I have installed CentOS 5.6 guest in vmware. This machine has host-only networking. I would like to install vmware-tools, which requires that gcc be installed. (As vmware tools is not yet configured, I cannot copy paste the error. So I am typing it out). As gcc has dependancies, I thought of configuring a local yum repository via http. http is already up and running fine.These are the steps I did:
I mounted the iso as loopback in /mnt/cdrom.
cd /var/www/html
mkdir -p yum/base-pkg
/var/www/html/yum/base-pkg is where all the rpm's going to be served via http will be present. I am changing the ownership of /var/www/html/yum/base-pkg to apache:apache, though not sure if this step is required.
chown -R apache:apache /var/www/html/yum/base-pkg
Now, cd /mnt/cdrom
ls CentOS | wc -l
shows 2684
I am copying these 2684 packages as follows:
cp -avr CentOS/* /var/www/html/yum/base-pkg
I am also copying the directory "repodata" as follows:
cp -R repodata/* /var/www/html/yum/base-pkg
Now, cd /etc/yum.repos.d
ls shows the following files:
CentOS-Base.repo
CentOS-Debuginfo.repo
CentOS-Media.repo
CentOS-Vault.repo
I am renaming the .repo directories to something else. I hope this will ensure that yum will not look into the default repositories, rather will look only into my custom repository file.
for i in $(ls); do mv $i $i.org; done
Now I am creating my repository file named mylocal.repo (in /etc/yum.repos.d)
touch mylocal.repo
vi mylocal.repo
[base-local]
name=Centos $releasever - $basearch
[code].....

I am unable to start my xserver, using the startx command that I have been using for the past 5 years. It goes to the blue loading screen with the x for a cursor, hangs there for about a min or so then goes back to the command screen. I get an error:

I'm using gmake (v3.81) to build some c executables. As the first step in the process I run the files through a preprocessor (for embedded SQL). The preprocessor completes successfully, but the gmake reports an error and discontinues buiding the remaining dependencies...
make *** [myfile.c] Error 4
which (according to /usr/include/asm-generic/errno-base.h) means "interrupted System Call". My preprocessor doesn't raise any signals, so I'm not sure what's causing this error.

I've been around the block with this problem and don't know what else to check to compile source for gpsbabel-1.4.2. Other posts on this forum mentioning the same error with no resolution on this specifically. I have looked at the following:
1. The Makefile looks like this for the part compiling with expat options:
Code:
gpsbabel$(EXEEXT): configure Makefile $(OBJS)
$(CC) $(CFLAGS) $(LDFLAGS) $(OBJS) -lm -L/lib -lexpat -L/usr/lib -lusb $(OUTPUT_SWITCH)$@
2.Search for library files:
Code:
$find /usr/lib -type f -name "*expat*" -print
/lib/libexpat.so.1.5.2
/lib/libexpatw.so.1.5.2

I'm trying to install the latest Kmess from source, but when configuring it (it's really a wrapper for cmake) I get the following error: configuring KMess 2.0.6.1
checking build directory
running cmake from /usr/src/kmess-2.0.6.1/build
command: cmake -D CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr
-D CMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=relwithdebinfo
-D KMESS_DEBUG_OUTPUT=0
[Code]...
fix the problems mentioned above, and run ./configure again. For example, make sure you have the KDE 4 devel packages installed.I've done this yesterday on another computer and it worked fine once I had both libgif4 and libgif-dev installed. The problem is that I've got both of those packages installed on this computer and I still get the error.

I am on my Debian system right now because of issues after compiling Linux 2.6.35, I followed Alien Bob's tutotorial, but obviously I missed something. I added 2.6.35 to my lilo.conf file, I tried to boot to it, but dhcp wasn't working, then I tried a startx and KDE would not load. No problem right, I will just boot my original Slackware Linux kernel.
I booted to the original, DHCP worked great but when I do a startx, I just get a black screen. Here is some of the terminal output.
Code:
No protocol specified
waiting for X server to begin accepting connections.
No protocol specified
[code]....
It's hard to get some of the output because I am looking at the other screen and typing this.

I am trying to cross-compile my Qt application for armhf on Jessie, so what I did was install qt5-default:armhf, but when I tried running qmake I found out that it contains also an armhf version of qmake so I was not able to run it.Then I installed the amd64 version to have at least a runnable version of qmake, but it was only to find out that qmake contains only hardcoded paths, so I could not use it for the armhf libraries, well I could but I had to run qmake (amd64 version) and afterwards open the makefile and change all paths from amd64 to armhf.
But as this is not so convenient I was wondering if there is a normal way to do this, I know you can compile the source yourself but I had quite a lot of problems with dependencies there. Is it possible with the standard repository binaries or should I just go back to compiling the source myself? Maybe I can compile only the building tools without building all the libraries I already got from the repository.

I'm trying to learn how to cross-compile libraries (static and shared) and executables for the Blackfin + uClinux environment.At this point, I can successfully compile a stand-alone "Hello, world" but fail when trying to add a (static) library to the mix.Here's the source code I wrote:
Code:
#========== bar.h
void mytestfunc(void);
#========== bar.c
#include <stdio.h>
[code]...
Googling for this returns talks about "name mangling", but I don't know if this is what it is, and how to change the source/command to solve it.

I am trying to use the QT4 frontend of poppler library in my application so I need to compile the library.In its main directory ./configure can be run but I got
Code:
checking which font configuration to use... fontconfig
checking for FONTCONFIG... no
configure: error: Package requirements (fontconfig >= 2.0.0) were not met:
No package 'fontconfig' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix. Alternatively, you may set the environment variables FONTCONFIG_CFLAGS
and FONTCONFIG_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config.See the pkg-config man page for more details.
I have fontconfig installed (ubuntu):
2.8.0-2.1ubuntu3 (fontconfig)
However I have no idea where those flags are and what to set them to.

I have been using gcc to compile C programs.
I want to know what exactly is the meaning of Compiling a C program.
I checked
cc -S prog.c
will give an .S file and if you analyze the hexdump I saw some assembly instructions.
So what does the compiler do which is not required in case of interpreted languages?

I did see another topic on this forum regarding VSTs in LMMS, but it didn't solve my problem. I am running using the 64-bit testing branch of debian, which may be causing some of my problems. I tried compiling LMMS myself, but I ran into an issue with wine when it tried to compile RemoteVstPlugin.
It seems as though wine didn't install winegcc or any other tools like that. After a while, I did manage to find winegcc and some of the other tools in /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/wine/bin. I decided to add some symlinks in /usr/local/bin to point to winegcc, wineg++, winecpp, and winebuild. After that, it seemed to give a different error message, but still failed to compile. It now gives me the following error:
Code: Select all[ 83%] Generating RemoteVstPlugin
/usr/bin/ld: Relocatable linking with relocations from format elf64-x86-64 (/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/wine/wine/libwinecrt0.a(exe_entry.o)) to format elf32-i386 (RemoteVstPlugin.Azfbf1.o) is not supported
winebuild: /usr/bin/ld failed with status 1
[Code] ....
I may be missing some dependencies because I couldn't run build-dep without removing skype but I don't think that's the problem. I thought the above problem may have something to do with wine, so I was going to try compiling wine to. I ran into problems with that, and ditched that idea. I really don't know what to do anymore. I can't just disable VST support, because that's why I tried to compile LMMS by myself to begin with!
