maybe this is something extremely simple and my brains are just mush after a whole night of struggling (and succeeding) with wifi driver issues.i'm running a brand new 10.10 netbook on a brand new asus eee 1015. i am trying to set up my email in evolution and the evolution windows are larger than the netbook screen, which means that the OK, SAVE, etc buttons are outside reach. i tried to resize, move window - resizing doesn't work and it only moves horisontally, not vertically.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have no drive failures but just need to recreate a raid5 set as the next free MD disk number. Originally I built a temp OS of debian on a single drive and had 4x2TB drives in a raid5 software array (MD0) this worked fine and allowed me to move all data to it, and remove our old fileserver. I have now pulled out the 4 x 2TB Raid 5 drives and created a new OS on two new 80GB drives, partioned as follows,
MD0 is now 250mb Raid1 as /boot
MD1 is 4GB Raid1 Swap
MD2 is 76GB Raid1 as /
If I turn off and push back in the 4x2TB drives I cannot see a MD3. I presume I would need to create a MD3 from these 4 drives but I dont want to mess things up as its live data. So im here asking for help, or a bit of hand holding to get it done right.
PS - Its a Debian Lenny 5.0.3 Raid1 fresh install replacing a Debian Lenny 5.0.3 on a single disk.
I know you can fail and then remove a drive from a RAID5 array. This leaves the array in a degraded state.
How can you remove a drive and convert the array to just a regular, clean array?
Note: This how-to assumes you are using LVM on top of the RAID5

(To those who do a bit of weather research, I'm trying to compile both WRF and WPS on 64 bit Linux.) I finally compiled the program on 64 bit Fedora 14, and now I'm running out of space on this partition. Is there a way to increase the size of a partition without uninstalling the current OS? I don't mind what happens to the other partitions, but I put quite a bit of effort in this current one. Also, the program demands that all of the data be contained in the same home directory, so I can't keep files in other partitions.

it does say nothing about creating an partition on the /dev/md0, although Gnome Disk Utility allows to do that - if I just run mkfs.xsf /dev/md0 - it works fine, yet Disk Utility tells me that disk has not been partitioned, see image:

when i have installed fedora 14 from the live CD....i noticed fedora give 4.9 GB SWAP partion:mad and give the root another 4.9 GB.... every time i monitor the swap is free cuz my RAM is 3 GB.... I want resize my root and take the space from the SWAP and give the SWAP only 1 GB... im worried that i miss up with system.... any clean graphical interface recommend me...? or any clean way to resize..?

I would like to know that whenever I am going to install any new software or packages then it will be installed in which folder or partition? I have only 170 mb space free in user and have not installed any thing yet. Do I need to resize it. If yes, then how can I do so?
I had FC 14 installed on an SSD, and 4 500Gig drives in a software RAID-5 configuration. However, just recently, my FC14 failed horribly. Fortunately my admin had recently backed up the /etc directory. When FC14 failed, he reinstalled FC14 on the SSD. Is there any way for me to re-establish the RAID-5 drives, since they were not affected?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI resized all of my partitions using GParted, I got Windows 7 and Vista to boot up again ok but I can't get F11 to boot. I am not using GRUB nor do I want to, I tried using the install disks and doing a repair and "chroot"-ed my filesystem and everything is still there, there is just something small missing that I am not remembering to do. I have the NST files on my Windows drives and it tries to boot but F11 complains that there is no boot disk. I'll try to boot once again and write down the exact error message.

Is there any quick and easy way to be viewing a giant folder of images in the file viewer and then just highlight a few that you want to resize to 800x600 (or whatever)? Currently I have to pull them into GIMP and then resize each one. Alternatively, I can pretty easily do a command line to resize the whole folder, but I don't really need every image resized. I'm mainly going through and thinking "oh, be fun to send this one to so and so" but I don't want to send them the eitire 18Megapixel image. A nice quick resize to 50Kb and 800x600 or something would be perfect but this just hasn't appeared for me yet.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu for about a year and I decided to switch to Fedora just to see how it goes with getting everything in my system working again. I would say that with Ubuntu and Fedora installations I have installed and reinstalled 15 times, which I mention because I am not new to installing linux. I have used GParted to partition and resize my HD numerous times and reinstalled linux on a partition and so on. I know how to do all of that without any problems.
NOW HERE IS WHAT HAPPENED... I installed Fedora on my Desktop which I had partitioned into a 190 GB partition onto which Windows is installed and then I had another 30 GB partition onto which I chose to install Fedora. I chose the "replace existing Linux systems" in anaconda... and what resulted was a 30 GB partition with Fedora that is now showing up as LVM. I have never seen an LVM partition and I am not sure if I can use GPARTED to resize it without destroying it. I have used GPARTED to resize Linux partitions before, but they were never showing up as LVM. The forums on GPARTED only show info from about a year or two ago.
Here is what I want to do (and reading around on forums doesn't really give a good explanation of whether it is possible)... Is it possible to install Linux Mint into that 30 GB Fedora LVM partition by just resizing the Fedora part of the volume? So, the question is this: How can I resize the Fedora part of the LVM volume and then install Mint into that LVM partition?
If Fedora was on an ordinary 30 GB partition I would have no problem with using GPARTED to chop that in half and then use the 15 GB I freed up to install Mint. I just don't want to destroy the Fedora stuff by messing around the with the LVM partition so I would like to hear from others who have worked around this issue and please don't link to the ordinary LVM howto's you get through a simple google search as I have already read them and I don't find them too illuminating.
I joined the fedora irc channel and asked how to delete a partition. We actually decided that we could not delete the partition I wanted to delete because it was a root partition. After unmounting the partition, and one other partition with a really long directory name, all of my applications disappeared. I need a safe surefire way to resize a root partition. I don't want to unmount anything because we don't know if we'll be able to mount it again.

