Red Hat :: Putting Internal Virtualization Plan In Place?
Dec 1, 2010
I am new to virtualization and I am working on putting an Internal Virtualization plan in place. Under what circumstances is VMWare Virtualization and/or RHEV and/or Xen and/or Microsoft Hyper V is better over the rest. Also, is it reasonable to assume, all that needed to be virtualized on VMware has already occurred.

I have been struggling to get Linux on my main business computer. These two programs really trip me up as I can not really find alternatives to them[URL].. are the programs, I have found an online business plan program called planhq.com that can kind of replace Business plan pro, but I still need better financials. Neither program works under WINE at all.

I'm planning on building a home file server with a few 2 TB drives and I wanted to use software RAID 5 under Linux (most likely ubuntu).
Before I start, I wanted to know how easy is it to expand a RAID 5 in case I wanted to add 1 or 2 more drives in the future. Do I have to start from scratch and migrate all my data off before hand or will it just restripe the data.

I guess blueprint will work, but I want to get a basic layout of my house with where the wires and plumbing in the walls are so that I do not need to find everything when I want to make a change.
Is there any software that could do this? Something like a construction planner or such?

How do I get the contents of .plan and .project files to show up using the finger command for regular users? As it stands with the setup I have in Fedora 12, only the user in question and the superuser can see them when they finger the user. Everyone else gets "no plan". I've tried chmod .plan o+rwx and chmod .plan a+rwx to no effect.ur.

I plan to install SlackBuild: virtualbox-ose (3.2.10) on my stand alone laptop. The following are excerpts from the SlackBuild Readme file and I was hoping that someone might have the time to clarify a few things:
"By default VirtualBox will be compiled with hardening enabled. That means all binaries will be run suid root, which is the default behaviour of upstream packages. However, you are still able to disable this by passing HARDENING=no to the script."Why would I want to do this? If I did want to do this, how do I pass 'HARDENING=no' to the script? What script?
Edit: I found something on this and see that I'll just include my user in the proper group and I should be ok.'To compile virtualbox without the Qt4 GUI pass QT4=no to the script'I have a package called: qt-4.6.2_2d3d3e5-i486-1 installed - does this mean that I have Qt4 installed?'To enable the webservice pass WEBSERVICE=yes to the script. This adds gsoap to the list of required dependencies.'Why would I want to do this? If I did want to do this, how do I pass 'WEBSERVICE=yes' to the script? Also, to do this I would have to install gsoap first, right?'If you want to attach VirtualBox to a VDE network you will need vde2.I don't need this for my stand alone world, right? This requires acpica, and the virtualbox-kernel package is needed at runtime.'Does this mean that VDE network requires acpica or that this SlackBuild require acpica?

My laptop has only Debian on it. Except for /boot, the entire hard drive is a giant encrypted LVM partition. It takes Clonezilla 13 hours to back up to a USB hard drive without verification, long enough to make sure backups aren't done much. Is there some way to make an encrypted bare-metal backup of only what is used (except swap) instead of every sector? Backing up across the LAN would be ok.

A bit clumsy subject, but I would like to make a script, which is able to send and receive email messages from CLI. The script should work like this:
1. read user input from stdin(for example a mail address)
2. send mail over SMTP(SSL, port 465) to a mail server
3. mail server sends an automatic response, script should just display this response email sent from mail server over IMAP(port 993)
At the moment I have a fallowing configuration in my Thunderbird:
Code:
IMAP mail.domain.com SSL 993
SMTP mail.domain.com SSL 465
Is it possible with 'mail' utility? Do I need to configure some sort of MTA at first(I use SUSE and I have Sendmail installed by default)? What are the steps, to get this script working?

I messed up my kvm virtualization, I think. I want to reload it. I think I'm supposed to type yum install aptName. Is that right? Also, I don't know what to put in for aptName. I can't find the package names on the Fedora site. Where did they hide it? Also, where do I download apts. I searched with Google and find all kinds of sites I don't trust.

