Red Hat / Fedora :: When Tried To Minimize It, It Disappear?
Apr 18, 2011
I was on this fedora OS, Im not sure whats the version. Was running this application, when i tried to minimize it, it disappear. As the guy who install this application has left, I do not know which folder he installed to. hence i used "whereis" and manage to search out the application.I clicked on the application, it load, but it was a enlarged version. after that it just hanged.--Will a hard reboot solve this problem? We tried getting someone to reboot the system, (he said he did) but I still seeing the same thing(application hanged) on my remote console.i know, that need to find the process to kill it, but at the moment i cant even access the cli/command prompt to enter the kill process command

I am using GNOME Ubuntu 64 bit Lucid Lynx with Cairo Dock, Compiz Fusion, Screenlets
Sometimes when I start up linux the buttons to close, maximize, and minimize windows and the Application title bar disappear. Restarting usually fixes the problem.
Do you have any ideas why this would happen? Is there a command that will restart gnome without having to restart the computer?

I've installed yesterday Fedora 14, 64 bit... Now I wanted to setup the nice graphic effect, but I can't find a way how to setup the minimize effect. I've installed additionally Emerald, ccsm and fusion-icon. I'm starting compiz using Fusion-icon. Just in the ccsm menus and icons I really can't find anymore how to setup those nice things like the magic lamp or there was also an effect which makes the window fold on minimizing (or closing).
And where did the burn effect go? It used to be there at some point in the past? And for closing effects and I didn't find nothing at all? Is there another configuration tool, besides ccsm, do I need to edit some config files in order to setup these things, should I install something more or nowadays. Compiz is losing its effects? Why all the topics regarding graphic effects are only on Ubuntu? Let's write about Fedora too !!

when I hit the shutdown option... I notice my Hibernate and Sleep button are gone... just the other 3 buttons are there.I wonder if it's certain apps I'm running (that can't be allowed to go into Hibernate) or if it just happens at random for no reason.Has anybody else had this problem? and what is causing this?

The problem is after I change wallpaper, logout and log back in the wallpaper reverts back to the previous wallpaper. Here's what I did from fc10 64-bit:
From System->Preferences->Look And Feel->Appearance choose Background tab.
Frolm Background tab click Add button and browse for the .jpg in ~/Wallpaper
Now wallpaper changes but doesn't persist on logout. Could a folders or config file have the wrong permissions?

I did an upgrade to F15 from F13. I was a little skeptical about the upgrade (I had always reinstalled in the past), but so far it seems to have worked great. What were people thinking when they released Gnome? No minimize of resize buttons for all windows (I downloaded the F15 updates today, and there doesn't seem to be any updates to fix the situation). Ridiculous. Who did any testing on this? Once a fix was found for that, I find Gnome to be non intuitive and inefficient regarding response time and user key strokes required.

I have noticed in my pc (i386) and my ps3 (ppc64) under FC12 gnome 2.28 that some icons from some menus doesn't always appear, like in:
Places: Connect Server | Search for Files
System: all
"User name": all
Is this some sort of bug? Or I have done something wrong?

I'm running F14 on an Intel i5 processor with a NVidia GT340 graphics card. Installation works great. Compiz Fusion runs too. At this point, the panels are a little unpredictable, in the sense that some items on the panels disappear and appear as they please; changes only come during startup. The userswitcher is usually absent (but not always). The show desktop icon is sometimes absent, and on a very rare occasion, the desktop switcher is invisible. For all of these items, space is reserved in the panel, and when manually added to the panels, that space is left blank; I can not move anything into that space. It remains reserved for the item that isn't shown.
Then I install conky. First installation works fine, shows all things that are called upon in the .conkyrc file nicely. It works fine until I click anything - even on blank space - on the desktop. Conky then disappears. The process continues to run, but it's no longer displayed. Upon reboot, all of my panels disappear, and I have no idea how to get them back. When I uninstall conky everything works again as before (the userswitcher being the least predictable item on my panels). When I reinstall conky, and add it to my startup items, it shows for a couple of seconds after log-in after which it disappears. I assume - but don't know how to check as I have no panels left so how can I run the system monitor - that the process keeps running, but it isn't displayed.

