Nov 3, 2010is it possible to get the length or even the items of both queues, the run queue and the swap queue? I've googled a lot but had no luck. Maybe I havn't used the correct search words...
Is there any header and/or code example to use structures or any API to get these information from the kernel or the scheduler?

Dec 7, 2010I recently upgraded from Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 on my Dell Latitude E6400 notebook PC. It's a Dual core processor, as seen in the uname provided below:

Since the upgrade, I've noticed some unexplainable behavior: The load average is consistently 0.5 - 1.75 when my PC is completely idle (99% according to top). No processes are in the D (I/O) state, and I have no Zombie processes. This happens on a fresh boot, every time. It gets worse and less worse, and bounces from unusable (cursor stops moving as I type in the terminal, to actually losing keystrokes at times). I'm wondering if anybody else is experiencing similar issues, or knows of a (the) kernel bug which is causing this behavior? Actively researching the issue. Red Hat / Fedora :: Nul Files Appearing With Zero Length
Apr 14, 2010I am working on a system that uses Red Hat Client 5.3. Files keep being created all over the system. They are all named nul and are zero length. We use a common login and thy are owned by this login account. I have grep'd the entire system looking for some code that would be writing these files but nothing has come up.

Also if I type more at the and of this commend like gunzip -c something.gz | more, file would not open. It gives some meaningless characters.I want to open this file with more.

Apr 16, 2011I am running CentOS 5.4 with CUPS v1.3.7 and have a Brother printer (MFC-5895CW) that connects wirelessly to a SonicWall device. The SonicWall is hardwired to my PC. I have found that periodically, the printer queue will become disabled and the only way to re-enable it is to issue a cupsenable command.
I believe that queue only gets disabled if the wireless connection drops in the middle of a print job. I've tried dropping the wireless connection and then bringing it back up when no print jobs are active or pending and the queue is fine for the next print job that is sent when the connection is up.
I did a little research and found that my version of CUPS contains support for an ErrorPolicy setting in the printer.conf file that may prevent the print queue from being disabled. I'm hoping that if I change the default value from "stop-printer" to "retry-job" that this will prevent CUPS from disabling the print queue and requirring a cupsenable command to re-enable the queue.
I don't want to play around with scheduling cron jobs to enable the queue.

Jun 15, 2011My elderly HP Laserjet 4P has worked well for over 15 years. I have it connected to the home network via a Trendnet TE100-P21 Print Server, and setup has always been straightforward and easy. The whole setup has worked quite well with Fedora 9 or 10 thru 14, but then stopped working within the last couple of weeks. I'm assuming an update broke something, as I can find no other reason. When I send a print job or test page, I get a Print Error dialog. The print que shows a "stopped" status for the job. In the Error dialog I use the Diagnose button and step through until I get the Status Messages dialog, which informs me: "The printer's state message is: 'Data file sent successfully'".
Then I enable debugging and send a test page. Stepping through the dialogs it tells me it cannot detect a problem, and gives me an error log, which I've attached. The Trendnet server has a web admin interface. In that interface I can send a test page successfully. Also, I can open a VirtualBox (Windows XP) in Fedora 14, and successfully print from it. My print setup in Fedora is the same as it has been for several years now, and nothing has changed on that end. I have rebooted Fedora and the Trendnet server. All other computers/OS's on the network have no problem printing, only this Fedora 14, and only recently.
Fedora :: Error "Printer Queue Setup Failed - Restart CUPS And Try Again"
Jan 18, 2010I'm having a problem trying to set up my HP OfficeJet 6310 printer with Fedora 12. This is with a clean install, SELinux disabled and Seems to be some issue specific to Fedora, as I've used the same setup with the same hardware without problems in other distributions. I have installed all the HP files I believe should be installed. Anyway, my printer is on my wireless network. I can see the printer on the network, as is the case with my other computers.
I followed the standard setup I use with any other distro....open a terminal and enter "hp-setup." The HP Setup utility opens and I go through the standard procedure of choosing /Network/Ethernet" as my means of connecting. Moving on, the HP OfficeJet 6310 is found without a problem. When I attempt to "Add Printer," however, I am then getting an error. The error shows, "Printer Queue Setup Failed. Restart CUPS and try again." Looking at [URL], I get to CUPS but can get nothing there so far as a printer goes.

One in production (lets call it the OLD ONE) and the other (lets call it the NEW ONE) in tests to replace the OLD ONE.This is the basic hardware of each one: (I can post more detailed info if you need, but beside the erros on dmesg, look at the the L2 cache of the NEW ONE )
Old one:
2 quad core processors that linux recognize as 8 x Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5440 @ 2.83GHz - 32Kb L1 - 6Mb L2
48Gb RAM
New one:
8 quad core processor that linux recognize as 32 x AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 6136 @ 2.400Mhz (- 64Kb L1 - 512Kb L2
128Gb RAM
The scenario:We run a dataflex system on the old one, with average of 3000 users, with tops at 3300 users and sometimes less then 2000. In the old one, we have a load average from 2 to 6 with the 3000 users, depending on the type of application (sometimes we run reports to txt files that take more then 6 hours to complete and the load average can raise to 12). 85% of this conections are from remote links.
Dataflex is a language that derives from C that have their own sgbd (if we can call it that way), and have a limit of 2gb per table. This size we almost have on 5 tables and we use a dataflex feature to compress the data.
The problem:We are migrating (or trying to) the tables to oracle, so we bought new machines for the DB and the new one to replace the old one, becouse we think that could not handle the job with 2 oracles (load balance).In some tests we could see (or suposed) that the oracle database was not so fast with more then 1000 users (opening same table and doing the same task) and we decided to test the new one with the system that is in production right now, with dataflex tables, to ensure that the problem could be oracle.We change the HDs and IP. Started the system on the new one, and started to monitorate as the real users start their jobs. At 800 users the Load Average raised to 26 and with 1300 users we had more then 115 on Load Average. More users login in and the TOP become slow, pointing 400 of LA. From here we started to get some "Lock time out" erros and we had to change to the old one again, to prevent corruption on the tables. I'm analizing all report tools I know about performance and hardware and I cant see nothing. I saw some errors on dmesg, but I can say that is related to that problem.

and now I want to calculate the average of the resulting numbers. I know I could write a bash or awk or perl script and use that, but isn't there a more simple, elegant way? There is for example "sum" in the coreutils, but no "avg"..
Ubuntu :: 10.04: High Load Average At Idle
May 5, 2010Since upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, my system is noticeably less responsive and exhibits halting behavior for at times 10s of seconds. There is nothing obvious in the various logs that I can find. The only objective indication I can find that demonstrates that something is seriously wrong is that my load average never drops below 0.5 and is often over 1.5, even at idle. In this situation, top/ps/whatever shows very few processes running (usually just top). This suggests to me that either the new kernel scheduler is horrible or that something new is resulting in blocking I/O or other uninterruptable sleeps.Typical top output:
