Red Hat / Fedora :: See Twice As Many Users Browsing Over Ubuntu?
Dec 20, 2010
Is it easier or harder to get support answered in Fedora v. Ubuntu?I see twice as many users browsing fedora over ubuntu. Is this because fedoraforum not good?
I've searched these forums as well as Firefox's site, as well as searching on Google Linux but can't find what I'm looking for.In a nutshell, I want to keep a log of my users' browser history so that even if they clear history or set Firefox to not keep history, I can still view a log of what site they have visited. My hope is that I can write a script(although I'm a BASH newb it would be a nice little real-world project for me to attempt) that would keep info such as user, visit date,ip of visited site, just the basics. A great feature would be for the logs to be emailed to me for inspection but that isn't vital if I can navigate to the log myself.
For all I know this is already available somewhere in the log folders I just can't find anything. If it helps I'm running Mint 9 Isadora and Firefox 3.6.12
What methods exits to restrict which directories a user may browse on the filesystem. I want to prevent php scripts from being able to view system files. I've seen two solutions, but neither are satisfactory:Chrooting a directory that the script is in, but this requires that all the necessary php libraries/files are moved/copied into the right place relative to the chroot directory. I don't feel that I have the technical ability to achieve this.Putting php into safe mode and disabling *nasty* php functions. But this is ineffective if just one obscure *bad* php function is missed.
I am using squid proxy server for sharing Internet in my internal network. I would like to know that how can I check the browsing history by individual users web surfing history by their IP addresses?
I've just installed Slackware 13.1 in two different laptops for first time. I have some strange internet browsing behaviour in one of the laptops. I've installed 2 internet browsers(firefox, opera) using the directions from Slackbuilds.org and there is also konqueror pre-installed. Moreover I installed Wicd network manager.
I can browse some pages e.g. ..... with firefox very slowly but NEVER facebook. I can browse almost any page, even facebook, with OPERA but very very slowly. The same goes with konqueror... Wicd shows that i am always connected with my WPA wireless network
Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.
Dolphin does not currently browse bluetooth devices, and they are not automatically mounted or seen as potentially mountable. [As an interesting aside, I ran into a snag pairing my phone: I can initiate pairing for the first time, with pin and all, from the phone, but I cannot initiate such pairing from the computer. This behavior is identical under KDE and Gnome. Does anyone have a clue why? Both devices were bluetooth visible, so that isn't the problem.]
However, it is still possible to browse bluetooth devices, provided they have been paired, by executing obexfs -b <bluetooth address> <user-writeable mount point>. Unmounting is done through fusermount -u <mountpoint>. Now it seems to me to be very easy to extend Dolphin's functionality (and the device detecting/mounting application) to include the above behavior automatically. Case in point, Nautilus has no problem doing all that.
So, I'd like to file a bug report and prod the appropriate instances, but given that google searches on this issue bring up mostly old pages, I wonder whether anyone know whether (a) this is a KDEBluetooth issue, (b) a Dolphin issue, (c) a Fedora packaging issue, (d) other (please specify).
I use fedora12-Gnome as my major desktop OS. Every basic need was fulfilled , until I tried Fedora12 KDE. The problem is with Bluetooth connectivity to my cell phone device. It connects to the cell phone and set trusted but I can't seem to see any option of "Browse files on Device". Does that mean in KDE I actually can not browse my Bluetooth connected devices?
I was browsing the internet, and while i was loading website, my system hangs. I then goto messages in /var/logs, i get the following messages. What does it mean? This hang occurs once in a while,Also is there a function that could break this hangs by cancel the process (firefox) like Windows "Ctrl-Alt-Del"?
Code: Nov 1 19:20:29 hp-notebook-linux NetworkManager[1357]: <info> Activation (wlan0) Stage 5 of 5 (IP Configure Commit) complete.
I just installed a fresh copy of Fedora 14. When I am browsing the internet it seems like it takes forever to look up the host. In firefox I went and disabled the IPv6 option and it seemed to fix the issue, but Chrome is still having the problem. Is there a way to change this setting in Chrome?
Also I have installed conky but I can't figure out how to get it to start automatically when I log on? Can someone point me to the file I need to edit to make it work?
F14 live installation. Just after installation nautilus was able to show windows networks and computers but I could not add windows shared printer. I have installed samba-client this solved the problem with printer but nautilus stopped show networks and connect to windows shares.
I am totally new to the fedora, and i have installed fedora 12. Once if I connected to internet, it will work 5 to 10 minuts fine, But later onwards i will taking to search.com page where i cannot able work on any websites. Then i checked with my internet service provider, there is no problem they say.
