My system: Ubuntu 2.6.31. Language C, compiler: gcc I am running dynamic timer as a kernel module and my issue is that the once the timer overflows, the program finishes. On the other hand i have forced to arm the timer again because of a while loop but the timer never is started again. i am targetting a periodic timer but it runs once and thats it.

I have a server listening on incoming client connections. Once the client establishes SSL connection with the server, the server waits on read() from the client. Only Client can disconnect the connection. I want to have a timer in the server program to wait for x secs after read() and then disconnect the Client connection.

I was able to copy the iso file and tried the installation however I stubbled upon the same problem I had when I tried installing Fedora 11. The message I received was "(1) (0.048001) MP-BIOS bug:8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC (2) (0.064001) Kernel panic-not syncing:IO-APIC + timer doesn't work Book with apic debug and send a report. Then try booting with the 'no apic-option'.

When rebooting get this msg (in title). I used the live CD to get into the grub files to see if I could ad 'noacip' option. But was looking for 'menu lst' file and found none. Currently when I boot I don't get any menu list and therefore no options at the bottom. I've recently started coding in bash and I'm making a diagnostic check CD for rackmounted computers to print out to an LCD screen. So far it works but what i want it to do is, when it checks what ethernet ports are unplugged, it stays there for 30 minutes or so and proceeds through the script. I've looked up cron and that seems to be useful for making timers on permanent systems but I just want the cd to boot, do the check and then eject it and let the real OS take over and I've also tried using:

I'm trying to understand how interrupts work. Is there a way to generate timer interrupts in C. Also can we enter into the protected mode of the CPU. Does OS (specifically, linux) place any restrictions on user programs entering protected mode. If it does not, do we just have an assembly language program which changed the mode, followed by the C code... I'm just trying to understand how things work at the lowest level. So I'm trying to write few snippets to test my understanding.

We are using vmware server 1.0.10, centOS distribution 2.6.18-238.12.1.el5PAE.
We started the vmware service successfully, however, while we do ifconfig, we did not see vmnet1, and we do ifconfig vmnet1 up, we see that vmnet1:no such interface.

I have recently started PHP and mysql and so far I am loving it. I have read that the best way to learn any scripting/programming language is to read others code and get involve in a project. I am planning to develop a ticketing system for my intranet environment, meaning it will only be available to certain specific personnel to generate tickets, just like a helpdesk system. So a thought came in my mind, that, if a ticket is generated, a email should be sent to the relevant personnel pointing to that ticket. Now what I mean by this is, like if I have posted a query on LQ.org, a email notification is sent with a dynamic url pointing to my post if someone answers it. How its done? I mean is it done by PHP engine or apache?

View 7 Replies View RelatedA while ago, when I was using Maverick, Firefox started to crash randomly and led to kernel panics.
So I upgraded to Natty (clean install) and Firefox there too crashed.
Then I was getting graphics and make problems.
Today I tried to install Fedora 15. It first boots to a Live desktop that warned me that my hard drive had 65000+ bad sectors. Sixty-five thousand.
So I got a new one. A WD Scorpio Black, 750GB 7200RPM with Advanced Format.
Again I boot into Fedora 15. OK, no bad sectors. I tried to run Disk Utility Self Tests but it constantly crashed. Fedora warns you about this.
In the Live session, I opened Firefox. It also crashed just like back in Ubuntu. Then the screen flashes black and got warnings after warnings that a kernel module has crashed.
So I took out my old Maverick installation CD and first tried a Live session. However, Disk Utility told me that SMART is not supported while on Fedora, it was.
So I tried to install. But soon after that, I got a warning that the installer has crashed because a file copied to the disk did not match the file on CD. Right now I am in the Maverick Live session.
I have been searching for a solution to the following problem:
When my distro of choice updates Firefox web browser, the directory name is '/usr/lib/firefox-<version>'.
The problem here is that the directory name is dynamic by nature and doesn't allow a simple static solution, e.g.
'cp -rf /usr/local/files/bookmarks.html /usr/lib/firefox/defaults/profile'.
The same quandary applies when adding extensions, changing prefs etc.
I have looked at the following commands:-

I'm studing and making my first real life program in C++. I've got a doubt related with including a string type into a struct when I'm managing memory allocationdynamically.Bellow I copy the test program I did which works ok. Any good tutorial on sharing dynamically allocated objects across shared libraries in the same process and between shared libaries and main(). In particular, I need to know what creation and destruction sequences are valid when libraries are being loaded and unloaded. For example, is it valid to allocate an object from inside a shared library procedure, and then delete that pointer from a different module, especially in the case where the allocating module has already been unloaded.
I imagine there might be all kinds of problems with this. Although my preliminary tests seem to work most of the time, I get crashes from time to time, but I'm not sure if they're caused by memory management or by threading issues. I've been restructuring my code to use a global context object to manage object creation and destruction from main(), but I'd like to find a clear exposition of the specific issues I'm dealing with before I go too much further.

So a friend and I are new-ish to linux (I am reasonably comfortable with basic /etc text editing, command admin). We are, however, completely new to programming and (x)html. We have a few (what we think are) interesting ideas for dynamic websites.Ideally we would like to develop our own course of study to get to the point where we have a basic understanding of programming so that our adventures in the programming of a dynamic website would be possible. Much of what we need learn to do is the following: use daily updated public-domain data from several other sites, manipulate that data algorithmically, which would then yield updating output on our site. 1. learn the basics of programming with a language that would teach good code habits and fundamental understanding.
2. become comfortable with (x)html
3. learn another language for the extension of (x)html into a dynamic data-heavy website.
Question could you please suggest a way about going about 1>2>3?Ideally the language of (1) would be something that would not be "wasted" just on web design etc. As a language, C really appeals to me. I recently installed KDE in my ubuntu 10.10. To access KDE, I want to use

But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx
I doing malloc and getting the chunk of dynamic memory. Now I want it to align that memory to 64KB. This means that the address of the memory starts from 64KB or multiple of 64KB.
