View 3 RepliesI bought a SheevaPlug (a.k.a. Plug Computer Basic), which has a regular USB port. The SheevaPlug uses an ARM processor from Marvell. It ships with Ubuntu 9.04, but apparently, later versions of Ubuntu can't run on that CPU, and, although other *nixes are available (Fedora, FreeBSD, etc.), Debian (Squeeze) seems the most active OS available for that hardware.
To turn the SheevaPlug into a telephony solution with Asterisk, I was wondering if someone had successfully connected a USB handset to the SheevaPlug's USB port. That would make a simpler design than adding an IP phone to the mix.
I've just started playing around with a Sheevaplug running a very light version of Ubuntu. I'm planning to run it with an SD card to store all my server data and a USB stick to regularly back up some of it.My problem is that the 2 partitions on my SD card mount fine at boot, but my USB stick's single partition does not. Could it be that the mounts specified in fstab are done before my USB device has finished getting alive? Mounting the USB stick manually works perfectly well.
fstab
Code:
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/sda1 /media/usb1 ext2 defaults 0 0
/dev/mmcblk0p1 /media/sd1 ext2 defaults 0 0
/dev/mmcblk0p2 /media/sd2 ext2 defaults 0 0
dmesg after boot
Code:
ehci_hcd: USB 2.0 'Enhanced' Host Controller (EHCI) Driver
orion-ehci orion-ehci.0: Marvell Orion EHCI
orion-ehci orion-ehci.0: new USB bus registered, assigned bus number 1
orion-ehci orion-ehci.0: irq 19, io mem 0xf1050000
orion-ehci orion-ehci.0: USB 2.0 started, EHCI 1.00
usb usb1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice
hub 1-0:1.0: USB hub found
hub 1-0:1.0: 1 port detected
Initializing USB Mass Storage driver.....
In the dmesg
Code:
usb-storage: device scan complete
comes after
Code:
EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
EXT2-fs warning: mounting unchecked fs, running e2fsck is recommended
which makes me think the USB stick has missed the fstab train the 2 SD card partitions are on. And changing the order of the entries in fstab does not make any difference either.
I'm not planning to reboot my Sheevaplug every 5 minutes, but I like things to be nice and clean.
I can't seem to be able to save a file properly with java on the sheevaplug (ubuntu)
Here's my test-code:
Code:
try {
File f = new File("test.txt");
System.out.println(f.exists());
[Code]....
it seems to save the file, but nothing that is readable in ubuntu.
I'm using the openjdk-6-jre package by the way.
EDIT: NVM! Forgot to cd into the directory holding the jar before running, so it was working but it was saving to the $HOME dir...
I am working on a Linux embedded C++ project. When I do an install, all of the header files are copied into the target at /usr/include/.My question is, why would the target ever need the C++ header files? It seems to me all the target needs is the executables and the library *.so files.I want to remove the installation of header files into the target but I'm afraid I'm missing something.

Even though I told it to install the boot loader on /dev/sda7, it installed it on /dev/sda and messed up my other settings. I would like to report a bug, however, when I go to Launchpad and select "report Ubuntu bug" I get sent to this page:[URL]I can see how to report a bug for a currently running process (which would be hard if the process has just crashed), I can see how to request new software/features, but there is nothing for the installer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble getting the debian installer to detect an existing LVM
I installed Lenny on LVM on top of RAID 1.
My system looks like this:
I just added two 1.5 TB drives in raid 1 to the logical volume group home 100% added to /home /dev/md3
I went to reinstall the system from the lenny disc and now the installer does not recognize the LVM. It did recognize the LVM before I added md3 to the LVM.
During the partition editor, if i go to a terminal (by going to another window/console) and give the command vgdisplay it says that physical volume with UUID V0S1Yx-361r-NZaE-w1Fy-kCFQ-9MmH-g287vh cannot be found. You will see below that the UUID refers to /dev/md3 (the added 1.5 raid 1 array)
Below is the output of "pvdisplay" and "mdadm --detail /dev/md3"
I don't know if this has to do with it but /dev/md3 is the only array that says local to host yield [yield is my hostname] next to its UUID after the mdadm --detail command.
I recently downloaded the Universal USB Installer v1.1 and put Ubuntu on the flash drive.I put it into my laptop, and had it set to boot from flash drive, and it didn't do anything. Is it supposed to just auto run from the flash drive and format my hard drive and put Ubuntu on it?

View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to mod the installer from one distribution to another? For instance i prefer Mandrake's or Pardus's installer's partitioners to Debian's. They are graphical and seem to be more intuitive to me. I've reading up on Linux installers, and I think it would be really cool to could create a mash up of sorts, take the best of installers from each distro and make a new one. Or maybe port(there must be a better word), your favorite installer onto your favorite distribution. Imagine installing Debain via YALI
I know it'll take a lot of work, YALI is made using Python and Qt, d-i uses Gtk (for the graphical frontend to cdebconf). Besides, installers are among the most critical components in the whole setup, i mean a broken installer would mean lots of work for the users and consequently for the dev community. Plus the package management systems differ from distribution to distribution. I guess i am looking for thoughts on this, this isn't exactly a standard question
Just downloaded the Slackware 13.37 ISOs and proceded to begin the installation processHowever, once the setup program gets to the stage where it looks for the CD drive containing the slackware media, no CD drive is found.Looking in /dev doesn't seem to yield any results - no hdx, sdx, or srx devices, apart from my hard drives. When starting, the following kernel messages are printed a number of times:

i am trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on an eee pc 1000H but the installer is hanging on the installation dialog that shows the check list for installation (min. disk space, connected to the net, plugged in to wall outlet, etc) i check all the options here and then click forward. this is where the installer is hanging.

