I've got a server that has bond0 and bond1 setup. I'm documenting some things in case I need to failover and bring up my secondary server up as primary... I just need to know if simply creating the interface ifcfg-bond0:0 with a new IP address obviously of the crashed system,,, is all that needs done or do I need to load bond0:0 module in /etc/modules.conf also?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do some network bonding in RHEL 5.4, and I'm not seeing the results I expect. I have set up a number of servers using mode 1 with no issue, but I need to configure a new server differently. bond1 is created from eth1 & eth2 bonded together using mode 802.3ad with layer2 lacp bond0 is created from bond1 & eth3 using mode active-backup with bond1 as the primary interface When I bring the network services up, all traffic is passing over eth3 instead of bond1, which is the primary. Below are the modprobe.conf * ifcfg-* files involved.
My modprobe.conf:

I have two servers that have been running link aggregation and VLAN trunking for years. I've installed larger drives in one and done a fresh minimal install. In spite of configuring as before the network will not come up. I did discover that a minimal install will not install vconfig which was causing one particular error when the VLANs tried to come up and this has been solved by installing vconfig. However, at this point the problem appears to be not bonding eth0 and eth1. /proc/net/bonding/bond0 indicates: "bond bond0 has no active aggregator"
If I put the old drives back in and boot the old OS everything starts up fine. I was even able to get it working with:
modprobe bonding
ip link set dev bond0 up
ifenslave bond0 eth0 eth1
service network restart
however, it does not survive a reboot. Is the a bug in the 2.6.18-194.11.4.el5PAE kernel or the network scripts? The the previous kernel I am running is 2.6.18-128.1.10.el5PAE For what its worth, these are the configurations:

I have 4 DSL modems connected with 4 different ISP's my scenario is
a) My FC-2 machine with LAN IP=192.168.10.1 and Bond0 IP=192.168.1.1
b) Modem-A LAN IP= 192.168.1.2 , ext IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
c) Modem-B LAN IP=192.168.1.3, ext IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
d) Modem-C LAN IP=192.168.1.4, ext IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
e) Modem-D LAN IP=192.168.1.5, ext IP=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
Modem-A, B, C, and D LAN connected with my FC-2 machine, and all 4 interfaces of my machine are in Bond0, Now please help me what default Gateway I should set in my FC-2 machine?>??? or I have to set 4 gateways in my machine?and will this configuration works?
When I do service network start it is giving me the error grep : can not find directory ifcfg-ifcfg-eth0....

Setup : internet -- VirtualBoxHost -- WIFI-switch -- clients
VirtualBoxHost hosts several Virtual Machines and has 2 interfaces. Wan-interface is not used by VirtualBoxHost, but is directly mapped to the Virtual Machine Endian Firewall.
What I want:
Access to VM's for the Wifi-clients AND access from WiFi-clients to VirtualBoxHost.

- create bridge
- add LAN-interface to bridge
- create tap0
- add tap0 to bridge
Virtual Machine uses tap0
Wifi-clients are connected via LAN-interface, via bridge, to VM's. But my host-machine is not accessible from a WLAN-client and also I can not access a VirtualMachine from my host-machine. A WLAN-client can connect to a VirtualMachine without problem. I think with my bridge the local LAN and the VM's are now connected. How to put also my host-machine in the LAN? As a LAN-client.
I was wondering if I could create a bridge between two wireless interfaces. So that when there is a WAN that filters MAC's, 2 different computers which aren't in the WAN white list can connect to the WAN via me. Is that possible? And how?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've used Fedora 11 and 12, and I found autoten which automatically installs a lot of necessary software and provides an easy GUI interface to do so. I switched to Ubuntu Karmic recently and now I'm working on customizing all the bugs that come with my computer. So far, I've fixed compiz-fusion, the sound problem with ALSA, as well as customizing the theme to the way I like it (by fixed I don't mean it was a reported Launchpad bug, but just that I customized it to my liking or it wasn't previously working on my laptop and it is working now).
So my question is, am I able to (even though my knowledge is limited), able to make some sort of batch script that will automatically apply the changes I wish every time I update my kernel? Or, just for simplicity's sake, I may stay with 9.10 for a while and have this script to apply my changes if/when I have to uninstall/reinstall. I know it's fairly simple to make a batch file in Windows, so I'm hoping it will be just as easy in Linux. (I know, comparing apples to oranges).
What is the Linux command to clear IP address of an interface without bringing it down and/or restarting network services. Seems strange ifconfig is able to change IP address but has no option to clear it, or am I wrong?

The WAN IP of the interface is not really 1.2.3.4 I just changed that IP for security reasons.What I am trying to figure out, is it possible to assign a private IP address to the same interface or can I only have one IP address per interface. I understand I have a mask of /32 so I am not going to be able to subnet the address to create any more addresses, so I assume I am stuck with the WAN IP (public IP) that I have, and just need to deal with it.
The reason I ask this is because I have been reading through several DNS/BIND tutorials/walk-throughs, and a lot of them specify setting up a intranet access with 192.168.1.1 address for the local DNS server, but since I am connecting to the sever via SSH I figure I do not need a private IP address.

