Programming :: Processing A Command Line Literally (without Shell Quoting)

Aug 31, 2010

Does anyone know a method of being able to process the complete and literal command line passed to a shell script ? I want to have the command line parameters with ALL characters (including meta characters e.g. $ literally).

So as if there was no shell to substitute or expand parameters nor applying it quoting rules.

Programming :: Gawk Getline Eats Next Line For Processing?

Mar 19, 2011

I'm working on a simple data processing script.My script uses a loop with getline to check for the value on the next line to decide if it's time to terminate the loop.This works dandy, but the problem is that getline eats that line, which then isn't processed by the rules in the remainder of the script (even though I want it to be). To illustrate what I mean, consider this simple gawk script:

Code:

CentOS 5 :: Pass Shell As Command Line Argument When I Ssh To An Account

Jan 25, 2011

I want to have a choice or more preferable pass shell as command line argument when I ssh to an linux account.i.e. If John logs in to account "zzz" on server "abc", by default definition of account "zzz" n server "abc" he get csh.But Sally desires that when she logs in to account "zzz" on server "abc", she needs the login shell to be ksh,and Rick wants bash when he logs in to account "zzz" on server "abc".What is the most non-intrusive / easiest way to achieve this? Each user can set their preference on ssh command line or create a simple alias by each shell, but not sure how to do this.

Fedora Installation :: Boot - Grub Drops Into Its Minimal Shell And Gives A Command Line

Jun 12, 2009

I'd like to say I'm very impressed with Fedora 11. I'm a long time Linux user and I've tried many distros. But, I usually keep only the best on my laptop. For a long time that was Ubuntu but, I think Fedora 11 has made some key improvements over Ubuntu and I'm eager to switch. The problem is: I haven't been able to run Fedora as anything other than on the Live CD. Everything works perfectly and it installs but, when I reboot, Grub begins. Instead of booting, however, Grub drops into its minimal shell and gives me a command line.

I've tried installing it a number of ways now and have read much about the problems with Ext4 on Grub and took special care to see that Grub has its own, separate, /boot ext3 partition. Even then, no luck. My hardware should work fine. I've got an HP DV-5 with 4GB RAM, AMD Turion 64-bit dual-core @ 2 Ghz, and an IDE 250GB hard drive. I'm working with the 64-bit Fedora 11 Live disc with KDE as the Gui.

Programming :: Command Line Invocation Of Gnome-terminal To Run More Than One Command?

Feb 16, 2010

I am trying to learn how to pass more than a one-command startup for gnome-terminal.

I will give an example of what I'm trying to do here:

Code:
#! /bin/bash
#
#TODO write this for gnome and xterm
USAGE="
${0##*/} [-x] [-g]
code....

However, running with the -g option to invoke gnome-terminal, I get a "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal" error.

This same error occurs if the gnome-terminal line is changed to

Code:
gnome-terminal -e mcTerm

Is there any way to pass more than one command on to gnome-terminal? I have tried various single and double quoting senarios and in a final attempt, I abstracted to an exported function all to no avail. Perhaps even though gnome-term is better at many things than xterm, xterm trumps it in this instance.

Programming :: Replace Character With Hex Value Choosing From Shell Cmd Line?

Jun 9, 2011

I am bouncing a file across platforms (windows->solaris->mainframe), and the file is starting out with a "special" character (the registered trademark "circle R") in some of the records. This character is not in the EBCDIC character set on the MF, so it is unrecognizable. The MF developer I am working with asked if it is possible to replace the character with a specific hex value (AF) before it gets to the MF.

I was putzing around with sed, tr, etc. on the ksh command line, hoping to find an easy way to get one of them to substitute hex instead of ASCII. I have found that the usual shell utilities recognize the trademark character, so homing in on what to replace is solved. But I cannot get anything to actually substitute in the hex sequence I want. E.g. I was thinking something like...

>cat special_file | sed 's/R/AF/g'

But my version of sed does not seem to have hex "editing" capability.

Programming :: Shell Script To Delete Part Text Of A Line If Pattern Matches?

Apr 12, 2010

I am trying to create a shell script, on taking a input file as parameter, which need to do 3 things

1) create a copy of existing file.

2) add a new line to the copied file.

3) strip off all the absolute paths inside the copied file

The first 2 points are straight forward. but i am finding it difficult to acheive the 3rd point. myself not very good with awk and sed. but gave it a shot in vain. For example, the input script consists of below,

PROGRAM=`/usr/bin/basename $0`
HOST=`/usr/bin/uname -n`
echo Start $PROGRAM `/usr/bin/date` |
/usr/bin/tee -a $LOG

The output of the script should look like,

PROGRAM=`basename $0`
HOST=`uname -n`
echo Start $PROGRAM `date` |
tee -a $LOG

Programming :: Executing Shell Command In JSP

what we are trying to do is, to let the customer click a button in the web browser, and then the web server to call a shell script to do the work. The output from the stdout && stderr of the script should be displayed in the web browser once finished or timeout, along with the exit code of the script.

The shell script is however not on the web server, but on another app server. So to call this script from the web server as the identity 'tomcat':

Code:
$ sh appuser@app-server:$appbin/app-script

The .ssh/id_rsa.pub thing is done, and we have no problem doing this in the command line so far.

Our loaded ex-colleage has left us the webpages (jsp) with code like these:

Code:
<%@ include file="jsp_functions.jsp" %>

String cmd = "sh $appbin/app-script";
ExecResult r = new ExecResult();