So I get it..do a normal mdadm --grow...after around 1100 minutes .. FINISHED!..whee..happy...
I decide to do a upgrade to 2.6.29.2-52.fc10.x86_64 to get the fix for growing the ext4..

I'm currently in the process of getting my server moved over from a Server 2003 machine to one based on Fedora 12. My issue is that I have an existing RAID5 array on a rr1740 card. When I install this in the new system each individual drive show up as sdc sdd etc not as one volume. I have tried installing the highpoint driver but I get an error that sata_mv cannon't be unloaded. I have tried adding this to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist to no avail.
System currently looks like this. ASUS mini ITX Atom D510 based board with 2x on board SATA, attatched to these are a 160GB OS drive, 400GB data drive. Highpoint RR1740 PCI card with 5x500GB drives in RAID5.
I am able to retrieve data off a RAID5 array. History: My system disk was partitioned to 10 gigs and over time was filled up to 100% locking me out of the GUI (I am a casual user). Now that I am relegated to the CLI, I need help to see if rebuilding the array and keeping the data intact is possible. I have three sata hard drives in the array and now it appears during the boot process, it fails and can't find the array.
I did the following:
mdadm -D /dev/md0
and here's some of the output:
State: active, FAILED, Not Started
And out of three drives, it states that two have failed. I find this hard to believe as I have had no issues until my system disk was full. A coworker today helped me find some files to delete and now have the system disk down to 97%/8.8 gigs yet I can still not enter the GUI due to the array issue.
Out of the three discs, here are the results (taken also from mdadm -D /dev/md0):

Sorry for providing so little, but I am in (Repair Filesystem) mode and only have local access to the machine meaning all outputs will need to be retyped.

The machine's original drive held the superblock for the raid array and it just had a massive heart attack. I've searched, my biggest source being URL...I can't tell if I can reassemble the superblock info lost with the original hard drive or if I've lost it all...

I thought it would be a 9TB partition, and Ubuntu says it is a 9TB partition except when looking at what drive space is left.Nautilus' Properties and System Monitor both say that the raid is 4.1TB with 1TB free but Disk Utility and Nautilus say it is a 9TB RAID. very odd. I have tried checking the raid and the xfs file system. no errors.here is from watch cat /proc/mdstat

I have a huge problem with my file server (OpenSuse 11.3 - 64bit, kernel-2.6.34.7-0.7-default). I've just installed an Intel SASUC8I card, connected 3 of the 7 Samsung 2TB drives I have to it and after about one hour, it dropped 2 of the disks. I've managed to trace the problem to the card BIOS, which I've replaced with the non-raid edition, so it should now work fine with the kernel raid now. The problem is that I can't find a way to "un-fail" these 2 disks. I'm more than positive, that these drives are just fine, only the controller was misbehaving. The dropout also couldn't have created any data inconsistency either, since the 2 drives dropped out virtually at the same time and there was no writing being done at the time. I've tried add/re-add, I get either mdadm: cannot get array info for /dev/md0 or mdadm: add new device failed for /dev/sdi1 as 7:
Invalid argument (depending on the raid being run or being stopped, in either case, mdstat reports it to be inactive)
For a normal or forced assemble, I get mdadm: /dev/md0 assembled from 5 drives and 1 spare - not enough to start the array.I've been googleing like crazy, also trying to get info from mdadm's help and man, but nothing seems to deal with such a freak accident. An other interesting thing is, that if I reboot the system, mdstat shows md0 as inactive, but lists all the devices with no flags. It's only after a run command, that it changes to the 5 remaining devices, all with (S) flags. Alternatively: does anyone know where device failure info is stored? If I could in some way remove this information from the system (even by reinstalling the OS), I should be able to reassemble the array... Or is it stored in the member drive super-blocks? About 80% of this array's data is backed up, so if all else fails, I can restore most of its content, but I'd much prefer to reassemble this one as a whole, since there was absolutely no chance of data corruption.
Here is what I have and what I want to do.
3 new 1.5TB HD. 1 used 1.5TB hd with 980MB of data. I want to set up a raid 5 with a hot spare. I have music, pictures, videos, and movies (About 2.8TB worth). I have had a mismatch of drives previously, 250GB, 2 320GB, 500GB, 2 1TB and now a 1.5TB all with data. I have removed the one 250 and 2 320s and put the data on the 1.5TB that is currently installed.
What I would like to do is create a raid5 with the three new 1.5TB HD's, copy the data over from the currently installed 1.5TB and then grow or add that drive as a hot spare. Or just add it and then add another 1.5TB down the road as a hot spare don't know for sure.
In addition since I have 2 1 TB drives, I could add 2 more (Good deals on 1 TB drives right now) and have a total of 4 1TB drives. Could I have 2 raid5's (4-1TB's and 4-1.5TB's)in two separate arrays? I really do not know if that makes sense or not but here comes LVM. I am tired of managing my HD space and since i have multiple folders (Movies, music, pictures, videos) and within the movies folder I have R, G & PG folders for the ratings of the movies. (Pwd protect the R so the kids can't get to it) So with LVM installed with the Raid5 I should be able to create my folders and just keep adding data and not worry about moving folders around when I grow the storage by adding new drives. Is that correct? Maybe someone could point me to a how to.
Also, if I create 2 arrays (And I need to know so I can order the 2 additional 1TB drives), then I could put all the music, G and PG content on the one array and all the R and spicy stuff on the other and password protect it.
I am trying to build a new array after adjusting TLER on my disks, which permanently changed some of the drives sizes. I am not sure if the following inconsistencies are related to the newly mismatched drive sizes.
