Networking :: Connecting To Cisco Devices Via Serial
Mar 31, 2010I did a forum search and too much came up that was not the answer I was looking for. I have only Linux devices at work and I was wondering how do Linux Administrators connect to Cisco devices via serial console cable. Cisco recommends 'Hyper Terminal' which was a Windows add-on applications licensed to XP. I think Vista and 7 no longer have the license to use Hyper Terminal. Regardless I don't have any versions of Windows and would like to use a serial cable from Com port 1 to the console port on the device. I can't use SSH since some devices don't support SSH and or I have to do a password recovery.

Aug 13, 2010Asterisk and its cousin technologies intrigue as well as confuse me. I'm wondering: Is it possible to set up an Asterisk (or other) server on a home computer with no special hardware and use it to route calls between mobile devices in remote locations? I'm hoping this could work similarly to Skype Mobile, Google Voice, etc., except on a WAY smaller scale. This is just something I'd use personally for calls to family and friends--nothing huge.
Since my computer is just a regular laptop with no 3G connectivity, I don't expect to use 3G for calls. I just think it would be cool, for instance, to go to a caf� with WiFi and use a SIP/VoIP client on my Android phone to call up a friend who also has a phone or PC with a SIP/VoIP client on it. I realize I could do the same thing far more easily with an account at Skype or some other provider. My interest in attempting this project is more for the learning experience than practical use.
If indeed this is possible to do with the hardware I already own, any tips for starting out? My computer is a MacBook Pro 5,5 (dual-booting Sabayon Linux and Mac OS X). I know I could install Asterisk from within Sabayon, install a specialized telephony distro to a new partition, or run a virtual Asterisk machine--but I'm not sure which option, if any, would be most appropriate here. I'm also not sure if Asterisk would accomplish what I want, or if I should look at other software.

Dec 2, 2010I'm no expert on DHCP. My problem is that i have a CentOS 5.5 server on which i want to install a DHCP server. I have two NICs where eth0 has access to the internet and where eth1 should act as an DHCP server.
I have installed dhcpd and this is how my dhcpd.conf file looks like.

When i start dhcpd on eth1 i get no error messages but when i connect any devices to eth1 they don't get any IP. I cant find anything in any logs about devices trying to get an IP address. I dont have any firewall rules in iptables.

Mar 1, 2010I'm using Postgresql 8.4.2-2. I'm trying to remote into my server securely. I figure I could do so with ssh. Apparently I figured correctly, as per, [URL] and [URL] I setup the ssh tunnel. ssh -L 5432:serverip:5432 Then I setup pgadmin3 to connect as follows:

port: 5432
user: postgres
maintenance db: postgres
And I receive the following error:
An error has occurred: Quote: An error has occurred: Error connecting to the server: server closed the connection unexpectedly This probably means the server terminated abnormally before or while processing the request.
I'm not sure what the problem is. I can connect with Code: psql from the cli after connecting to the terminal via ssh. So I know that I'm using the correct password.

May 13, 2010I'm performing some experiments on a box with 5x36,4G disks. Right now I have partitioned all the drives in chunks of 1G, and put them together 3 by 3 in raid5. (Yeah, there's a lot of md-devices..). 'mdadm --query' and 'mdadm --detail' give summary/detailed information about the md's, on condition that I specify the device.
My question is if there would be a way to have a summary overview of all the md-devices at once. I've gone through the manual, but haven't found anything which resembles a useful command.

May 12, 2010Need help on how the scsi and multipathing works in Linux. From the docs i have read, i understand that by the use of multipathing we can assign multiple paths to a SAN partition. If there is a problem then one path will failover to other path.However, i am not clear on how linux recognizes the SAN partitions using the multipath drivers. For e.g. I have a HP Proliant server on which we have the following mounts:

Server :: RAID 1 Partition Devices Disappear After Upgrade
Mar 3, 2011I found a workaround of sorts. It looks like this is related to a 9.04 bug [URL] and the loopback workaround brings back the array. It is not clear how I will handle this long term.
Note: before using this technique, I used gparted to tag the partitions as "raid". They disappeared again on reboot, so I had to do it again. I am not sure how this is going to work out long-term
Note: I suspect some of this is related to the embedded "HOMEHOST" that is written into the RAID metadata on the paritions. The server was misnamed when first built and the name was changed later (cerebus -> cerberus) and the old name has surfaced in the name of a phanton device reported by gparted - /dev/mapper/jmicron_cerebus_root
I have a mythbuntu 9.10 system that I have upgraded from 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10 in the last 2 days. I am on my way to 10.x, but need to make sure it works after every step.
The basic problem is that in its current incarnation, it is not recognizing the underlying partitions for one of the RAID devices, and therefore not happy.
As a 8.10 system I had 2 raid devices:
/dev/md16 -> /dev/sda5 and /dev/sdb5
/dev/md21 -> /dev/sdc1 and /dev/sdd1
/etc/fstab looked like this (in part):
/dev/md16 /var/lib xfs defaults 0 2