I have a Fedora 11 Server which act like a Internet gateway for our LAN. I have my own iptables andt squid. We daily starts up & shuts down the server. Since last few days I am facing a unique problem. When we starts the server we are able to brows the Internet on the Server but from the client machine we are unable to do so but we can ping any internet sites/Static IP from the Client machines. After 2-5 times of startup and shutdown of the Server. We are able to browse internet from the client machine.
I had a Samba server that worked as expected, but after four years of operation, I had to upgraded for a different reason. After much pain and agony, Samba *almost* works. The Big Problem: On XP, the Samba server "Scully" appears in "My Network Places". On the Vista and Win7, the server is not seen in "Network". The shares can be accessed and mapped if the name \Scully or IP address is provided \192.168.X.Y, but it can not be browsed.
I am trying to download the contents from [URL] to my local system for off-line browsing but am having little to no success. I have tried using wget and httrack, although I can download the directory structure there does not seem to me any sfw files.
I have a 2.6 P4 with HT and 1GB of PC3200. i'm using an RaLink 2760 based wifi card. i compiled the driver from source, don't think it matters because i get this problem on ethernet as well. video is RV280 (radeon 9200). i have 3D accelleration supposively and get 570fps steady with glxgears. i'm in F11 updated as far as yum will take me.
When browsing websites, usually forums but even things like ....., the computer acts like it's being bogged down by something. i scroll down a page and it takes a few seconds for the screen to catch up. i understand i'm not running the most up to date hardware but i don't think this machine should have any problems with web browsing.
I have a connection an its slow in both ff and chrome...however i can ping sites and get the same response time as my xp machine which runs fast. usually around the 40ms mark with no lost packets.
Also when i do installs eg. of chrome etc, i was getting up to 500kB/s download. I just cant seem to replicate this browsing, its loading up at a dial up pace. The last time I had an issue like this was setting up my mums work laptop on our home network where the work had specific proxy settings, so we turn the off and it works fine.
I do not know how to tinker this
INFO:::: broadcom 4306 chip have tried ndiswrapper and bcmxx fwcutter
I installed Fedora 14 XFCE last weekend on my laptop..been putting in a little time here and there into customizing it, as I was trying to make it my new main OS, when suddenly today it suffered a complete meltdown that I have no idea where to start in trying to fix it. All I was doing was browsing through the desktop themes. I hit a certain theme, don't know which one, and the screen went blank. X then looked like it was trying to restart, then blank again. Then X looked like it was restarting, and blank..and repeat endlessly. I tried turning the laptop off and then turning it back on again.same result. Now I basically have a dead system, practically speaking, because I can't use it.
Putting aside the fact that it is immensely frustrating to have a Linux OS choke and die on me just from browsing through the preset desktop themes, does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this, aside from doing another fresh install? The only way I can think of to fix it would be to login into some kind of rescue mode (which I don't know how to do), get to a shell prompt, find the right config file (which I have no clue about, either), and fix the settings to where it will at least boot up, then I can select the default theme and never touch the themes again.
After that I suppose I should put in a bug report or something to Fedora about this -- that is, if I can reproduce it. Maybe that'd be at least some compensation, since I had high hopes for Fedora when I decided to try it, but this sort of crash-and-burn is just utterly disappointing.
I am facing a problem in browsing website with F15 installation, both firefox and chrome browsers give me a headache. The main website that cannot be accessed is facebook.com, I only can browse it in certain of time after clearing cache, cookies and histories, this only happen for facebook web only.

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.
i have a Domain Cotroller installed on Windows & DHCP Server installed on Ubuntu. i want to give access only authenticated Users(Active Directory Users) can get IP from DHCP. No one else canis there any option available here in DHCP ???
how to map all domain users form group Domain Users to local group users (and maybe some more)? Im using Ubuntu 10.04 x32. Its connected to my domain using Samba and Winbind, I can login using my domain credentials, automatically map user folder form DFS server, but I think that domain users have too much priviledges in the system and want to restrict them as much as possible
We are trying to set up a classroom training environment where our SIG can hold classes for prospective converts from Microsoft/Mac. The ten machines will have /home/student01..10 and /home/linsig01..10 as users. We want /home/student01 to be able to explore and sudo so they can learn to administer their personal machines at home. We don't want them to be able to modify (sudo) /home/linsig01. I've seen the tutorial on Access Control Lists but I'd like other input so we get it right the first time.
