Server :: Windows 7 Can't Write To RHEL 3 Server When Files Greater Then 1kb?
Mar 12, 2010
we are running a Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES release 3 (Taroon Upd 5) Kernel 2.4.21-32.ELsmp since several years. The server hosts an old ERP system who will be replaced at the end of the year. However it is necessary that some collegues are able to write some files to that server regulary. Since we are running Windows 7 on several machines, those users aren't anymore able to write to the samba share. Getting files from the share works fine.
But the problem seems not to be situated at the samba service because also the transfer using SSH (WINSCP) from any Win7 system to the server doesn't work.During testing we recogniced that transfering files smaller then 1kb works fine ... any file greater then 1kb ends up in an connection abort. This works with samba and also using SSH.All the workarounds editing some registry entries in Win7 for improving the interoperability between vista / win7 and samba don't work for us ... and also seem not to be the source of the problem. Is there a general known incompatibility between our RHEL version / kernel and Windows 7 regarding file transfers?

I am using RHEL 5 on my server. The client machines are windows XP.File sharing is through samba server which is working okay. On this file server there is a shared directory for users. This directory contains files which are used by various users through oracle APP. and DB server.
At present the folders under the "shared" folder are having all permissions i.e. 777. To restrict certain things, I want that users may read and modify the files but may not be in a position to move or delete the files. How to set the permissions on the folders/files in this scenario?

I have a dual boot set up on my Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop I have Windows Vista originally installed and i installed RHEL 5 a while ago they used to sit happily together. However After upgrading RHEL 5 from 5.3 to 5.5 yesterday and configuring grub to boot into Vista by default it refuses to do that and boots into RHEL 5 by default.
The laptop used to boot straight into vista but i thought i,d learn how grub works by configuring it, after the rhel5 upgrade. But after changing the DEFAULT value from 0 to 1 and then back from 1 to 0 still grub only boots into RLinux RHEL 5 by default regardless. Can someone help me please i need to make my laptop boot straight into Windows Vista by default and not RHEL 5 This is what my grub.conf looks like
# grub.conf generated by anaconda
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE: You have a /boot partition. This means that

I have 6 RHEL 5 Servers, 1 5.2 32-bit Master Login Server, which services the other 5 RHEL 5.3 64-bit App Servers, for Login and Authentication. I am wanting to intigrate these with my Windows AD. I use Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard. I currently have the RHEL servers setup to have the 32-bit (5.2) server as the NIS Master, serving NIS out to the remaining 64-bit(5.3) servers.
I also have a Windows Server 2003 R2 Domain Controller serviceing my Windows AD. I would like to be able to ingrate them to be able to use Password Sync and Single Sign-on. I am not real worried about having Kerberos or LDAP running, because the systems are NOT physically connected to any external source. (The network is completely self-contained). I am just wanting to be able to use Password-Sync and DNS between the different networks.
My questions are as follows:
1) Would it be better/easier to make the Windows Server the NIS Master or the RHEL 5.2 Server?
2) If I make the Windows Server the NIS Master, how would that effect the remaing servers who get their NIS info from the Redhat Master?
3) If I keep the RHEL Master as NIS Master, how would I intigrate that with AD and have both shared Passwords and DNS?

I'm trying to rsync files and directories from a RedHat linux host(v 4.5 & 4.7) to a Windows server 2003R2 Standard Edition with cygwin running. I'm executing the rsync command from the cygwin shell. The transfer involves rsync'ing approximately 1 TB of data from the linux server to the windows server. After about 280+GB of data transfer, the transfer just dies.
There seems to be no particular file or directory that the transfer stops at. I'm able to rsync GB's of data from other linux hosts to this cygwin server with no problem. Files and directories rsync fine. The network infrastructure is essentially the same regardless of the server being rsync'ed in that it is GB Ethernet running through Cisco GB switches. There appear to be no glitches or hiccups across the network path.
I've asked the folks at rsync.samba.org if they know of any problems or issues. Their response has been neutral in that if the version of rsync that cygwin has ported is within standards then there is no rsync reason this problem should happen.I've asked the cygwin support site if they know of any issues and they have yet to reply. So, my question is whether the version of rsync that is ported to cygwin is standard. If so, is there any reason cygwin & rsync keep failing like this?
I've asked the local rsync on linux guru's and they can't see any reason this should fail from a linux perspective. Apparently I am our company cygwin knowledge base by default.

What are the bare minimum configuration files that would be needed to rebuild a RHEL server? We are thinking about creating a generic base image and then just copying over the necessary files (fstab, hosts, networking, etc) to get a failed system back up and running in the least amount of time possible. I am fairly new to Linux and have suggested that we have a share on a redundant server that is /server_configs/Svr_name/*.* (names are subject to change and *.* would be all of the pertinent config files to make a fresh build customized enough to emulate the failed server). Is this even possible and/or plausible?

I experienced a full hard drive yesterday due to a massive error_log. We took care of the errors, but later found out we were missing files, including a MySQL database table. Having a shopping cart and ecommerce stuff on the site, we found that some of those files were missing, too.Does RHEL 5 have some sort of feature for automatically deleting files when the partition is full? If it does, I want to turn it off.

