Server :: Mail Delivery - Email Went Out Fine But Did Not Come Back In

Aug 31, 2010

I am setting up an FC7 box to replace a currently dying server and I'm having an issue with the mail setup. I am using sendmail and dovecot and system users for credentials. I won't include all of their configurations, because that would get long, but I can copy and paste any sections if they are needed.

The problem is all mail is being delivered to the root mailbox in /var/spool/mail/. I setup a laptop on a local network with the server to test things. And just brought up Evolution with one of my test accounts. I was able to authenticate and tried to send a test email to myself. The email went out fine but did not come back in.

Server :: Postfix Mail Delivery Path Modification?

May 24, 2010

I'm running postfix with virtual domains and want to modify the delivery path. Right now, I have one path for each user that's found with a database lookup. Before mail hits Postfix, it will have an x-spam-header: yes/no/uncertain field. When mail with x-spam-header: yes the lookup for the path would return /var/mail/domain/username/.Inbox/.spam.

What I think I'd like to do is parse the x-spam-header value in postfix, populate a variable, then use the variable to modify the path lookup in the database. header_checks has a FILTER option, but that's just beyond my skillset at the moment.Or, maybe I'm better off modifying the path with a procmail recipe? Currently, my mailbox_command = procmail -a "$EXTENSTION"

Software :: Setting Up Mail For Delivery To Server From Client?

Aug 20, 2009

I got a system with RHEL 5.3 Server with dovecot, sendmail, and thunderbird. I have found tons of stuff online about configuring a mail server, but little of it tells me how to get mail from a client to the server. I've tried to work with Postfix, Pine, Sendmail, Thunderbird, and the list goes on. I'm probably so confused now that I'm not even going to convey this properly, but let me try...... I got a system called wks90 which I decided would be my mail server. I installed dovecot, sendmail, and thunderbird. Then did some basic configuration via stuff I found online. Now the test, from the command line I use the simple "mail" command which succeeds. I bring up thunderbird and eureka!!! there is a message in /var/spool/mail/george.

Now here is where I get confused and things fall apart. I go to another system named wks50. I try some similar setup in sendmail trying to point it to wks90 as the server, I assumed dovecot was not needed, made and entry in /etc/aliases, and will use my thunderbird on wks90. So at the wks50 command line I mail -v to george@mydomain.priv. The message seems to work ok, but still goes to wks50's /var/spool/mail. How in the name of sanity do I get the mail to go to /var/spool/mail on wks90? OR somewhere that is centrally located. I tried to mount /var/spool/mail to wks50, but then wks50's mail to root started queueing up and going nowhere.

I guess I got the whole concept of mail wrong somewhere in my thinking. I just want the mail from any client to wind up at one server (wks90) and in a central location on wks90 so that any client like wks50, wks60, and wks70, using thunderbird, can read the mail from that central location. To me this sounds like I need to mount that central location to each client, but how do I then deal with the queuing root mail? Or is sounds like a need something like that old "movemail" command to take it and move it. I have another server that is the HOME server (server1). The physical location of all $HOMEs is here i.e. /home/george.

Server :: Round Robin / Exim4 / Mail Delivery SMTP?

Apr 30, 2011

Here is the senario...

2 round robin dns servers
x.x.x.1 mydomain.com (hostname)
x.x.x.2 mydomain.com (hostname)

My problem is that when I try and send an email that is part of the domain, it ends up trying to deliver it locally. I realize it is supposed to, but I don't want that for non-users of the server.

I want to be able to deliver certain emails []@mydomain.com remotely. (info@mydomain.com)

exim4 setup "internet site; mail is sent and received directly using SMTP". This works well as long as it is not an email from mydomain.com.

Is there a way to have exim check the users first and then deliver based on local user or not?

Next question. Is having the domain name as the hostname the best way to setup a round robin? (web server)

Server :: Postfix - One Account Cannot Send / Receive Email (Other Works Fine)

Dec 7, 2010

I just set up a new email server on Debian Lenny. It's Postfix for MTA and Dovecot for IMAPS server. I use Dovecot for authentication. I have two UNIX users on the system (except root), one was added before the installation of Postfix and Dovecot. I'm not doing any virtual things, just plain UNIX users and one domain on a dynamic IP. The first user, "webadmin" can send and receive emails just fine through the server from my mail client.

Now I just added a new user, "scarleo", and it turns out I'm unable to send and receive emails with this account. If I log in (SSH) with scarleo I can use bash mail to send emails, works fine. scarleo can also receive emails from webadmin and can connect to Dovecot to read emails. However scarleo cannot send or receive to or from anyone outside the server from my mail client. I have restarted both Postfix and Dovecot after adding the user. Do I have to do something else to make this account work like webadmin's?

A few relevant lines from mail.log: (I've modded my real IP)
Code:

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Own Mail Server For Personal Email?

Jan 4, 2011

I would like to be able to have email sent directly to my computer at home (i.e. run some kind of mail server on it) instead of having to rely on Gmail, Yahoo or someone else. From what I've read it should be possible, but most of the guides out there seem to be oriented to enterprise-class setups, or at the very least a small business, and I think that a lot of that would be overkill for just getting my personal mail. The minimum *I think* is

- register a domain name, with the DNS pointing to my public IP (which is dynamic, so one question I have is whether I would have to use DynDNS or is DNS at any registrar going to be flexible enough to modify if/when my IP changes?)- something about MX records (I'm really unsure here, what exactly are these and where do I set them up? I don't think a free DynDNS account lets one handle this, does someone know which of their account types supports setting this up?)

- Install sendmail and postfix (which seems like a PITA, but much documentation appears to be available)

- Profit?

Networking :: Send Email To Mail Server / Account On Local Network?

Mar 4, 2011

I'm trying to configure postfix so smart daemon can send out notifications emails. My system will need to send emails to a mail server that is on the same local network. I have not had much luck in getting this to work, and am confused on what I need to setup to do this and how to set it up. Does my system need to be apart of the same domain as the mail server? If so, how do I do this? Is there any restrictions sending emails from the command line as the root user? Do I need to configure a relayhost?

Basically all I need to do is send emails to a local mail server, i.e. a mail server on the same local network. I do not need to receive emails. I am rather clueless as to how to set this all up, and what I need for this basic email functionality. I have read and tried many postfix configuration tutorials, but when I try to send out a test email to a email address on the local network mail server I always get "Connection refused" to the server and deferred or bounced status on my test email.

Server :: Nagios Email Notification Unable To Work With Nail Mail

Oct 22, 2009

I've gotten myself involved in the Nagios monitoring tools and somewhat managed to configure the Nagios host, but I'm still having some issues with the email notifications.

From what I've read/researched, one of the favourite methods to get the email notification up is by using sendmail/postfix. I've went through it and learned that they are MTAs. What I actually needed is just a basic email client, and I would email the notices directly to an email address over the internet. Thus, I wont be needing something as complex like sendmail/postfix.

I gotten my hands on "Nail mail". I've successfully configured it to be able to send emails from my linux machine over the internet. However, when I copied the same command lines to nagios's contact.cfg, it did not work.

This is the command line that I'm using. Let me explain what I'm trying to achieve below. Firstly, I would save all the text notifications into a text file(green), and then email it out. The problem is NailMail command (red) does not work on Nagios, but the command line works in the terminal command on my Nagios account. Has anyone attempted using Nail mail with Nagios?
