Programming :: Date Formatting From Stat Command?
Jul 23, 2010
I'm writing a script that takes the date attribute of a file when it was created and appending it to the name. I'm pretty close to what I need, but the date appears in yyyy-mm-dd format and I want it to read mm-dd-yyyy. What I have done so far is something like
for ((i=1;i<=50;i++));
do fdate=`stat -c %y Video Snapshot $i.png|awk {'print$1'}`;
newname=Personname-$fdate-$i.png;
mv Video Snapshot $i.png $newname;
done
This works decently but the date comes out in the yyyy-mm-dd format. How do I change it?

I'm trying to backup every night a big directory (~2.5Gb) using tar+gzip.I'm calling tar like this:nice -n 19 tar --ignore-failed-read --exclude-tag-all=.kein-backup -Pczpsf '/backup/20100925233802f/archive.tar.gz' '/srv/products'And in 90% of the cases works just fine, in about 20 minutes is everything done. However, if it happens that in those minutes one file or folder from '/srv/products' gets deleted it reports me the following error:tar: /srv/products/prod14564.gif: Cannot stat: No such file or directorytar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errorsDoes it exist a parameter for tar to ignore this kind of errors? Is it there any other way to avoid these errors

I would like to change the formatting on my BASH prompt from this:
anon@machinename.domain.poo:~/some/very/annoying/long/path$
to something like this:
anon@machinename.domain.poo:~/some/very/annoying/long/path
$
The idea is that I would be able to type a reasonably long command on one line without it wrapping to the next line so quickly.

As I recent convert from Ubuntu to Centos, I have a lot to learn. In Ubuntu, I can plug in a memory stick, run the menu option: System/Adminstration/Partition Manager, highlight the memory stick and choose "Format: Encrypt"
In Centos, my memory stick is /dev/sdc1, how do I, using command line: format it as /ext3, encrypt it using cryptsetup, and set a password?

I would really like to preserve a file's original modified date and pass it back to the file as the same attribute after a script has worked on it. I get a lot of JPEG files from different places on the Net which I either turn around and upload or burn to disk, and having the "original" date of either download or last mod in a graphics app would be for me, in the long run, a lot more helpful when deciding, for instance, which files to "recycle" or pass on backing up more than once.I've tried doing this on my own every now and then. Where I run into problems is that it appears "stat" and "date" use different formats for date information, and I can't seem to puzzle out how to "translate" one to the other satisfactorily for the latter command.
Just to give an example:
stat foo.jpg |grep Modify gives me
Modify: 2010-07-12 06:28:56.890625000 -0400
Passing that string as-is to date foo.jpg, I get the errordate: unknown option -- 0 and the usual semi-courteous suggestion to Try 'date --help' for more information.Somehow my TexInfo database got screwed up somewhere along the line and info dategives me the short article on date input formats, not the full documentation for the command

I'd like to know if it's possible in my program (C/C++) to create a filesystem on a partition, maybe with advanced options too. I don't want to call the shell and execute the usual commands to do that, so I wonder if there are some native Linux syscalls or external libraries to do that.

I wrote an expect script that tests user authentication against a RADIUS server. The username is an email address, including an @ sign. I recently wrote an HTML/PHP front end to allow others to input username/password into a form and then see the results when they hit submit. Expect code that takes two args username, and password
Code:
expect "#"
send "test aaa group radius [lindex $argv 0] [lindex $argv 1] new-code
"expect "#"
[code]....
Every works as it's supposed to, except for the output of the script. When it displays on the webpage, it's segmented weirdly with all throughout. What I've found is when I remove the @ sign in the username input, it fixes it. Is there any part of HTML or PHP that treats the @ as a special character? 1 more thing is that I have another HTML/PHP/EXP script that works fine with the @.

I need to extract som text from a text file. The text is a test log with system info at the top and results further down. What I need is to add different tags with formatting before and after each line. I have prepared a template with html formatting, but the number of lines in the test log may be different from case to case, so I need to be able to add formatting tags by need. Can this be done using bash script, sed, awk, head, tail... ?

I am doing some NSCA log parsing and I want to get an output like this:
2011-Feb-18:11:00:07
2011-Feb-18:11:00:07
2011-Feb-18:11:00:07
2011-Feb-18:11:00:08
2011-Feb-18:11:00:08
[Code]....
I have tried this, but it treats the entire output as a single line, then plops a timestamp on the end (I think):
Code:
sort -b -k4.9,4.12 -k4.5b,4.7Mb -k4.2,4.3 -k4.14,4 foo.log| date -j -f "%Y-%b-%d:%T" "+%s" "`awk -F '[ [/:]' '{print $7"-"$6"-"$5":"$8":"$9":"$10}'`"

I am trying to use the date command in a simple bash script as below:
#!/bin/sh
this_date=`date`
echo "The date is $this_date"
This script seems to work only if a surround the command with the `` characters, which I copied from another script. Can anyone tell me why this is, and how I can insert these characters from my keyboard,which only has normal quote and double-quote characters?

Say I have a line like such:
Code:
today 2010 Feb 21 test10, 12AM
How would I print everything AFTER "2010 Feb 21 "?
What I thought to do so far is to set a variable to the format used in the string like so:
Code:
date="$(date +%Y %b %e)"
So I know I have to use either awk, sed, or perhaps bash substrings to work with the variable $date, but as to how, I'm drawing a blank.
