Red Hat / Fedora :: Unable To Set Correct Time

Mar 30, 2011

I have a number of CentOS 5.5 virtual machines running on VMware ESXi 4. Most of them are fine, but one of them has the incorrect time and no matter what I try I can't get it to display properly. The time seems to be 15 hours behind and I think that might be because the original source virtual machine was an appliance built in Canada and my timezone is Australia/Sydney.

/etc/sysconfig/clock:
UTC=true
ARC=false
ZONE="Australia/Sydney"

[Code]...

I thought that was all of the settings I needed to make. Is there something else I've missed? Why can't I get the time right?

OpenSUSE :: When I Set The Timezone To Europe/UK The Date/time Are Correct UNTIL Reboot The Laptop?

Feb 25, 2010

I just installed OpenSuse 11.2 3 months ago on my laptop. I'm running with the Gnome Desktop. I live in Chicago and am currently in London. When I set the timezone to Europe/UK the date/time are correct UNTIL I reboot the laptop. After reboot if I type in the 'date' command it shows the time at 6+ hours from London time. When I check the hardware clock 'hwclock' it displays the correct London time. I check the time setup with yast and it shows the correct Timezone but again shows the 6+ hours difference. I change the time in yast and and my applications ( e-mail) display the correct local time again... UNTIL I reboot and then I'm right back where I started - wrong local time ! I suppose I could write a little startup script to do a 'hwclock --hctosys' but I thought I'd check here first to see if anyone out there had any ideas..BTW - I hate to say this but on the same laptop running XP I don't have this problem AND I didn't see this problem in OpenSuse 10.3 or 11.1

Debian Hardware :: Unable To Set Correct Resolution

Nov 1, 2010

I recently built a new computer and moved over my old graphics card, a nVidia GTX 275. Everything appeared to work fine, it booted with no drama etc.

I use my computer for work and gaming, all my work, web browsing, chat etc happens on Debian. I play games on Windows 7.I did a fresh Debian install on this box and everything went smoothly until starting xdm for the first time, it wouldn't go to a higher resolution than 640x480. I'd already installed the proprietary nVidia drivers and they appeared to be working fine, just at the wrong resolution.

Programming :: Expect/TCL - Unable To Get The Correct Results

Feb 8, 2011

I'll post the entire code here, and then specifically highlight what is just failing in a fashion I'm apparently incapable of fixing a few hours later:

Code:

#!/usr/bin/expect
# The script should be called with a file in the directory called sshServerList
# That file has the following format:
# Line # | Contents of line

[code]....

I've had all kinds of different results and problems, but I've never been able to successfully log into multiple servers, though the first server in the list most times works okay (though might not on this iteration). I'm a bit hack and slash and I would be very greatful not only for a solution, but any tips on how I should have done this and places where I could clean up my code.

OpenSUSE Install :: Update From 11.2 To 11.4 - Unable To Get Correct Display Using Zypper Tool?

Jul 10, 2011

I used the zypper dup tool to upgrade my HP Pavilion dv6000 laptop and my display is now broken into columns and partially obscured. I can barely see anything on it. When I ran zypper it stopped about half way and locked up.I then ran it again to completion. At boot, GRUB gives me my startup options as before and is clearly readable with good resolution. When I select openSuse to start it, the screen goes blank for a few seconds and then comes back with the screen problems.

The problem continues all the way into KDE. I have approximately four columns displayed but I can barely see anything. Most of the lower half of what should be displayed is obscured so I cannot load any applications. If I right click, I can make out the dialog box and select the run command. From there I reran the zypper command using the 'zypper up rpm' option and it says "nothing to do" and the "highest update version is already installed."

The display problem also exists if I use the failsafe boot option. I remember having to download nVidia driver last year to get a better resolution, but 11.2 (64 bit) worked great until the repositories stopped working and I no longer was able to load software. Now I can't use the computer to download and burn a DVD version of 11.4. Again, I do seem to be able to use the terminal, so I could presumably fix something with it if I had the right commands and I do seem to have access to the repositories.

