Hardware :: Should Use Disk With Report Of Bad Blocks
Feb 4, 2010
I'm setting up a mysql replication system. I usually maximize what's left on my stock before I buy. I do badblocks first to all 2nd hand hard drive to make sure it is in good condition before I install an Operating System.
I pick up a 200GB sata hard disk in the stock room and test it using badblocks. I left it in the office doing the test and just check it tomorrow. When I return to check, the report says it found 30 bad blocks.

I want to find out how many 4096 byte blocks there are on my disk. I used df -B 4096 and it gave me a number but I'm not sure it's correct as I can use dd to read past what should be the final block.
So I do df -B 4096 and it reports this result:
Code:
Filesystem 4K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 15618840 13190294 1635137 89% /
But when I use dd to go past that block, it doesn't report an error or anything. The command I'm using is
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=4096 count=1 skip=15618841
How can I know that I'm really reading the very last block on the drive?

My old system disk almost failed me. I dd_rescued the disk onto a new one (_don't_ use dd_rhelp, that one took days and seemed to forget what it had scanned more than once). The condition of the disk was not very good. So naturally I expected the subsequent fsck.ext3 to bomb half of the new disk. But obviously only a few inodes were affected and I lost only about 10 files completely (mostly on the root partition and not the home partition - yeay!).
However, I then ran a badblocks and put all the bad blocks into a file. I could use this to run fsck but I fear that
1. It could undo or even redo worse than what the first fsck run did, and
2. giving the list of bad blocks, fsck might on the one hand rescue/flag damaged files (which is what I want), but I don't want it to flag the bad blocks on the new disk as well (they are not bad blocks anymore, just copies of bad blocks).
So, how can I single out problematic files using my list of bad blocks (which I can then look at one by one if they could be rescued) without flagging the supposedly bad blocks on the new disk.

Let's say I'm using one of those PCs that uses a SSD flash drive in place of a more regular HDD.
Say I burn my favorite .iso distro and install it on this PC. I install my favorite applications and seek out and install any missing drivers and generally tweak the system like you do. When I am finally happy with it, I make an image of this installation to an external USB drive.
Now, say 9 months later some of those SSD blocks have gone bad because they were erased too often. They're no longer usable. Also, because I'm a sloppy person who can't be bothered to delete redundant stuff and run make-cleans and so forth, the disk is getting pretty cluttered and takes longer and longer to do stuff.
I decide the obvious solution is to remove and save any data I need to keep, then just over-write the disk with the image I made 9 months earlier.
The question is: will the firmware be smart enough to re-map my incoming image to avoid these bad blocks on the SSD? Or am I going to wind up with some parts of the image being located on bad areas of the SSD?

This has happened several times now, with 9.10 and 10.04. I back up my photos periodically to external drives, using Nautilus. At the next attempted login Gnome won't start and sometimes gives power manager incorrect installation error.
First time this happened I was stumped and eventually did a clean install. Second time, I found advice elsewhere in this forum to solve this by emptying root trash, which did the trick. This time, however, root trash has nothing in it and 2 users trash were insignificant (I emptied them all anyway with rm -r). Tried looking for enormous directories but couldn't find a smoking gun. I would rather not end up doing another clean install - a painful and extreme solution. I'm continuing to look for solutions to the immediate problem, but my question really is, what causes this and how do I prevent it in the future? I've run Computer Janitor regularly and ran apt-get clean but no help. Should I do all my large scale copying from terminal? I'm not a total noob, but close.

I need to write a script to report useful information on disk utilization for each user's home directory. For each directory I need to show: 1. the long listing of that directory entry (but not the files in the directory), so that I can see the rights and owners of the directory.2. The amount of disk used by that directory, in human-readable format, including subdirectories. I need to have two lines for each user one after the other. For example:
/home/user1 directory info
/home/user1 disk usage
/home/user2 directory info
/home/user2 disk usage
The script will assume that all users, except user root, have their home directories in the /home directory (no need to do anything with the /etc/passwd file). And if the administrator adds or removes users, the script should still work correctly (so the script shows the information for all current users).
Here's what I do know. The command "ls -ld /home/user's_name" will give me the info I need for #1. And the command "du -hs" will give me the info I need for #2. What I don't know is how to grab each individual directory in order to apply the above commands to each of them in order. ???

