Server :: Two RPMs With Same Name And Version

Apr 20, 2011

I have been seeing this for a while; but decided to decipher it now. That is, most of the times when I look for an installed rpm I get 2 rpms with the same name and version. For example, if I lookf or subversion using

Code:
rpm -q subversion
I get the following:

Code:
subversion-1.6.11-7.el5_6.3
subversion-1.6.11-7.el5_6.3

Why is this? How come there are 2 rpms with the same name and version? This is particularly difficult in situations where I want to get information about an installed package.

Server :: Installing 32 Bit RPMs On 64 Bit - Conflicts With 64 Bit Packages

Aug 18, 2011

I'm using a 64 bit Linux server (OEL 6.1):

I was trying to install Oracle Database on this server that I realized the installer requires some 32 bit libraries. For instance it was looking for libXp.so.6 which existed under /usr/lib64, but not /usr/lib. Even when I changed the installation script to look into lib64 for the library, it failed with an error from Java that it needs 32 bit and instead has found 64 bit.

I downloaded a bunch of 32 bit RPM packages and when I tried to install them, I got the error that a newer version of those packages is installed, which is not the case. Cause all previously installed packages are 64 bit. I was wondering why it thinks that 64 bit packages are newer version of 32 bit packages. And is there a way to solve this?

For example,

Fedora Installation :: F11- Where Are Update (1 RPMs)

Nov 19, 2009

I'd like to confirm if the latest updates of a couple of rpms is causing me a problem. I'd like to downgrade these rpms to an intermediate version (greater than the original F11 versions, but less than the latest version). I've looked on a few mirrors, and all I can find is the latest update. Are intermediate versions of an rpm discarded when they're replaced with new versions? Are these intermediate versions available some place?

The two rpms I'm interested in are:
gstreamer-plugins-good-0.10.16-1.fc11.i586
gstreamer-plugins-base-0.10.25-1.fc11.i586

Fedora :: Downloading Multiple RPMs With Yum

Dec 18, 2009

I am trying to create a local repository of installed RPMs on my workstation. Using the 'rpm -qa' I can gather the installed RPMs on my workstation. Is there a way for me download all these RPMs using the output of 'rpm -qa'? 'yum --downloadonly' will allow me the option of downloading without installing. Since the installed RPMs are not cached in my workstation I have to download these RPMs again. If I have a local repo then it will be easier for me restore my installation without having to rediscover the packages needed. I am looking for how I can download multiple RPMs.

Software :: Update RPMs From One Machine To Another

Apr 14, 2009

I have multiple machines at home (well, 4 in all). They are all running Fedora 10. After installation, there is usually another gig or so of upgrades that need to be applied for patches, security, etc. My broadband link is painfully slow and downloading a gig can take 2-3 hours sometimes (other times I get lucky and it will only take an hour). Is it possible to upgrade the packages from one machine based on the packages on another machine, for example, if I have downloaded all of the base packages on to the fileserver, but not on to the laptop.

Is there any software that I could use by which I could use the fileserver to upgrade the laptop (effectively like a rsync, but with rpms) and only go to the internet for the few that the fileserver does not have, but the laptop still requires? I was once told that "up2date" was an option, but that seems to be quite old and there may be options in rpm or yum, but they are not clear as I would expect to have to set up some kind of service on the fileserver for the laptop to connect to.

Fedora :: Old RPMs Complaining About Missing Dependencies

Jul 10, 2010

I have been running f13 ever since it was released. Evidently the kmod-rt2870 rpms are never deleted when older kernels are removed. When I tried to do today's update the Package Manager and yum complained that some of the older kmod-rt2870 packages left over from fedora 12 were missing kernel dependencies. The kernels have been missing for a long time. I don't know why the package manager started complaining today.

I tried
1) yum clean all
2 rpm --rebuilddb
3) removed the /lib/modules directory corresponding to the old kernels
and the problem persisted.

I finally removed all of the kmod-rt2870 rpms what where originally installed in fedora 12 and I was finally able to complete the update. Why did the package manager suddenly start complaining about the missing kernels?

OpenSUSE :: Installing RPMs Elsewhere - Package Not Relocatable

Jul 19, 2010

I can use KRPMview or midnight commander to see what's in an RPM, fine. I might want to inspect a file inside an RPM or actually install some of its files but this latter might upset already installed files. Or, it is so dependent on something else being previously installed. Therefore I need to install it elsewhere, take a look at he file content and/or copy, it to where I want.

There are options: --badreloc --prefix --relocate --nodeps --ignoreos --force

Some are mutually exclusive but the result is it still tells me - package not relocatable. Is there any other magic incantation or do I need to do some time-consuming backup, run the RPM install and any deps hell, do my intended thing, then another time-consuming restore? Or maybe set up a partition with a suitable suse version and just run the RPM there and then copy over?

General :: Downgrade And Remove Rpms In The Same Command?

Mar 22, 2011

I have a problem where in order to satisfy RPM dependencies, I need to remove packages and downgrade them in the same command. Imagine the following situation Before

A v2.0 depends on B,C
B v2.0 depends on C > 1.0
C v1.1

After

A v1.0 depends on C
C v 1.0

If I issue a

$ rpm -Uvh --oldpackage Av1.0.rpm Cv1.0.rpm

it will fail with "B depends on C > 1.0" If I issue a

$ rpm -e B

it will fail with "A requires B" so I appear to be in a catch-22. The obvious solution is to use a "--nodeps" and remove B before doing the downgrade, but I am creating these commands programmatically so I was hoping to use dependency resolution as a sanity check against an incorrect script. Is there any way to perform this downgrade without breaking the RPM dependency sanity checks by force?

Fedora :: .rpms Showing Up As Updates After Yum Localinstall

Dec 14, 2010

I just installed F14 (so far I like it ). I had F13 but decided to wipe the old OS and install F14 fresh. In the course of replacing all of my old programs, I had to download several .rpms like the .rpms for the RPMFusion repos and the .rpm for Adobe Reader. After downloading the .rpms to a download directory I ran yum localinstall to install them. The installations went well and I didn't have any problems.

However, now the packages are showing up as updates which need to be installed in the software updates window. I also ran yum check-update and they are showing up as updates which need to be installed. I tried deleting the .rpms and also running yum clean all but they are still showing up as updates which need to be installed.
