output of my results will always include a . (dot)which I dunwan it include the dot.
I want to search file excluding the NFS ...find / -mount -name 'filename' restricts the search only in the root disc partition,but the file can be in other partitions alsoIs there any way to exclude the NFS only.

I'm trying to find some files under a folder hierarchy and in case of errors moving these files to a destination folder under the same hierarchy recreating this hierarchy if not exists.
Finding all ._* files under /src and moving them to /dest recreating folder1 or the others which contains ._* files but without moving files which does not correspond to the pattern.

I need a command to search for any file in a directory like so:
/home/*/upload/* and then change permissions any file in that directory.
Find doesn't seem to match what I need.
Trying to find a way to have the find command perform a search using multiple file extensions such as "find all pics" i.e. .jpg, .png, .gif, .raw etc. I would have thought something like the following would have worked, but apparently I'm doing something wrong:
sudo find / -type f -iname "*.jpg" "*.png" "*.gif" -printf
I'm guessing find simply doesn't support more than one "-name/-iname" at a time? Or perhaps I'm going about this the wrong way? I realize most times there's several different ways to skin a cat when a task is requested in linux/unix.
I wanted to find and replace a string from a perl file. I have written a script in bash which runs the following command.
perl -pi -e "s/$findstring/$replacestring/" testfile
where as $findstring = print F_WC_TMP"$line
";
and $replaceString = $line = join ' ', split ' ', $line; print F_WC_TMP"$line
";
But when I am running the above command, i think it is replacing the $findstring with the above mentioned string and hence it contains a $line, it is looking for the variable $line and not finding the exact string. I am confused about how to search for a string that contains $ in it and replace it with another $string.
I can't search file in another folder other than the home folder. Like when I try to search in my mounted NTFS drive, it only shows and only searches my home folder, not the current open folder in mounted drive. I also have installed "Beagle Search" to index my data and reduce time searching,
View 2 Replies View RelatedAny solution using awk/sed/regexp or other standard linux utility (this is for a mix of RH versions)? I am dealing with some very large application log files. I want to see everything that has been written to the log since the last application restart.
For an example take a log file like this:

The following command is close to what I want:

But the awk command grabs the first restart not the last. If it was working the way I wanted I would see something like this:

5 restart 2

So, I need something in that search pattern that says look for the last occurrence. I know how to do this with a pipe line - I could reverse the file and then do a similar awk and reverse back, or I could find the number associated with the last restart and then use that in the awk search. But these just take too long because the file is too big.
I'm writing a script that edits a Maya ascii file. Inside the .MA(maya ascii file) there is a line defaultRenderGlobals. My script is supposed to find this line and according to what options they manipulate will update the lines below defaultRenderGlobals. I've got that working... but... the issue i'm having is that defaultRenderGlobals is only made when a the maya scene is made into a batch render. I want my script to manually addefaultRenderGlobals line into the .ma file if its not there and add the certain lines below it.RenderGlobals is already there I want to just manipulate whats below it. After that I will need to compare that IP to whatismyip and if it's different then replace it but that is easy to do with sed. I just can't figure this simple hurdle out.

We make everyday a DB Mysql backup on Linux redhat Enterprise. We are using a bash shell script (and putting it in the crontab) to execute it automatically everyday. We added a line to this script telling, once the backup has completed, to find old backup files (stored on hard disk after each backup) older than x days to remove them. We use the find command (search for file type) with the mtime option and in combination with rm command. Everything runs ok but we also want to add some new code to the same line: If find command cannot find anything or fails, for example if it cannot delete file or fails, send the error message (standard error output) to an error file (like error000001 and increasing) and mail the errorxxxx file to an email address for example to admin@companyname.com. What would be the code for this issue to add it to our find command in the same bash shell script??

I need to search a bunch of files in a specific folder for a specific number and add all the numbers together to a total sum. I use Rsync everyday, everytime I run rsync i get a logfile (rsync output) witch contains the textstring "Total bytes sent: xxxxxx".
The "xxxxx" can vary in lenght. I need to extract the "xxxxxx" from each file and add the numbers together to a total size over a week or a month. Is this possible? And I wish to only use bash. One way of doing stuff at a time my friends .

Im trying to read a file in c++ and search for particular character for example if this is a list that I have:

if the input is D, it should give David, if its B, gives bob. so in this case, meaning it reads the first character of every line. but if possible I want to make this dynamic so the user can specify which character position he is looking for, so in case he is looking for R as character index 3 in all lines, it should give Charlie. but the problem is, it does now recognize , besides, I do not know how to specify the character position in each line.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI been using linux for a while, but I havent had the time to really learn it. Something Id like to get more familiar with is bash so here is a simple example of something I would like to do:
I have a directory full of files. For each file in the directory create a new subdirectory with each files name.
I tried this:
#im already in this directory
aaa=./*
for a in $aaa
do mkdir $a
done
One of the problems is that there are spaces () and - in the filenames so I get many subfolders with names like "-" which i don't want.
I tried stuff like:
aaa=./*
for a in $aaa
do mkdir "'"$a"'"
done
This of course also did not work.
Additional I tried just creating a folder with the name of one of the files and I got this:
mkdir: cannot create directory `(audio) - R56339.EXE': File exists
Well yeah a file exsists with that name, but I want to create a folder- why is there a conflict?

We're migrating from Tomcat on Linux to Glassfish on Windows and I'm trying to make it easier to find the servlets that we don't currently have implicitly mapped in the Tomcat web.xml files for contexts. What I've done is copy all our contexts to a temp directory and written a script so that I can loop through each context, find the files that are not mapped inside a package then check if the java file is a servlet or not. From there I store each java file that matches, strip off the extension and then search in the context web.xml for a match then output to the screen.
The problem that I'm running into is that I know there are class files that should be returned and yet they are not being displayed. I'm not a Linux guy, so I'm just looking for a little help to see if I'm missing something obvious. I've attached the code for the script below.
