I want to host a public FTP on my server, but i cannot get it so that people can read and write but not delete ANYTHING from it.
I have tried:
chown root /home/ftpdir
chmod 1777 /home/ftpdir
but people can still delete the files in it, i have no idea what to do next. that's the only thing i can find on Google about how to do it.
the users are logging in with the same Account, i cannot make a new account for each one.

However, configured a website on a dedicated server using WHM/cPanel. The site was uploaded using the master account for the website.
The security issue is public users are able to upload files on to my server via the website. They could even access the root and execute whatever they want on the server.
I have consulted with 2-3 Linux experts. According to them, the PHP user has rights to execute anything on the server or upload & store files in whichever folder they want.
Can I protect my folders to avoid file uploads via the website. The application has security vulnerabilites. However, I want to prevent hackers to enter my site until the vulnerabilities are fixed.
How do I change folder permissions without changing the permissions of the files within the folder?

And thought that the knowledge and expertise here would be a good place to seek help.I have CentOS 5.4 server running Samba on a WinBloZ network. I have the groups all setup and that aspect works fine. But here lies the issues.In a shared directory with group permissions set if someone on the group with permission to this directory creates a file they are the only person that can edit / modify that file. That file need to be editable by the entire group. But the only way thus far I can achieve this is to manually chmod the files in the directory. I know there is a way to fix this, but I have not found it. Can someone please explain how to make this work for me.

The file server is working well with the shares all working correctly except for one problem. I would like the users be able to manage the folder permissions from a windows PC. This can be done from a login as the root user if need be but, the key is that the system be manageable from the windows PC.
I have followed the instructions of multiple how to's but still get and error that access is denied when trying to apply permissions. I am able to search the server for users to add and the names resolve. What are the configurations that I should be looking at where the NT permissions in samba are configured. nt acl support is set to yes and any other acl settings used produce the same result.
I'm using ssh2 a PHP extension to create a new folder on my server, however if I try and set the permissions of that
folder above the default of 0755 it creates the folder with that default setting.
It seems like there is some setting preventing me creating a folder with higher permissions e.g 0777.

To easily create/edit the files I'm working on, I mounted a directory from my Mac host via the VirtualBox shared directory feature to /var/www/. FRED
The Samba users are
SUE
JOE - Read only for specified paths (media playback access only user)
SUE can read/write to any directory under the share: Media
So all that is working fine. As long as I do file operations remotely as SUE everything works remotely. How can I make it to where everything SUE does over Samba FRED automatically has permissions to edit when logged in locally (or SSH)? Also, remember, Joe needs to be able to read where specified.
I'm using an older redhat system (2.6.9-22.ELsmp) here which is running an older mysql (server version: 4.1.12). I don't think that's the source of the problems. I believe that have understood things rightly when I say that the mysql root user is unrelated to the linux root user ... in my case I believe the root user to be the unix user mysql. So when I connect to the server (local host from a local terminal) I use:

This gets me on, however I seem unable to do anything like create database or alter privilege. I wonder if its related to my finding no database called mysql?

I am currently trying to replace my Windows Server with a CentOS 5.3 box running nfsd for file serving. I have it all up and running however I cant see anyway of securing user access rights to the shares as all you need to access them is just clone the User ID of a user authorized to access the share of any Linux system which seems a bit insecure to me? I was wondering if there was any advice on securing access to server shares in CentOS.

How can I copy the .* folders from one user home folder to another and then give the correct permissions to the new user.
Is it possible "reset" all (X, GDM related) permissions/settings of one user? What would cause one specific user not to be able to log into anything via gdm/the login screen? After providing the proper password, the screen goes black and then jumps back to the login screen. No session alternative works, not even xterm or gnome failsafe. I can however log in via the console (Ctrl+Alt+F6, recovery etc). With another user I can log in via GDM just fine, and deleting and re-adding the "broken" user doesn't make any difference.

My system is CentOS. I`m starting samba and vsftpd like a root (/etc/init.d/vsftpd start etc.)
I have a Debian Wheezy 7 installation. When I turn it on it boots to the log in screen normally. However when I type in my username/password and try to login the screen briefly turns off for about one second and returns to the log in screen. I cannot log in.
This started happening immediately after I changed the owner and permissions for the "/tmp" folder and all of its contained files/directories. This is the only change I made to the system before the problem began. Immediately after I made the change, I rebooted the system and that's when the problem began.
I changed my permissions in my .ssh folder and now when I use a piece of software that uses my private key, I have to type my password each time. What should my permissions be on my id_rsa file to not have to type a password each time I use an app that uses it?

so running latest ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala. I installed from the terminal PHP and can browse to the localhost and everything looks cool.
I try to use gedit or quanta to save a file to /var/www/
Which is where the test index.php is located but I don't have the correct permissions! I am logged in as the same user I installed ubunutu under which should give me all the rights I need.
I need to give myself permission to write into this folder?
I have a 500GB iomega portable HD. I used Gparted to split the drive into two partitions, a fat32 of roughly 400GB and an EXT4 partition of roughly 100GB.
On my EXT4 partition, there is a folder called lost+found. I can't delete it because I need to be root, yet my account has administrator priviliges (but I CAN rename the folder). I can't create other folders on this partition, nor can I copy-paste and files on there either.
Basically, that partition is unuseable. In the properties of the folder, it says that I am not the owner so I cannot change the permissions. (It is definitely MY hard drive)
All options are greyed out.
How do I give myself permission to use this EXT4 partition?
There are lots of tutorials and opinions on file permissions and web hosting.
So lets say I wanted to allow write permissions to the /var/www folder.
which would be best practice?
Chown -R user... allow a specific user to have write capabailities.
use gksudo nautilus (unsure what this does)
or open the folder to all parties.
If anyone has any opinions on file permissions in general or web hosting security then feel free to throw them at me.
Im new to these forums heres my story:Windows 7 on my acer extensa 5230e became corrupted so i installed linux Ubuntu 10.04 on a 320 gb external hdd. I have installed Mixxx and am trying to create my own skins for it.