When I started the PC like always, it started normal been having issues actually, every time I start up the PC it freezes when I put the password in and its going to the desktop and stuff, then I have to re-start it or it re-starts itself, or just go to where I have to type in the password again, and then it does it again after a while, after 3 or 4 times of that it goes to the desktop normally and works fine, but today it took some time, and after it finally loaded the panel was all odd, everything appeared in block letters, like when Mozilla can't recognize certain language it just shows you blocks, that appears, but I check the system, where images and all that, everything appears normal, it only seems to be the panel.
wondering if its that I need to re-install the panel, or something else, also this odd file appeared too, it says (invalid coding) next to it, when I go to upload an image or something the files there, I wonder if that has something to do, or maybe its just been there who knows (and the freezing part too), anyways, I'm new here so I don't really know if this place was the right place to post this up OTL theres a screenshot in an attachemnt thing (if I put it up, it would appear to big)

I am having some text rendering issues.I am using F14 and having blocky (dark black blob) covering certain letters and/or numbers when rendering to my Monitor. I am using 'mesa' drivers and was wondering if this has anything to do with it.I wish to use only non-proprietary drivers.I have several friends whose machine I manage and they have been experiencing a similar phenomena.I use 19 and 22 inch LCD monitors and my friends have similar LCD monitors.I have attached a copy of some output with the problem. I have tried different fonts but have not been able to resolve the issue. Could someone help me in getting a possible solution to this problem?

I have wireless connection between my router and PC. It is the only computer connected. Sometimes Firestarter blocks ports 1900 and 6771 from 192.168.1.100 IP address and sometimes port 68 from 192.168.1.1 IP. I'm a bit confused because 192.168.1.100 is the IP addres i use to open ports in router and 192.168.1.1 is used to access the router settings..

I've got a new hard drive, formatted it to ext3, and made a check for bad blocks using e2fsck.
It gave me this:
Quote:
I just would like to know where i can find how many bad blocks were found (perhaps one if it is using singular in sentence "Updating bad block inode."?), and what is/are the number(s) of located bad block(s).

Is there a way of reporting a bug in reportbug? I was trying to report a bug in another package and everytime I tried to run reportbug, the terminal window would display "Segmentation fault" or if I ran it with the --configure option, a GUI opens up, select Continue, then the screen says "This may take a while...". Well, 20 minutes later, the screen still says "This may take a while" and reportbug is still doing nothing..

I've been having problems with pdf files made using latex (dvi->ps->pdf). I found a reported bug in bugzilla by searching the error message and made a comment. The 'problem' is that the bug is filed under evince, but I'm pretty sure it is in ghostscript. Should I file another bug in the ghostscript section, or will the clever people at bugzilla work it out once they get round to this particular bug (it's marked as low priority)?
The bug report can be found here[URL]..The bug is more annoying than anything else, so any advice is welcome.

it's not a real bug/error in Ubuntu per se, but i found an error in the spanish language pack of Ubuntu. There were some words that weren't translated right.I was wondering how to report/change that.I actually found it in the Ubuntu 9.10 spanish language pack, so i don't know if it's been fixed for lucid, but i thought it would be good to know either way just in case i find some other translation errors.

I just installed 11.04 alpha 3 and I found a bug in the installer. Even though I told it to install the boot loader on /dev/sda7, it installed it on /dev/sda and messed up my other settings. I would like to report a bug, however, when I go to Launchpad and select "report Ubuntu bug" I get sent to this page:[URL]I can see how to report a bug for a currently running process (which would be hard if the process has just crashed), I can see how to request new software/features, but there is nothing for the installer.

I have installed Cacti 0.87e in fedora 11. And it is working fine. But as per our organizational requirement, they want report as pdf format. I have installed nmidcreate pdf also for the same. It generates the report in pdf format but the content of the pdf is blank i.e. it does not contain any graph or value in the report. It shows only header and footer information, nothing more than that. Kindly resolve this issue, either using the above mentioned plugin or other else. Because this is an urgent requirement. I am waiting for your affirmative response.

I am using my netbook with Squeeze when I travel. I recently started getting a msg "Network discovery service has been disabled" or something to that effect. And many websites have been blocked as well. I discovered that I could remove avahi-daemon to fix it and I have done so. Unfortunately, the websites are still blocked even though I no longer get the msg. I could not even post this msg here with Linux and had to boot with Windows to do it. It is a shame. Can someone please tell me how to unblock those websites.

Since the last Versions of openSUSE 11.3 and now with openSUSE 11.4 with KR46, I've a blocking system sometimes with all memory used (especially swap). KDE Hangs only the mouse works. The Harddisk is 100% used (HDD LED is always on). This blocking is about 5 minutes and 30 minutes. In this time only very minimum work is going on. If I switch with <ctrl>+<shift>+<F2> to the tty, a lock in needs 3 times (the password request is after the time out). top shows only 5% load with "gam_server" (first or secound entry -> most system load).
