General :: VLC Offers To Multiply The Volume By 2 (200%), But It Isn't Enough?

Sep 20, 2010

I'm watching some movies on my laptop, but the sound is very low. The video was probably just recorded at a too low sound level. VLC offers to multiply the volume by 2 (200%), but it isn't enough. I'm not looking for quality, if improving the sound makes the quality less good. Can I do better than that, either with a video software or admin task (I'm using ubuntu) ?

Ubuntu Networking :: No Driver Claimed In Ndiswrapper - Atheros AR5001X+ Wireless Network Adapter?

Feb 26, 2010

I recently switched from Windows XP to a clean install Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10 but it seems to be quite a problem to get the wifi up and running. In Windows the nearby network all appeared in network connections but the same section in Ubuntu is empty. So I decided to go with the ndiswrapper guide to solve the problem with an unclaimed driver. After an entire day messing with my computer I'm still not close... Below follows excerpts taken from the Ndiswrapper guide with posted results from my computer. "ndiswrapper won't work until it thinks that your Windows drivers have been properly installed and that they are the appropriate ones for your wireless card. You can run the command: ndiswrapper -l"

WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist, it will be ignored in a future release.
WARNING: All config files need .conf: /etc/modprobe.d/ndiswrapper, it will be ignored in a future release.
net5211 : driver installed
device (168C:0013) present (alternate driver: ath5k)

So I've posted the result the name of my wireless card below: lspci -nn

00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN333/CN400/PM880 Host Bridge [1106:0259]
00:00.1 Host bridge [0600]: VIA Technologies, Inc. CN333/CN400/PM880 Host Bridge [1106:1259]

It seems like the network is disabled or unclaimed or both. What to do? I'm stuck after spending an entire day trying to install the wifi. I had no problems in Windows XP but it seems to be quite impossible in Ubuntu.

Server :: FreeRadius - PQexec Blocks Forever Due To Connection Timeout

Jan 5, 2010

I've configured the RADIUS to use a PostgreSQL DB for accounting. Everything works fine if the connection from the RAD to the SQL is OK. If the PostgreSQL service dead, the RAD will skip the failed connection and continue to work. That's OK, too. But if I shutdown the network interface of the SQL (simulating a connection lost - timeout problem), the RAD thread which processes accounting request will be hung up, remains as active and unresponsive forever. So the RAD will not return anything to accounting client (my NAS).

As more accounting requests come, spare threads for processing the requests will reduce and be used up eventually. I've debugged for a while and found it's the problem of PQexec() function. The function blocks the thread eternally till if the connection lost. I know the RAD version is a little outdated, but I cannot replace it right now. I wonder if there's a way to make the RAD reply to the NAS even when the connection between the RAD and the SQL lost.

Server :: On Boot The Fsck Of 2TB File-system Fails?

Apr 5, 2010

I have a 2TB file-system and when the machine reboots it fails the fsck, halts and goes into maintenance mode.Stats: I have have RHEL 5, 2.6.18 kernel, the file-system is an ext3. The file-system is on an EMC AX4 connected with fiber channel HBA.So far my reading tells me this should work because under 2.6 4TB is OK. Any ideas why this fails? If I take it out of the fstab file and mount it manually the boot is OK and the file-system behaves well. I can change the fsck check option in the fstab to 0 but I don't think I should have too. Everything I read says that 2TB ext3 file-systems are OK.

Ubuntu :: Blocks Appear Instead Of Letters

Jan 31, 2011

When I started the PC like always, it started normal been having issues actually, every time I start up the PC it freezes when I put the password in and its going to the desktop and stuff, then I have to re-start it or it re-starts itself, or just go to where I have to type in the password again, and then it does it again after a while, after 3 or 4 times of that it goes to the desktop normally and works fine, but today it took some time, and after it finally loaded the panel was all odd, everything appeared in block letters, like when Mozilla can't recognize certain language it just shows you blocks, that appears, but I check the system, where images and all that, everything appears normal, it only seems to be the panel.
wondering if its that I need to re-install the panel, or something else, also this odd file appeared too, it says (invalid coding) next to it, when I go to upload an image or something the files there, I wonder if that has something to do, or maybe its just been there who knows (and the freezing part too), anyways, I'm new here so I don't really know if this place was the right place to post this up OTL theres a screenshot in an attachemnt thing (if I put it up, it would appear to big)

And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.