I would like to know or to retrieve a guide with all the steps to follow to do a hardware virtualization in a 1.5 TB-HDD in which i want to have 2 VM with VT-d (Hardware virtualization) one VM with Opensuse 11.4 x64 and the other with Windows 7 x64. The fact is that I want to run both VM's at same time and I need aid and tips with Xen 4.1 because all the Tutorials and guides that I've seen are from non updated versions (3.0, 2.2...). Do I need 3 partitions to virtualize by hardware (one for the host and the other 2 for the VM's)?? Which host OS do you recommend me?
Is it hard to configure Xen and anyway, how to do it? Basically I'm a novice use of linux and my doubts come up refering to Xen configuration, installation and Hardware virtualization selection ( Graphic Card Virtualization above all) because if I have to touch the BIOS settings tell me how, or the application sets it by itself? What I want to virtualize is a 7 Professional 64bits with most of the Disk space (at least 1 TB)for gaming&multimedia, and Opensuse 11.4 64bits. I'll use suse to work & test software.
Motherboard Gigabyte GA-H67A-UD3H
Processor: Intel Socket 1155 - Intel Core I5 2400 3.1Ghz
OpenSuse 11.4 (default DVD kernel version)
RAM memory Kingston ValueRAM 8 GB DDR3 1333 in modules of 2.
Hard drive 3.5 SATA - Samsung HD154UI 1.5TB SATA2 32MB MAESTRO.
I'm not searching for software virtualization/ full virtualization / paravirtualization. I'm searching for vt-x, vt-d & Graphic card optimizing with windows emulated environment. And do you recommend me to use another Xen version or software to achieve this goal?

I need to dual-boot for exactly 4 days. I have set up my Lucid, and loving it, and I am just afraid that I will not be able to recover the bootloader - I have messed this up many times before.
What are the things I need to know, in order to get it back? If there are any problems (error 17 or 15, by memory), what kind of things can I double-check now, in order to be able to fix anything?

I was wondering if anyone can assist me. I am looking to build a server with Debian as the host. When I installed Debian (Squeeze) the default kernel was "2.6.32-3-trunk-amd64". When I tried to install 'Virtualbox' application, I got a failure because I didn't have the 'kernel-headers' installed on my machine. I noticed there are no specific header package the 'trunk' kernel I was using. I have a few questions so I guess I should begin:
Is it safe to remove the 'trunk' kernel and boot my system on just the regular 2.6.32-3-amd64 kernel? Is this OK or not recommended? Please explain whatever is the correct answer. This is my 1st time using a 'Trunk' kernel so I don't know the in's and out's of it.
If I am using Debian 'Testing' for virtualization via 'Vbox', is there a specific kernel I "should" be using?

I am running Fedora on a VirtualBox. Sometimes to allow for performing some real hardware testing, I need to run my development environment on a physical machine. So I need the hard disk of the virtual machine (the .vdi file) to be interchangeably working on both the virtual machine itself and my physical PC by booting a bootable image, mounting the vdi file, and then chrooting to it.

I am reading 'Deploying Rails Applications' and want to create a Rails clustered deployment setup as described in page 141:
Host: Ubuntu server
Guests: 2 Ubuntu vms, each with Nginx on port 80, a few mongrels (app server for rails) and MySQL
What open source virtualization software do you recommend for this purpose? I am trying virtualbox but heard good things about KVM. I have some questions regarding vbox and posted them on vbox forums - [URL].

I am leading a project at work that will require at least one new server. There will be a development server and a production server, which changes from development will be rolled onto. Unfortunately, I am more of a web programmer than a Linux guru, and I really don't know whether or not it is better to have two physical servers or two virtual servers on one machine. I don't think there will be a huge toll on the machine, as there will probably be around 1000 total users and less than 100 on at any given time. We are also able to spend quite a bit on the server, so I'm sure one could handle it, but I just wanted to check and see what the advantages and disadvantages would be in this situation.
