Programming :: Detect A Closed Tcp Client Connection When Client Is Only Receiving Data ?
Mar 9, 2011I am writing a TCP server in C, and the server listens to incoming client connections and accepts them. It then creates a thread to handle the client. The clients are expected to only receive data from my server and not send any data. So if I use a select() call with a recv(), I believe that the recv() will just block forever since there will not be any data coming from the client. If I use a non-blocking recv(), then this will just return a 0 which tells me nothing because the client is not expected to send any data. I am not sure if I have misunderstood some socket concepts, but I need a solution to detect when the client has disconnected so that I can close the socket and stop sending data to the client. As I understand it, simple ACKs etc are not captured by the recv(), and only data sent by the client will cause recv() to return a non-zero value, so I am not sure how to know when the client has disconnected.

Aug 6, 2010Reading some examples on net and copying some codes I was able to build a (frankstein) server that accept connection from one client and receive and send messages to it. The big problem that shows up is that I don't know when client disconnects from my server.
I've been looking for a solution, but no success. I'd read about SO_KEEPALIVE option (which could solve my problem), but I don't know how to use it (how to check the value of it).
I can't use ping because the server (machine) could be running, but not the client (software).
Anyone knows a good tutorial or how to (for beginners like me xD) of TcpIp sockets using c/c++ and how to detect when a client disconnect?
I don't know sockets very well.

But when it comes to IE it simply wont load the player.

Mar 8, 2011iam just trying to connect to server which accepts one client and server will read(blocking operation) infinitely, but After closing the client socket the server "read operation" is returning zero and "errno variable(in errno.h)" value is also zero. how can i detect whether a client socket is closed/active..?

Fedora X86/64bit :: FC11 And Firefox 3.5 Beta 4 Wont Detect System Proxy?
Jun 16, 2009Ive installed fc11 on my laptop (IBM lenovo R400). My work has a proxy which we must go through. I have set the proxy addresses in System Settings->Network Settings-> proxy. I have also run export [URL].. All seems to be ok, yum works from the command line, konquer goes out to the net just fine. However firefox wont connect to the internet no matter. The only way at the moment is to manually set the proxy in firefox.This doesnt seem right? Surely FF should pick up the system proxy? Does anyone have any ideas about this one?

Nov 18, 2010I've been attempting to figure this out for about 4 days straight, so far it has not been fruitful. I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 server onto my former gaming system, Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E8400 @ 3.00GHz, 2 cores with 2 GB ram. Overkill I'm sure, especially for a simple personal voip, htpc, storage server.
The problem is only noticeable when I have the vent server running, on the 10.04 server, and I attempt to connect to it through the LAN via the client on my windows computerEverything works fine and connects, LAN and from the outside, as long as the server is set to DHCP. However when attempting to switch to a static IP address, the vent client will not detect the vent server at all.Aside from an annoyance at having to stick with DHCP, I am still curious as to why the static settings will not function. Something so simple has turned into something quite difficult.
I can still connect to the Webmin interface and Putty into server with either DHCP or static IP enabled.I've performed the following troubleshooting steps so far:1) Followed the directions at https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/serverg...iguration.html2) Edited the /etc/network/interfaces file through the CLI with nano and through notepad on the windows computer3) Through Webmin I've assigned the static IP, although for some reason it does not include a gateway field.4) I've rebooted the server5) I've issued the CLI

Only Client can disconnect the connection. I want to have a timer in the server program to wait for x secs after read() and then disconnect the Client connection.

Oct 4, 2010I've tried to read many of the topics in this forum first and tried to find a solution to my problem, but can't find one.I'm testing CentOS 5.5, it's the first time I'm using a CentOS Linux release.I'm trying to configure the proxy "client side " on it and cannot find how to do it.On other Linux release I've used the ENV variable like "http_proxy" or "HTTP_PROXY" etc etc.This time, I don't know why but it doesn't work.I've put the name and @ip of the proxy in /etc/hosts and tried different version upper/lowercase of "http_proxy" "HTTP_proxy" "ftp_pr.." but it doesn't work.If I configure manually Firefox and puting the name or @ip of the proxy we have on our network, it works.But if I try to use ENV variable it doesn't work...

So the user must input "<name>, <interest>" with the ", " (comma and space) but even if you respect the syntax the compiler will skip to the else condition. I don't know why, but if I put any other condition like ",s" it will work, but not with spaces.

Currently I just compress them and compare the old length to the new length. If the new length is smaller it copies the compressed data into the original datas memory space.The problem I have is when lots of these blocks of memory do not compress well its huge amounts of wasted CPU.

Jul 8, 2010I was playing with the mysql my.cnf file yesterday, trying to move my database files to my dropbox folder so I can use the database on my other machine. All I changed was the datadir setting to point to my dropbox folder. I also moved my mysql data files there.
When I tried to restart mysql and test the new location it said my mysqld.sock was missing. I searched and searched the web and my filing system for it but I have no idea what's happened to it?? I have even tried changing the datadir path back and reinstalling mysql but that doesn't seem to work either.

Oct 21, 2010I'm witting a piece of code that needs to read key presses. However I cannot use them as stream, but rather need discrete reads. The code is to simulate an io board interface. So When I press say "d" I need to read it in instantly, not wait for return. I've tried sdl, but no luck (I'm reading in a thread and it causes some problems) I'm using linux so can't use conio.h functions, I've tired gatch from cureses but this still waits for return.So in C/c++ is there a way I can read instant key presses.