I don't *really* want to repartition the drive as there is a small amount of data loss between recent backups and what is on the drive, plus it would take me 2 days to move the data back.
Slackware :: Virtual 'web' Server For Internet Capable Devices
Aug 10, 2010i work in consumer electronics, and due to company constraints on network usage, i came up with a "jail box" to test blu-ray players, TV's etc that can connect to the internet. the majority of the complaints the server addresses are mailnly "blu-ray player can't connect to the internet", etc... right now it's set up only to return pings that the devices do to test connectivity (i.e. entries in the etc/hosts file for www.samsung.com, www.lge.com, etc.).
i want to have the box actually provide DNS, samba shares, possibly a "pseudo-you-tube" link to test other functions, but the first one i want to tackle is to have the box providing actual DNS services (even though all DNS queries will after all point to the same ip address) the samba shares i know isn't a big headache, i already have it providing virtual web pages (but with no content as yet), the "virtual you-tube" page i'll tackle later. so how would i go about setting up BIND to do this? keep in mind this is a standalone box, not connected to anything but the device under test.
Ubuntu Networking :: Server Doesn't Find My Other Network Devices

1. Built-in ethernet LAN
2. Built-in ethernet WLAN
3. PCMCIA ethernet LAN
I installed Ubuntu Server on this computer without the last one inserted.I inserted the last one today, and it lights up when i put in the cable. To be sure if Ubuntu has found it, I tested with the install CD and could see that it found all three at the first part of the installation where I have to chose a primary device.I can't get my WLAN card working, neither do I get my PCMCIA LAN card working. The third card, this PCMCIA card, has worked on Ubuntu Desktop using another laptop. And as said, the setup finds all three.

I need to create about 30-40 LVM's worth 500GB as raw devices for sybase . is there a way to script it or anyone already has it ?
The problem is that each time we need to do fdisk /dev/cciss/c0d1 and enter the partition no to create a new one .. how to overcome that problem and automate it in a script ?

Sep 22, 2010I have 3 accounts setup on this machine. One is root, one is my own, and one is for my kids. My account and root work fine, but today when I tried to log my kids on, startx fails (it also fails from runlevel4). I have tried creating new accounts and they fail as well. I'm not sure when the issue started, but it's been less than a week I believe. The consistent error which I receive is

Jul 3, 2011I am having problems connecting to my VNC server. The host machine is running fedora core 15.
In the past I have been able to connect to the machine, but for some I no longer can't.
I have done the following but still am unsure what problem is
1. Verfied the VNC server is running
2. Verified my user "trb" is in the vnc users list
3. I have checked that my port is open (at least i think). i launched a terminal and did "telnet 127.0.0.1 5902" and successfully connected.

Jan 4, 2010I wanted to set up a secure FTP server with proftpd so I can put some large files on the web for my pops. Here is my problem, I use a clearwire modem that won't allow you to change any of the settings but appears to have some pre-set firewalling capabilities. I also have a linksys wireless router connected to the modem. That firewall has all the port forwarding settings ready to go, and there hasn't been an issue with anything else, so here it goes.
I have a properly configured secure FTP setup with proftpd and the client app I'm using is Filezilla. I know it is configured right because I was able to use the FTP server via my LAN. Maybe my logic is wrong but, I was connecting to the FTP server at it's IP on the LAN of 192.168.1.5:21. If I wanted my pops to connect from out of state I would give him the ip the internet sees when I surf the web, right? Looks something like this 68.44.22.113. I should tell him to configure Filezilla to connect to 68.44.22.113:21. If my logic is wrong, please let me know, because when I try to do this I get an error that says connection refused by host.

Server :: Fdisk Does Not Like Md Devices On Machine Since Configured A Raid And Made Changes To Main Workstation
Mar 24, 2011It's been a while since I configured a raid and have been making some changes to my main workstation/server.
fdisk does not like md devices on my machine... always says it has an invalid partition table. While this is said to be normal all over the net, I don't feel warm and fuzzy about that fact. What is best practice these days, to create a non-partitionable md device or a partitionable mdp device?
If I create a partitionable md device, I would imagine it would look good in fdisk. However, I am concerned about growing the array afterward. I would then have to grow the array, redefine the partition, and then grow the file system. The PITA factor goes up. Has anyone worked with both? Pro/Cons? My array was created with:
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=5 --force --raid-devices=3 /dev/sda1 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
FYI: I have backups. I understand RAID 1 may be a better choice of raid level.
Ubuntu :: VoIP Client That Uses IAX?
Apr 30, 2010I'm currently working for a company that requires me to have an IAX-compatible VoIP client. So far, the only one that works, and the one that was suggested to me, is Zoiper.

I can download Zoiper classic (which runs literally as an executable) or Zoiper communicator which has a .deb, but both of them are unreliable for everyday use.
I can run Zoiper in Windows XP no problem, but I'm a programmer and I work much faster with my native workflow in Ubuntu.
I tried installing IAX libraries in Synaptic and tried to see if Empathy, Pidgin or Ekiga would pick it up, but no luck.
