1. is it possible to block outgoing ports on Ubuntu?
2. is that the best method?
3. is there anything else I should be aware of to prevent subversion?
lastly, this question is probably unrelated to this board but I've set up a cron job to update a dynamic ip with OpenDNS, the problem is that the password is in clear text in the user's crontab, can I play with permissions? is it possible to run the job under a root account and deny read/write access to a normal user?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have no ACLs in place yet but want to use a user called ldap-auth-user to bind to the ldap servers directory from the client servers. However I keep on getting ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49). Error. I know the UserPassword is correct because I can log into a server using that id and password through the LDAP directory. I am guessing it has something to do with the way I created the account.
This Works:
ldapsearch -D 'cn=Manager,dc=test,dc=com' -x 'uid=testuser' -W
This Doesn't:
ldapsearch -D 'cn=ldap-auth-user,dc=test,dc=com' -x 'uid=testuser' -W
Here is the ldap-auth-users entry in the directory

Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.

So as root I added myself (username freddy) to the group uucp. This is just temporary, for while I work on this code and try different stuff as user freddy. Once the code is established and I have a single program with a fixed name, I plan to give myself an entry in /etc/sudoers that will allow me to run the finished program.

I thought that if I was a member of group uucp which is associated with /dev/ttyS0 that I would be given rw access to /dev/ttyS0. What am I missing here?

I have a file server on my network. It is accessed mainly by linux machines throught NFS, but sometimes I need to access it from windows, and I managed to get Samba up and running with only one share with no password, which is what I want.My users have their "private" folders which are just chmodded 700, and under NFS it works fine, but on samba I get, of course, access denied.How can I configure samba so that it asks a password to access those directory? They can become separate shares, and have their own username and passwords (not the ones in /etc/passwd in the server), I don't care.

My network ip block is 192.168.7.0/24 and facebook.com is restricted for all with squidGuard, but i want to allow facebook.com only in 192.168.7.51/32.

I have a Linux mail server (Fedora). This server was set up long before i joined this organization. Now I have these issues I would request assistance:
1. I am not able to access the Graphical User Interface(gui) on this machine. Startx does not work. I have also tried using combination keys alt+ctrl+f...keys but no progress. As a result am not bale to do some tasks.
2. The clamav that is on the machine has since become outdated. Efforts to update it to latest versions have failed. How do i get to update clamav and protect my system?
3. Because of not being able to access the gui as well as the inability to update clamav have led to my server apparently sending spam mail which in turn have led to my public ip being black listed in a number of sites. Now how can i secure this server so that it stops sending the spam mail and hence avoid future blacklisting?(NB am using postfix and the server sits behind a router which connects to the Internet)
4. I have observed that the server has some iptables rules set but everytime the server restarts the rules stop. I have to manually restart them again to run. How do I sort this?