Ubuntu :: Constantly Getting "E:Unable To Correct Problems, You Have Held Broken Package"

Oct 23, 2010

I am running 64-bit Lucid; would running 64 bit be the problem? Anyway, A few of the packages I've been trying to install include Wine 1.3 and a proprietary ATI FGLRX graphics driver for my Laptop's Radeon 4250 graphics card. Many other things I try to install from the Synaptics Package Manager (or anywhere, including the Ubuntu Software Centre) come up with the "E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken package" as well. It is very frustrating and it is a very vague error. Is it my 64 bit Ubuntu or is it already installed packages that are broken...?

Fedora :: Network Time Protocol Part Of Date / Time Settings

Oct 3, 2009

I've got fedora 11 set up to use network time protocol to sync my laptop's date & time when I'm on-line. The question is simple really, I've added a local universality's time server (what is public) and it's live. but it's added to the end of the default time servers what come with fedora. How do I get fedora to just use the local time server, is it a case of removing the default time servers for fedora, but there is a box what says advanced options which are. sync system clock before starting service ???? & use Local time source (( is that the same as the local ntp server that I've got set up ))Hope some body can help me with the network time protocol part of Date/Time settings.

Fedora :: Need To Correct Boot

Sep 9, 2009

Ran a dual boot with vista and fedora 10 and wanted to put something else on the drive that fedora lived on and in my ignorance just formated over the fedora drive (well...I wanted to see what would happen anyway ). Problem is I forgot the computer likes to know how to boot and now when I start it BIOS gives it's little screen and then goes to a blank with a cursor.What I think is going on is that the boot record is looking for something on my D drive and when it finds the formatted drive it just puts up a blank.

I'm told my vista disc has a utility that will fix the problem and boot my C drive where windows lives but I haven't been able to find it. I'd like to just change the boot and not lose any data so anything that would help me do that would be great.

Fedora :: Where To Get Correct (F12) Kernel Sources

Mar 7, 2010

Building an nVidia driver requires sources for the currently-running kernel. In my case (Fedora 12), it is, according to 'uname -a',
2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686

I thought I could get the sources with 'yum install kernel-sources', but there is no such package. Then I tried 'yum install kernel-devel'. That package exists, but the kernel is
2.6.32.9-67.fc12.i686

This is clearly not the correct version.

Fedora :: Screen Resolution Does Not Seem Correct

Mar 10, 2011

I have some experience with Linux (mostly Ubuntu) but absolutely none with Fedora. In fact I have needed to re-install twice just to get to this stage. I now have a fully updated Fedora 14 Gnome desktop. I have (finally) got Nvidia graphics drivers up and running. I can open the Nvidia Settings screen and everything looks ok except that the desktop screen resolution doesn't seem correct. I have a Sony Vaio with default screen resolution of 1920x1200. In Nvidia settings it was set to AUTO, but I've changed that as root user to 1920x1200 with a refresh rate of 60 Hz and rebooted. My desktop looks quite good, but it's not 1920x1200 - maybe 1600x1200? Perhaps. How do I confirm the current resolution?

I have run
Code:
glx info | grep direct
and the output is
Code: direct rendering: Yes
GL_EXT_Cg_shader, GL_EXT_depth_bounds_test, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,
Which I presume is ok?

Fedora :: Terminal - Tty2 Display Is Not Correct

Feb 13, 2010

I am new to Fedora. I just put it on my H.P AMD Quad core machine. I have eight gigs of ram and plenty of storage. I loaded it into Microsoft Virtual PC, and it boots fine and seems to work ok in tty1. I am a cit student at a community college and seem to get little to no support from my teacher who is teaching a beginning course on Linux. He told me to ask here. When I use ctrl-alt-f2 or f3-f4 and so on all the way up the levels, I got green lines across the screen, as if the graphics card is not working. I have 23 inch monitor and a Nvidia 9500 GT ddr3 512mb graphics card that I installed after I bought the computer. My host operating system is Windows 7 , and is working fine. I am now two weeks behind on labs for this class and getting nervous, I need to be able to go to tty2 to do these labs.
