I was given an assignment to do, and I am so far lost it isn't even funny. I need to create a directory structure, set up file security, create a step by step instruction manual on how to copy/delete said files, and create a guide to common Linux commands. How would I create these files in root and share them with the other users? and where can I find a list of common commands and their functions?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am in the process of writing an rsync script to run unattended backups of my entire file system to another system located on my local network using ssh and password-less rsa keys.
I will absolutely will not use password-less keys with the root account and this is the limitation preventing me from accomplishing my goal because root is required by rsync to access the / tree and copy it to another location. I decided that if I compiled the script into a binary that I didn't have a problem with the password being contained within the binary itself but from what I've read there is no way to elevate to root and then back down to user level from within the script/binary.
I can create the script as the user and use chroot to make it owned by root but retain execution permission for the user but it will still cause the ssh login to be under root and therefore require either that I am there to enter my password or the use of password-less keys under the root account which I reiterate I will NOT do. Currently the script is executed by the user on the machine containing the files to be backed up.
I have suspicious requests in my haproxy logs from multiple sources to the same target. I could deny them in /etc/hosts.deny, but there are too many to keep track of. Is there a way to deny all requests to a specific target either in haproxy or through iptables?

I've commented out my amazon instance id for security purposes. The request is for comment_icon.gif which does not exist. All requests go to that. The source IPs are from different countries as well. Blocking a certain country won't work either. Basically, if there was a way to send all requests for comment_icon.gif to /dev/null or something it would work.
I want to run ISCSI target on CentOS. Both "scsi-target-utils" and "iscsi-target" can be used.
They seem to have the same function.
Is there any significant difference between them, on performance or stability?
I'm setting up a new linux box to give email and web services to some small companies I manage.I'd like to secure things up a bit, as I don't want that user in Company A be able to access Company B data.For starters I'm planning to create a new place for placing users, groups, files and some other Company related stuff.I want to be able, when I add a user for some company, that the user home dir will be set to /customers/ companyX/users/userX
Question 1: is this folder structure ok, or is there a better,safer place to put it other than / ?
Question 2: how can I set a new user home dir to the path above, when I add it? Similarly, how can I set the email location?
I'm looking for a way to distribute files to customers and vice versa via web. What I'd like to find is a program that allows a user to upload a file to a web server and then email a link to the file to the recipient. It would have to be secure of course.

i installed CentOS 5.4 with squid and dansguardian as internal use in a firm. There is a domain server and primary dns windows, but by "wpad" file every internal computer is automaticly forwarding on CentOS proxy.Dansguardian port 8080Squid port 3128Now i have a problem, how to inform my customers who use your laptop in our lan that they have to configure the proxy.

I've tricked it once by creating a new printer System/Admin/printers, setting the "new" printer to default then deleting the old printer. Not working that way this time. I've search the old forums, a lot of activity in 2007-2008 but nothing since.

So i installed team-viewer software in one comp (from which i connect others in lan)and controlling it from outside. View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been using Ubuntu for about a month now, gotta say I'm loving it. I've been spending more time in Ubuntu than W7 now. I've been trying to get Steam to work with Ubuntu without the whole thing exploding on me. I've got WINE and winetricks already pretty much set up, and Steam works flawlessly. The problem appears when I try to launch Team Fortress 2. The monitor instantly goes to sleep, but if I wait a few seconds, I can hear the in-game music, which means that the game is loading correctly.
I'm using the 10.04 LTS release, Wine 1.1.42. Kernel version 2.6.32-22-generic. My graphics card is a Radeon HD 4850, running Catalyst 10.5.
i am having trouble connecting on teamviewer to my home computer. i can do file transfer but remote access is not working. is there a way i can transfer a file that can restart my home computer or any way i can restart my home computer through the internet?
View 1 Replies View Relatedi recently installed wine, steam, and team fortress 2 so that i could play it. They all installed just fine except for not getting fonts but i did that manually. The problem is when i run tf2 the screen seems to scramble at the menu but after a while it goes away. Performance is terrible in game though and crashes have happened. im running ubuntu 11.04 and the beta of wine installed via software center. Everything else runs great if not better on ubuntu and i would really like to continue to use it over win7.

At the moment it is still marked as experimental, and there is a good chance it will destroy your data.
i have a problem with both spotify and teamviewer. Both of them work just fine but when i close the main window they keep going in background (as they should) but, not showing any tray icon, if i want to close them i have to manually kill them in a terminal. For teamviewer there's an option to choose to completely close the program by closing the windows but i would like to have the possibility of having the app working in background with a tray icon!!!
Spotify gave me the same problem but i read on spotify community that is a bug of the current version. Still i'd like to solve the problem with teamviewer.I had a similar problem with skype and i solved getting a plugin from https://extensions.gnome.org/ but for teamviewer i don't see anything similar...

What I am trying to do is edit the link target to force ip=xxxx.xxx.xxx string at end. I have a software program which access 4 different servers running the software but with different configs. In xp I can copy links and modify as above to correctly force the program to the various servers.
I have read the various how tos on hard vs sym links which I get. Playing around with hardlinks and sysmlinks (the examples I find) does not seem to be what I need. Feel like this is pretty basic stuff but I am a bit stumped.

View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter some testing for a couple of days, I decided to take the plunge and update all my 5.3 machines. Using the recipe from the release notes:

I updated some guinea pigs that I had physical access to and didn't have any issues. So I remotely updated a small farm of LAMP machines that handle a couple of million page views per day. It took each machine approximately 5-6 minutes to download/install/reboot.
I recently installed windows 7 next to my ubuntu installation, I had to mess with partitions a bit to get it all to work, now I finally made it work, I can boot nicely from booth of them, but gparted doesn't show my partitions anymore (just says unallocated space), and when I try TestDisk to rewrite my partition table it says structure bad when I configure it as I like it.
Why is this not possible? Why is this structure bad, everything works ok atm, except that I can't change partitions or create new partitions because they're not recognized.
My question is about the raw MX reply package structure. I've read the RFC and all relevant pages I could find, but I couldn't figure this one out. Say we do a google.com MX query.
The first answer (just the rdata part) will be: google.com.s9b2.psmtb.com But in the raw package, instead of the .com, you have c0 13. Then for the second answer, google.com.s9b1.psmtb.com, the raw package has, instead of psmtb.com, just c0 3a. So is the part after c0 a pointer towards another part of the message? Or what does it stand for exactly? I am puzzled by it, and don't know exactly where to ask... some of the networking people here might have a good idea.

If I want only to checkout the src directory to work on, it's important to create a special file structure in git? For example, instead of doing git init on app general directory, should I do git init on all subdirectories?