Notice the 2 in address. Seems to me it doesn't like the network and wants it to be 172.16.0.0, but I am adding to a network already configured this way.
how to do a virtual interface under linux. I'm using for example eth0:1 so ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.0.20 netmask 255.255.255.0 for example.
However if i do eth0:1 hw ether 00:11:22:33:44:55 It changes eth0 as well. Where should i look into for creating a separate virtual interface that's simply bridged with one of the existing interfaces that has a separate ip and hw address that the os handles.
Someone just erased my HWADDR line from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0. How can I obtain my original MAC address?

ifconfig eth0 does not work (it shows the wrong MAC address) since the HWADDR line from the file I mentioned above was erased. Also there is no ifcfg-eth0.bak backup configuration file.
Just curious, because it seems my wireless connection works regardless of whether or not the MAC address is listed there. I'm just curious why that option is there to add it if it works regardless.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to configure multiple virtual ethernet interfaces over a single physical ethernet interface (eth0) and for each virtual interface the MAC address must be unique and the IP address must be Static.Finally all the virtual interfaces must be able to communicate both internally and externally and the traffic should be captured using wireshark.
I need to have such kind of setup to communicate devices individually using one physical ethernet device.
Because I was fiddling with few kernel modules like MACVLAN and MACVTAP and successfully enabled those modules and rebuild kernel. Using macvlan and macvtap I can configure virtual interfaces with unique mac address and static IPs but while capturing packets using wireshark interfaces behave weirdly.
For example say on HOST machine I have 1 physical interface and created 3 virtual interfaces as shown below.
Interfaces :
eth0 (physical ethernet interface)
IP: 192.168.A.A
MAC: aa:aa:aa:aa:aa:aa

First from above interfaces I started pinging eth0 internally from host machine in which it worked as usually.
Second I did same externally from other machine which is connected to the same network of Host machine, and this did work as usually.
Third I pinged first virtual interface veth0 both internally and externally and this also works and after that I did check source and destination MAC address using wireshark tool-where both showed up there respective MAC address.
Now triggers the issue, where I pinged second virtual interface same like I did for first one, but this time ping was success and where as in wireshark tool the MAC address for veth0 is picked by veth1. This is where I got stuck and this issue happened for all the remaining virtual interfaces.
I couldn't see any virtual interface showing their respective MAC address, as of the remaining except the first virtual interface has been picking the first veth0 mac address.
I have two network interfaces in my pc eth0 and wlan0 and a virtual one br0.
router <= eth0 (0.0.0.0) => br0 (192.168.1.10) <= wlan0 (0.0.0.0) => other pc.
On startup of my pc (ubuntu 10.04 server x64), samba bind itself only to loopback network interface, as i can see when i do netstat -an , preventing me to enter in my shares from a remote pc.
Here is my configuration regarding samba network:

where are the interface configurations (set by ifconfig, not the static ones) stored? I'm asking because I'm trying to understand, more broadly, the order of IP address lookup. If I ping the local machine (localhost, or one of the interfaces) no messages get sent out (at least according to wireshark), so some local lookup must be taking place.

I have setup bonding for mode=6 with miimon=100 using eth0 and eth1 (both are Intel 10/100/1000 ports using an aic79xx network driver).

I'm bonding the two NICs on my FC10 server to create a bonded LAG between it and my Cisco Catalyst switch, but during kernel init, the system always give me a notice that "bond0 doesn't appear to exist" so it skips it.Once I log in, I can always open Network Manager and the bond0 interface goes from "Inactive" to "Active" and bond0 immediately works, and I can restart the appropriate network services and everything is fine. But any idea why this bonding wouldn't be initializing during boot up? The ports on the Cisco are configured for hard set speed and duplex and portfast is turned off on them.Is there a guide for best practices for creating LAGs (bonded interfaces) between FC10 and Cisco switches?

I was able to bond eth1 and eth2 together as bond0, but I am having problems with setting up two gateways on bond0. I can set one (eg ISP1) and all the traffic always routes through that ISP. Thus defeating the purpose of bonding. eth1 and eth2 pull an ip just fine and were able to ping the internet before bonding. Originally, I set the bond0 ip to the same subnet at my internal network, but I read that in order to set up nat you need to have the adapters on two seperate subnets.
Every time I fix one issue with this scenario something else breaks. I have tried dozens of different configurations. I am relatively sure that it is just a routing table issue, but I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction.

When I create virtual ethernet interface and do a ping -I <v_int> <host> the outgoing address is the one of the physical interface and NOT the virtual interface.Is there no chance that trafic will go out with virtual interface address??Incoming trafic is done well i.e. responds to the virtual interface have the virtual address.
My problem is that I have 2 modems and want to check both default gw behind the modems.
If I do a "normal" ping both are reachable over default route even the modem which is not the default route will not work because ping goes over the working modem.So I have 2 routing tables and want to route the virtual interface to one modem the other to the other modem

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 2 10gb fiber cards on a server running red hat 5.3, eth4 and eth5. After replacing the eth4 card, it doesnt show up any ifcfg-eth4 file. I tried ifconfig -a, but it doesnt show up in modprobe.conf either, although it is listed when I do a lspci. Should I manually add it? or is there something Im missing here?
