Programming :: Created Python Programs - Making Changes To Improve?
Dec 17, 2008
I have list of programs which I have created during the past few days, all the programs are attached in txt files, and if anyone can do favor, and double check if they work, and what changes I can make to make it look different, or to improve it.

I've already used line split stuff to transform my data into something like this in a text file:
Code:
['1', '1', '3', '20.7505207']
['2', '1', '3', '23.0488319']
['3', '1', '3', '-1.5768747']
['4', '1', '3', '-26.4772491']
[code]....
How can I get this on a python program so I can manipulate it as an array?

I've been using Ubuntu 9.10 fairly regularly on my home computer for a week or two now, dual-booting it with Windows 7. So far I've been quite happy with it, but yesterday something odd happened. I decided to copy all the music I had stored on the Windows partition over to the Ubuntu file system so that I could listen to it there. I have about 16 gigs of music mostly in .mp3 format, so I put the folder on an external hard drive, then logged into Ubuntu and copied it back from the external drive to my Music file.
Once the transfer was done, I opened the Music file and double-clicked on one of the .mp3s at random to play it. When I did this, a window popped up and the first half-second or so of the track played, and then the window closed and it stopped. This happened once or twice more with different .mp3s. The window didn't last long enough for me to get a good idea of what program it was for, but I assume it was Totem, which I hadn't yet run since installing Ubuntu, because according to the Properties->Open With tab of any .mp3 file, that's the default program to use to open .mp3s.
Attempting to run Totem from the Applications menu gives the same result, I later found. Attempting to run Totem from a terminal gave the following error:
andrew@Lovelace-Linux:~$ totem
** (totem:2323): WARNING **: Could not import pygtk
ImportError: No module named pygtk
Segmentation fault
Then, several other programs began having similar issues immediately after I first tried to play a .mp3 yesterday. Specifically, Rhythmbox - which I also hadn't used before, and next tried to use to play the music - will not start at all. Running it from the terminal gives:
andrew@Lovelace-Linux:~$ rhythmbox
** (rhythmbox:2338): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed
** (rhythmbox:2338): CRITICAL **: atk_object_set_name: assertion `name != NULL' failed
(rhythmbox:2338): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Could not import pygtk
ImportError: No module named pygtk
Segmentation fault
Note that pygtk is again referenced. The weirdest part is that other program that's having this issue, an IM client called emesene, is one that I had been using just fine, without issue, for several sessions previous. Since trying to play that .mp3, it now won't run at all. I tried removing and re-installing emesene, to no avail. Running it from the Terminal gives:
andrew@Lovelace-Linux:~$ emesene
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/share/emesene/Controller.py", line 21, in <module>
import gtk
ImportError: No module named gtk
This time the missing module is gtk, but I know that emesene is written in Python, which the earlier "pygtk" is perhaps a reference to. Thus, the connecting thread between all these programs, as near as I can tell, is Python.

So I have built a program that takes a picture from two cameras every second and converts them both to jpeg format. The problem is that currently it takes ~2 seconds to convert a single raw photo to jpeg format, thus every second I add another raw photo (30 MB) to ram waiting to be converted to jpeg. So, theoretically the conversion to jpeg is running on a single core with hyperthreading, would I see better performance running the exact same process (a program pulling from a queue and converting to jpeg) running as a single process, or two concurrent processes? (both processes running on the same core, (so 1 thread on one clock cycle, the other on the other... (or one thread running on 1 core and the other on another core. What other steps would you take to improve the performance so there would no longer be a race condition?
-Currently using QT

If there's another way to improve a script that I have created, since I'm not an expert! It works, and it made what I wanted, but it took a while to do it... maybe it can be improved. Here's the background. I have one file, with 244000 lines, let's call it X. I needed to split it in 1000 files, each one of 244 lines. I also needed the files to have the .arp extension. So here is what I did:
Code:
for i in {1..1000}
do
sed -n '1,244p;244q' X > $i.arp
sed -i '1,244d;' X # in this way I deleted the copied lines each time
done

I'm trying to install a program which requires Java VM. The installer is a install.bin file, coming with a eclipse folder; in this folder, you can find a "jre" directory. I also installed Coconut Java virtual machine, as well as OpenJDK Java 6 runtime environment. However, I still can't install the program. Executing the installer gives me this error message:
Code:
Preparing to install. Extracting the installation resources from the installer archive. Configuring the installer for this system's environment. No Java virtual machine could be found from your PATH environment variable. You must install a VM prior to running this program. I think I should make Java VM available to the installer somehow, but I don't know how. I tried searching online but couldn't figure out the answer. Please help.

Kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (Slackware 12.0).
Bash 3.1.17.
I want to search an entire subtree of /, in the file system, for all files, with extension html, created on the hard disk. In addition, these have to be the last five created. I think I could split the problem into two parts: (a) Forget about the last condition. Then this is a job for the find command. (b) Sort the output of find using the date as the key, then use 'head' to print the desired output. But even two such simple steps are enough to justify the writing of a shell script. And here lies my weakness.
My script writing knowledge is rudimentary. What's the final purpose? Well, I lately saved four or five LQ pages onto disk containing information I consider valuable to me. But I don't exactly remember where on the disk. Then: either the problem posed is really of a very simple nature or it is not, in the latter case a script being mandatory. One of the algorithm drawbacks (the one described above) is that find may be running a great deal of time. My machine resources (RAM and CPU speed are low) are scarce and there possible are a large number of HTML files on the disk.

My program need to monitor the foler to know which file under the folder is being opened/created for writing. I add the folder into watch list using inotify_add_watch, when a file -- say 'AA' -- is created, I'll get the event through read api call. But the inotify_event only have file name 'AA' and a event mask. these parameters can't help me to know how the 'AA' is created/openned. So I have to scan the /proc folder to get to know how is 'AA' created/openned. I don't think this is a efficient way, especially if there are lots of files are openned/created in a short time span.

[URL] Essentially, this module can be fine-tuned to the user's liking, using four integers instead of a boolean. By allowing for the red, green, blue, and alpha values to be fine-tuned, the user can control how transparent or opaque their desktop is. And how is this possible? C++ instead of C. How do you guys think of being able to customize RGBA?

I have an awk program that finds all files of a specific filename and deletes them from selected subdirectories. There is logic in the awk to avoid certain subdirectories, and this is initialized via a parameter in the beginning statement of the awk. The parameter should have all of the subdirectory names at the top level. This varies from time to time, so I cannot hard-code the value.I'm having a problem initializing the awk parameter using sed. I'm setting a variable (named subdir) using an "ls" command piped to "xargs". I'm then trying to substitute that value into the awk using the sed command.

I have an existing line of code from a P2 script that I cannot find a solution to converting to P3:
Code:
for i, x in map(None, list1, list2):
I have found the information about converting the simple case:
map(None,x) becomes list(x)
But my googling was unable to find a solution when more than one iterable exists.

I have a python script I wrote a while ago and now I would like to call that script from inside C. I know how to do one command from C, but how would you execute an entire script from C, and passing arguments? Like:
Code:
int main(void)
{
python( myprogram(1 2 3) );
}
So I can pass arguments to my script.
