I want to calculate log in bash script. I searched but could not find any bash command to directly do it. I am also thinking to send the variable in C program, calculate in C and get the answer back in bash script.But I think it is a long process. as I have to do this
i) gcc -o log log.c
ii) ./log > log_result.txt
iii) then read the result from log_result.txt

Using awk I pull the first field of a random line from my datafile.myvar1=`awk -F" " 'NR=='$randline' {printf "%s", $1}' myfileThis works fine. The problem is there will be empty lines at the end of the file. Rather than using awkto filter out blank lines I would like to figure this out first.So I test $myvar1 for a blank string after setting $randline to one that I know is blank:test -z "$myvar1" && echo "true" || echo "false"But, this returns "false"? So the string is not zero length. Why? It's a tab-separated file. Is awk storing the tab with the $1 field or something.This is where I get headache. I try to echo my variable to see what it looks like.
echo "$myvar1"
outputs: nothing
echo "My variable is [$myvar1]"
outputs: [y variable is [
Why is the closing bracket at the beginning? What character could be stored in $myvar1 that would do such a thing and how did it get there?

I'm trying to search through some pdf files and I'm doing so by converting them to text files using pdftotext which is fine but I'm trying to get the number of occurrences in a paragraph of different words and it's adding a new line character at what it thinks is the right hand margin. I'm trying to remove all these singe new line characters but keep the doubles and I can't seem to work it out. i.e.
This is some text that has been broken.
Another paragraph.
becomes
This is some text that has been broken.
Another paragraph

So I need to write a bash script that can read lines and column 3 from a file. It needs to start on line 16 and read every 20th line starting from there. But the value that it reads needs to be checked, should it be too great I need it to shut the program down.I'm pretty new to bash, but my ultimate goal is being able to safely run a program on a GPU for an extended period of time with out worrying about it overheating. I have a command that outputs information from the GPU every second, and I can save this to a file. So all I really need is something to read and check that file, I played around a bit with the awk command and can't get it to work within my for loop with dynamic variable.

For example, I have a text file with data which lists numerical values from two separate individuals
Code:
Person A
100
200
300
400
500
600
700
800
900
1000
1100
1200
Person B
1200
1100
1000
900
800
700
600
500
400
300
200
100
How would I go about reading the values for each Person, then being able to perform mathematical equations for each Person (finding the sum for example)?

I would like to parse an input file in which there are two columns per each row. We want to see how many lines are duplicated where we define duplicate to be having the same second field and different first field. For instance if the input file looks like the following:

79873 12309
79820 13131

does anyone know how to calculate an average in a simple way with bash? I've got something like this:
Code:
$ cat results.txt | head -10 | tr " " " " | cut -f13
0.23929285124
0.404716908011
0.35113102608
[Code]....
and now I want to calculate the average of the resulting numbers. I know I could write a bash or awk or perl script and use that, but isn't there a more simple, elegant way? There is for example "sum" in the coreutils, but no "avg"..

i am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline
Code:
variable=$(cat file.txt)
The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:
Code:
for line in $variable
do
echo $line
# Other commands
done
how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0

I want to calculate length of my array, say Unix here.
Code:
[linux1@HMLINUX1 abc]$ declare -a Unix=('Debian' 'Red Hat' 'Suse' 'Fedora');
[linux1@HMLINUX1 abc]$
[linux1@HMLINUX1 abc]$ echo ${#Unix[@]}
5
This should be ideally 4, but somehow it is showing as 5. However, when I am removing the space as RedHat instead of Red Hat, it is working perfectly.
Code:
[linux1@HMLINUX1 abc]$ declare -a Unix=('Debian' 'Redhat' 'Suse' 'Fedora');
[linux1@HMLINUX1 abc]$ echo ${#names[@]}
4

I'm using pyqt3 for my app and am lost on even how to attempt this task... On a vinyl cutter to have the blade pivot it must be offset from the center of the shaft it's on so say for example a .25mm offset would leave a .25mm unwanted vinyl attachment when the cutting is done. I somehow have to average or extrapolate that .25mm xy coordinate and add it to the hpgl plot file as a PUx,y; command? I have enclosed a simple sample file that has three images in it. In the corresponding hpgl file everything between the PU commands that are starting with PD are the code for that image (star for eg the pu to move to next image and then all PD for the next image and so on, so once the formula or procedure is figured out it can be applied to as many images there are in the file. Placing the new command at the head of each image PD group. Since there are absolute and relative cutters I enclosed the same exact plot for both types as the coordinates on relative can be negative numbers. Only PU and PD commands and a ";" as a command delimiter as sometimes many commands are on one line.The offset variable will come from a spinbox but .25 is good for an example.

Im doing a sudoku-solver as a school assigment in Java. It is supposed to solve both 6x6, 9x9 and 12x12 boards.Im pretty much done with my algorithm(brute force), but I'm having a hard time figuring out how to calculate the right Box for a Square. I found this snippet:
Code:
// calculate BoardPos for index, where index is 0..80
void loadBoardPosFromIndex(BoardPos &pos, int index) {
pos.index = index;
[code]...
This works on 9x9 boards, but I really dont get the math behind this, and how I can create a generic rule for both 6x6, 9x9 and 12x12 boards.

I am trying to write a script to calculate the total amount of installed memory to use during an anaconda kickscript, so the swap file is created at 2 x the installed memory. I so far have the amount of installed RAM DIMMS but need a way to total them up and produce a varible I can use in the pre section of the install.
Code:
dmidecode -t 17 | grep Size | awk ' { print $2 }'
Output:
2048
2048
Note: on some servers there could be from 1 DIMM up to 16 DIMMS installed so the script needs to be able to handle this. I also can not use bc as it does not exist during the install stage. I am guessing I need a while loop to do this and use expr but do not know where to start for this logic.

I'm trying to write a bash script to find all lines containing two different strings in many files. I don't have access to egrep so I want to use sed for this purpose.
The files will look like this:
FileX
------
Info:18
Data:76
Contact:me@home.com
Start:1500
I want to generate a new file from these files with only the rows containing Data and Start. Something like this:
for y in `ls /file*.db`;
do sed '/Data|Start/p' $y > newfile
done
