Can we ask bash history to keep track of working directories too? I have tried to get an idea of this reading the enormous "man bash", but I don't seem to have an answer yet either way.

Nov 23, 2010installed Ubuntu Server Edition and I've found that my first user has a bash history and I can turn on a coloured prompt by editing my .bashrc etc but new users don't have that!I did : useradd -d /home/newb -m newbpasswd newband the correct looking .bashrc file appears to be in /home/newb but it is being ignore by bash when logged in as newb. Instead I am presented with just a dollar prompt instead of "newb@server"how can I sort out my users with proper prompts?

Apr 14, 2011I've been looking for how to set this up in bash with no luck so far. I can change what file the history log is written to, and how much history is saved. But it only writes the saved part when bash exits. Instead, I'd like to have bash write that file continuously as each command is entered (and maybe also do an fsync(2) to flush it to disk). That way I can see the command I crashed the box with Anyone know the magical incantation for that?
But there appears to be nothing that I can find there, in the man page, or other searches, that suggest it even can do continuous.

Jun 2, 2009I've been using python/bash to help myself automate things for a long time, however I am curious. One reason I use python more is because I don't quite know how to work with user input in Bash, such as getting it to ask for input and wait, and then placing that user input into a command.
Here's an example of a script I use from time to time for converting OGG video files into AVI.
How could I write this same script in Bash? Keep in mind I am mostly self taught, so I am by no means an expert programmer.

which WORKED as expected in bash 4.0.33 and now fails in 4.1.2
Instrumented the script to print the value of the left-hand side and it is exactly what is expected.
As noted above, this has been working fine until we installed Fedora 13 (kernel 2.6.33), and now it fails.
Tried setting shell 'extglob' to On with same results.
Did something change? Are there other shell/bash options that need to be set?this has the whole installation stopped!

Jun 7, 2010Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT.However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again).
I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm?

Aug 13, 2010less doesn't save command history, i.e. file .lesshst isn't created. If I create it manually, nothing writes to it too.OS AIX 5.3 I think linux users can have the same issue, hardly this issue depends on OS.

Apr 3, 2011I noticed a few days ago, that history feature is not working on my ubuntu 10.10 notebook edition terminal. I mean I enter a bunch of commands today and then shut down. Come back again tomorrow and turn on the machine and open the terminal, but up and down arrows won't bring any old commands that I used today.

How come code behaves normally and stops when ctrl+c signal is caught and resumes, but after I use at least one timeout read in the code it looks like, if signal is caught again it doesn't pause the execution but skips the loop. If you remove -t (timeout) option from the read, both loops look the same!

Jul 25, 2011I have written quite a few separate bash & scripts and php scripts that up to now I have run from cron jobs. However I have to estimate how long each takes to run, before running the next and so it probably takes much longer than necessary to run them all. They have to run in order.
Now there are so many I am thinking it would be better to have a master bash script that would run one after the other, but I am not sure how to get the master script to wait before starting to run the next script. Is this possible and is there a command that will make the script wait between bash and php scripts , for them to finish, before running the next?