I'm using Fedora 15 with Gnome 3 on a 32 bit laptop. I noticed that there seems to be a huge memory leak issue with Gnome shell. When I restart it, it is around 20 MB. But it keeps rising, and after around eight hours, I noticed it was around 250 MB! I found a solution online that said to simply restart the shell if the gnome-shell memory consumption becomes too large. While this is fine as a temporary solution, I am looking for a permanent one. Is there a way to minimize/prevent the memory leak other than waiting for the next version of Gnome 3?

No where are how enable get back minimize resize close buttons windows top tab Fedora 15 Gnome3 gconf2
There is a question about this in this thread but the thread title did not have any of the above words in it and since most "new" folks don't think to use the "posts" option, I thought I'd make a new titled post.
This seems to be a big irritant of a lot of people around the net with Gnome 3 so I'm going to confirm what other people have said about how to fix the situation.
In "add software" enter this search term:
gconf
You will see quite a few returns, you should click the following:
A process-transparent configuration system (G Conf1-2.3 yada yada)
Graphical Gconf untilities (it may be pulled with the above however).
Install it/them.
One can then type "Gconf2" in terminal and it will open but then close when the terminal is closed, or one can go to activities/applications/tweak advanced settings( the symbol will be the same as for settings in Gnome 3).
In the "Shell" button one will see "Arrangement of buttons on the title bar". Surprisingly, "All" will already be apparent. One need merely verify that it is on "all".
Close gconf.
Nothing will have happened in terms of new buttons even if one closes and opens, say FireFox.
Then reboot.
After the reboot, all three buttons will be present.
There are not a LOT of configuration items in gconf2 but this one seems to be of paramount importance to a lot of people.
One can also do it from command line, and if someone wants to post that please feel free it won't hurt my feelings.

I installed XFCE on a machine built with the FC 15 LXDE based live CD using yum groupinstall XFCE. I got a usable XFCE session, but after a period of use, some things have gone missing. The windows don't have minimize, resize and close icons on the top bar. The settings selection for "Window Manager Tweaks" doesn't start any program. The programs that are open in the users session are not saved, even though that option is checked. Can this be explained by corruption of a single file somewhere? Or should I re-install XFCE again.

I have a fairly slow connection over a cell phone tether, and when it's not so slow it's metered and I only get 5 gigs a month of faster data (Straight Talk). It's a wonderful thing to be able to do apt-get update and apt-get upgrade every day but I can't afford the bandwidth. Even trying to upgrade once a month takes several days of downloading.
I never wanted bleeding edge code, I'd rather have something stable. I also use OpenBSD and I update that about every 2 years. I took everything mentioning testing out of my sources.list but it's not clear what should be in there.

But now the windows do not close properly, but remain as an inactive background display. As a side note, there's no startup screen, but just some screen garbage, as if an incorrect video driver would have been used. When I do move windows, their shade remains in the background, filling the background with garbage.

I'm so special. For some reason, when i try to minimalize something... ANYTHING! it dissapears. I'm thinking it had something to do with me messing around with Compiz. I have now deleated Compiz, but the problem continues. The effects i turned on in Compiz are also still working. Is there any way to go back the the Compiz default?

With Lucid I gave evolution another try (actually the fourth time I installed a new Ubuntu version) and after some fiddling it worked (the first time, sadly). I like the idea to gather all "message" like things in one tray icon, so basically I like the indicator-applet. However, there is no way to customize it and many users complain about this. One particular issue is that evolution cannot be minimized to this tray icon. There are a lot of workarounds, all of them (to my knowledge) circumventing the indicator-applet and using an individual tray icon. But today, I found out how to do it. So... You want to use the indicator-message icon, but minimize evolution without an entry in the window-list? Devilspie has the "skip_tasklist" capability. So, install devilspie and create a script for evolution mail, e.g. $HOME/.devilspie/evolution.ds like this:
[Code].....
When evolution is started, the script pins evolution (so its available on all workspaces), enables skip_tasklist (so it is not shown in the window list), and minimizes it.