After booting machine with CentOS 5. DVD, initrd.img will do some command to initialize everything to start installing CentOS. At this time, I need put some command so that I can enter some values and store them in a file. After finishing installation, Cent OS will read information from this file to do some tasks.I think I should modify initrd.img in Cent OS DVD but can not because this file is in binary (compiled file) .
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed Ubuntu lots of times on my UEFI computer without any troubles. The last few days, I've been trying to install Debian Jessie on my computer. I do the steps bellow:
- Download the corresponding iso (amd64).
- Create a UEFI bootable USB drive with Rufus.
- With Safe boot, Fast boot and CSM disabled, I boot to the USB drive.
I expect to see something like this:
But what I get is this:
I'm using an Asus PC. GL550JK. The UEFI version is 205 (from Asus Support website).
Things I've tried:
- Booting with CSM on => Same behaviour. It's not my intention to install debian with CSM on, though.
- Using Wheezy instead of Jessi => Same behaviour.
I tried to boot the net installer (debian-504-amd64-netinst.iso) from a flash drive (installed with dd). When I tried to boot that, my BIOS skipped the flash drive, which I had set the flash drive as the first boot device. So, I put it on a CDRW, and got the same result. I also tried the offline installer (debian-504-amd64-CD-1.iso) using both of those methods, with the same results. I verified the MD5SUM of this download. I am installing on a computer with a 64 bit Pentium 4 Prescott, if it matters. I have no other working OS on the computer. What other options do I have? Or am I doing something wrong?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with my debian installation; I am using the debian testing / wheezy weekly build CD, and despite using the full 650MB CD, and checking the CD to see that X, gnome, etc is all on there, it seems to insist on just downloading every single package from the internet - the CD doesn't even spin up during the 'select and install software' stage
This wouldn't be that much of a problem, except whenever I choose to use the graphical environment, it downloads all the packages, installs half and then says 'an installation step failed'!. And as it has to download the full set of packages from the net (rather than the CD) it gets a bit tiresome waiting 2+ hours for all the packages to download (I have fast internet, but the debian server doesn't feed data that fast).
And, the reason I am installing the graphical environment is that, although the installer recognises the network card, once you boot into the freshly installed system, it doesn't recognise the network card at all, and trying to bring it up just says 'eth0 not ready'!. So I want to get the graphical environment to make wireless easier to install, since the drivers for that are present, but wpa_supplicant isn't!
I'm tempted to just go and get Linux Mint Debian Edition... but I should be able to at least *install* Debian? (on a side note, I can't see what I'm doing wrong, since you can't really go wrong with the installer - it just seems to fail itself each time!).
how to make the installation faster by getting the installer to use the CD full of packages that I downloaded, rather than downloading the from the net each time, and also how to (1) find out *what* happened (the expert mode just says a step failed and that is it), and (2) to either get round it at the time, or prevent it happening somehow?. I installed Debian in 2007 on another laptop and that worked, but I then moved to Ubuntu as I wanted some newer software...... Ubuntu has been great until 11.04 which seems so full of bugs it isn't funny, so it is time to go back to Debian, if only I could get it installed!
What will be the easiest way converting Vista installer CD to iso image? I'll use the image to install VM on VirtualBox.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI had to re-install both win XP pro and Fedora 13 (dual boot) after Windows crashed so badly that I had a "read error" at boot, unrecoverable (at last for me) by running the distribution DVD in recovery mode. Now everything seems to work fine, but the software installer: it does his job resolving dependencies and downloading, but does not install. It simply stops without any message, leaving me without three programs that I badly need. yum from the console does exactly the same. we are working on a project which uses Fedora as the operating system. we are running our deliverables on up to 20+ machines of identical specifications, we have perused the whole package list (presented in the standard installer) and have a confirmed list of modules we wish to include, and we wish to know if there's anyone out there who is interested in writing a scripted installer which can be ran on the machines to perform unattended installation of F14/F15 on all the machines. a partial re-branding of the installer and boot screen would also be needed (to put it simple : adding the logo/some text of our project to existing Fedora brandings, while making sure the user will know the nice Fedora experience is embedded within in whole). please reply if you have interest in it and the know-how, and how much you wish to be reimbursed for your effort.

It's impossible because I had a partition with 15 GB of space devoted to this installation. My hard drive is 300GB,100mb for system reserved, about 50 + 214 for windows and the fourth partition is extended 35 GB. The extended 35 has 20 GB for FAT 32 and then 15 GB for the suse. And it said there is no room. pressed explore or something from the error message and then the whole computer froze. I had to reboot and the grub was ofc fcked up, nice. So, atm I am running from another live cd. When I tried to boot the openSUSE live usb the usb was ruined.. I don't know what had happened but it tried to load the live usb, it had it's cameleon ture and then error messages that said something about the usb being read only. So, do you have any ideas what might have happened, why did it say there is no room when there clearly was?

Sometimes it's while the system clock is being set, sometimes after. It's just the installer that is locked up, I can still move the cursor but because the installer is fullscreen I cannot get out of it, at least not that I know of.
I have made two different desktop CDs from two different ISOs and both gave the same exact behaviour. I think I prefer Kubuntu to Ubuntu but I haven't really been able to give it a try.
Is there a small web installer for Ubuntu server?