I have configured NIS, DNS, NFS and DHCP servers at my home network. I can easily authenticate another Linux machine to these servers and make that machine as a client and also users can locin using the automounter. My Question is, is it possible that by using the same setup I can authenticate a windows Xp machine and make it as a client, and also users can login using the passwords that I have provided on my NIS server?

I am having an issue with a Chrooted SFTP User not being able to write files.
The permissions are setup correctly as if I remove the Chroot the user can write files correctly.
User has a transfer folder which they should be able to write files to and read from, this works correctly until I apply the snippet from sshd_config file below then the user can only read files. I have tried tweaking the permissions but this doesn't seem to have helped at all.code...

I have a Windows 2003 server with fiber attached volumes (NTFS) that I would like to mount readonly on a linux system to back it up to tape. The fiber device will allow me to present the volume R/W to one host and R/O to another, however, the R/O system doesn't see any of the changes made by the R/W server. In other words, how can I make a readonly volume refresh, scan for changes, or update without un/re-mounting it?
Is the "mount -o --bind" option what I want? From the MAN is doesn't seem right... the option "sync" seems slightly more promising but I think I'm just grasping at straws here. The best I have come up with is a cron job to unmount then mount the volume periodically.

Having some issues setting up sendmail on a (basically) blank RHEL 5.5 server setup. My ultimate goal is to be able to automagically send logs / errors / notifications to ourselves from the server.
Our basic setup is a Win 2003 domain with exchange running on mail.domain.com.au.
I've edited the '/etc/mail/sendmail.mc' and added the :
Code:
line to it.
Also added the domain (domain.com.au) to the '/etc/mail/local-host-names' files
Also edited submit.mc and added
Code:
When I try and send a mail from root or a test user to one of the domain accounts, it seems to go fine, i.e no errors are reported but it never gets delivered.
From the mail logs:
Code:
So it seems to be sent to the queue no problems and when I check the queue :
Code:
Total requests: 0
Not nothing ever gets received. Am I missing something? I have read and read and read but dont seem to be getting any furthur.
So in the end this server doesn't need to do anything except be able to send mail from root to an external mail address.

In oreder to run an application software on RHEL 3 ES server, I created a link forcefully using following command from root id:
# cd /lib64/tls/
# ln -sf libc-2.3.4.so libc.so.6
before that I copied file libc-2.3.4.so from a workstation with OS RHEL 4 WS so that a link can be created.
Now I am unable to run any command except cd & pwd and it gives error messaage as given below:
ls:relocation error:/lib64/tls/libc.so.6:symbol _rtld_global_ro,version GLIBC_PRIVATE not defined in file ld-linux-x86-64.so.2with link time reference.
Before running this command libc.so.6 was pointing to libc-2.3.so file in path /lib64/libc-2.3.2.so.
I am now unable even to open a new window on the server. Please send me some solution as early as possible because this server is running production data and many users are runnig application on this server.

I have a RHEL 5 server with 32 bit architechture that is not recognizing more that 4 GB of RAM and I am trying to locate a version of the kernel-PAE package that will work well with the 2.6.18-53 kernel. I found something on Open VZ called ovzkernel-PAE that is built for the 2.6.18-53 kernel [URL]
and wanted to find out if there were any known issues with this release before I attempted to install it. Is anyone aware of any issues with any rpms on openvz.org or with this particular rpm in general?

I have a RedHat box that I have configured, security, audit rules, latest updates, etc. I want to be able to "image" that configuration so I can kick other boxes with that "image", that way no other configuration/updating needs to be done on the newly kicked boxes. What is the best way to accomplish this? To make things more difficult, it would be near to impossible for me to pull any software off the internet for this.

I have a database server running RHEL 5.1 32 bit that suffered some catastrophic failures about 6 months ago. We were able to patch it back together and keep it running, but now the manufacturing site it supports is going to shut down for two weeks and I would like to replace it permenantly. Does anyone have any guidance for that sort of thing? I'd like to have the new server up and running before hand, basically changing the hostname/ip and restoring the databases only on conversion day. I've done this in the past with HP UX - Red Hat conversions, but this is my first red hat to red hat move. Any advice or shortcuts?I forgot to add the other wrinkle. The new server will be running 64bit linux.

I am trying to look at installing the PAE module on a RHEL 5 2.6.18-53 system and I cannot seem to find that around. I had hoped to find out if installing the CentOS 5 2.6.18-128 or 2.6.18-164 kernel-PAE modules would have a lot of negative consequences? Perhaps one of you could direct me to a download site that would provide kernel-PAE for a 2.6.18-53 build?

I want to edit text files on Linux server from Windows, using text editor like Notepad++ or UltraEdit.I've managed to do so using WinSCP. It can edit files remotely and offers me to choose local application to open those files. That is exactly what I need, but when I hit ctrl-s (not every time, in about 50% cases), it waits for around 10 seconds, alerts that connection has failed, and offers me to "abort". When I click abort, it instantly reconnect and save file.
