Sep 28, 2010I have very little linux experience. And need some help with a bash script. I need to a script I can set cron to run to sort files out of a holding folder into final folders. It doesn't necessarily have to be bash, but I think it would be sufficient for this. File names are formatted as such when created: Dest-Date-Time-CID-Destination# I want the files to be moved from a all in one holding folder to a folder structure like this.
.../storage/year/month/day/Destination#/VarX(type)/hour/CID/'File'
I would need an if/else if/else statement to say if Dest = A set VarX = B If for example the file name was
infinity-20100927-17:00-1112223333-4445556666.wav
I would like the above file to end up moved from
.../holding
to
.../storage/2010/09/27/4445556666/Inbound/17/1112223333/infinity-20100927-17:00-1112223333-4445556666.wav
So the script will need to make directories based on information in the file name which is delimited by single dashes. Then move files from the holding folder to the newly created "sorted" folders.

Feb 20, 2010I have created a file using open() and written data to it. Data appears as normal characters in the file. How to save these characters in a binary format in that file using C language? Here I mean that the characters should be actually stored as 0 and 1. Do I have to convert the whole data using some function or there is some standard way to do it in Linux?

Feb 5, 2010We have a custom app that runs on boot on some older hardware running DSL linux, and their startup manager was quite simple. We purchased some newer Asus eeebox's which run xandros and things are quite stable and run nice with 1 exception.The application only runs from the root (/) location. This box auto logs in as 'user' and there is a /home/user/.kde/Autostart folder where you can stick scripts to run at boot. So I have a start.sh script, and with little bash programming tried things such as;
sudo cd /
sudo /startapp.pl
but the errors start spewing with the basic;can't find data/xyz as it's looking in the local.I thought there was a basic cwd (change working directory) but everything I try just forces the run from that location.Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated, but things like can you change the code, etc. can't be done, so it must be a programming thing. The only other thought I had but not sure, can you do a cronjob with @boot or something, that when the box starts, it can run this job as root and fire off?

Oct 23, 2010So I have created a Bash script with the intent of the program to change the names of the files in a folder's subdirectory.The code recognises the individual subdirectories, then is able to enter into one and list the files individually, but when it tries to change their information it says;' cannot stat ' : ' No such file or directory 'As if it is looking in the directory that contains the Bash script, not its subdirectory.It is essentially saying, I see a file here called FILE but sorry, I can't change FILE because FILE doesn't exist. kweh?Is this something outside the capabilities of Bash? Am I asking too much of it? Can Bash only manipulate files that are in the same folder as the script?

Feb 19, 2011I was wondering, what would be a good, open-source file format for a beginner in the field, like me, to start editing sound files? This file format would have to be well documented, preferibly open-source, lossless and, most of all, convertible to more popular file formats, such as mp3 or wav maybe. I would like to design my own sound effects through directly editing the binary sequence of a sound file. I imagine this editing would have the purpose of adjusting the voltage variations of the sound device's output in time. It would be perhaps something like a PC-controlled signal generator. I'm thinking I might be able to do this in linux with something like

The libidata.so.42 is there in that folder. I guess the file might be in a big endian. Is there a way to check if the libidata.so.42 i have might be a big endian format, rather than little endian?
If my guess is incorrect, This is a c++ code on fedora x86 machine.
General :: Change File Time Stamp (Bash Script)?
Jan 6, 2010I need some help recovering from a "slight" screwup. We just moved 3 TB of data from one RAID Array to another. Low lever archive files. This was done with a regular cp (for some reason) and now we have lost all the timestamps on the files, and we urgently need to get the timestamps back on these files.
We are running Ubuntu 9.10 Server and we have mounted the following
1. /mnt/old-raid ##Old raid from the old server
2. /mnt/new-raid ##New raid on the server
I know we can read out the timestamp on the old server using the command stat -c '%Y' <<filname>>
I know we can change the timestamp of the file, using the command touch -d '<<date>>'
To get from the stat -c date to the input date in touch we need to use date -d @<<timestamp>> +'%d %b %Y %R'
So my question is, how can I create a loop that will list all files in a folder, get their timestamp and update the old timestamp with the new?

Actually I have two data files one of them contains 44406 and the other one has 12066 rows and I want to check whether the difference between the components of two specific columns is less than a threshod but I have simplified it here. I had written this code and then I have realized that this code just goes through the number of rows as the same as the first.txt file and ignores the rest. I could not find the problem yet.

There is an access log file, `access.log`. My question is what configuration file determines the location and the name of the access log file. How can I change them? I used CustomLog in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf like below.LogFormat ": %h %l %u %t "%r" %>s %b" common
CustomLog /home/test/my_log_file common Apache2 generated /home/test/my_log_file. But no logs were written in the file even after I run `/etc/init.d/apache2 restart`. Ichanged the log file location. It still didn't work. However, Apache2 still wrote logs in the file `/var/log/apache2/access.log`
