Programming :: Copy Files To Floppy In Specified Sector?
Jan 4, 2010
I am trying to make small kernel. I have written many programs and produce many .bin and .o files but what I want that to load every file from a specific location in specific sectors but don't know how to do that in linux , in dos same can be done by debug command.If It is not possible to achieve the specific location criterion please tell me how can I just copy many files serially to a floppy image.I have another question that if files are copied in floppy. How could I know in which sector the file has been loaded in floppy so that I can retrieve them by BIOS interrupt INT13.

I have a 160GB harddrive which I installed a F12, would like to upgrade to a bigger drive, but I hate to have to re-install everything.
Recommend a good disk copy utility? The utility should be able to not only copy files, but boot sector and everything. So I just need to make a copy, change my BIOS to boot from the new drive and run everything as before.

I just installed squeeze from a usb key. Installation went flawlessly but now I need the usb key to boot. Nothing happens if I let the bios boot from the HD or if I force it to do so. When it boot up from the usb key, the HD is read and the boot up sequence continues. Grub seems to be installed in /boot/grub. I imagine that I have to copy the usb key boot sector to the HD but how?

Old habits die hard...I wanted to run a DOS program and the most expedient way was to copy it to a bootable floppy. Problem one, floppy isn't mounted by default. Ok, so I mounted it, then attempted the copy. The copy failed almost immediately with an error message. I rebooted into ubuntu, did the same thing, and it worked.

I have been searching for a solution to the following problem:
When my distro of choice updates Firefox web browser, the directory name is '/usr/lib/firefox-<version>'.
The problem here is that the directory name is dynamic by nature and doesn't allow a simple static solution, e.g.
'cp -rf /usr/local/files/bookmarks.html /usr/lib/firefox/defaults/profile'.
The same quandary applies when adding extensions, changing prefs etc.
I have looked at the following commands:-
find, sed, xargs, grep, awk, fprint.
Unfortunately my grasp of syntax and programming is very simple at best.

I have a lot of filenames (strings) following the same convention
m02_+1+7_London_0000$01.cfg
m02_+1+8_London_0000$01.cfg
m02_+1+8_London_0000$01.cfg
[code].....
What I want to do is to create a script that will interpret the following string and save into variables part of its name
m02_+1+7_London_0000$01.cfg as
------X-Y--City---------
X=1
Y=7
City=London
[code]....
then I want to copy the files that go all the files with the same City and X and Y to the same subfolder City/MX.Y I will need some help start doing that. And I think the first would be to get part of the filenames strings into variables.

I've been trying to sort this out for several hours and I?m totally lost? I?ve been searching around, but haven?t found the solution to my problem. I have a directory with 100 files. I need to copy 10 lines of each files (let?s say from line 45 to 55) into one unique file. So I guess I could use sed ?w, but I didn?t manage to write the right script. I also tried using a loop to create 100 different files, each one with the 10 lines) to concatenate them later on. But I only got 1 file, not 100.

Here is what I currently do and want to automate:
1) I manually enter a particular web site address in the browser.
2) When the page displays on my machine, it shows a number of links I need to visit, one after the other.
3) Each of these links display another page (file) from which I "cut and paste" information. I do this by highlighting manually the wanted info, click "copy" then select an open file on my computer, select "undo" if necessary to remove any previous content, click "paste" and then "save".
4) I then call a Yabasic program that reads the saved file and trims unwanted info.
5) At the completion of the Yabasic program, I click the web page tag, click the "back" button to return to the first page (since I am in the second) and click the next link in this first page till all links have been visited.
6) visit the next known web site and repeat 1 to 5
In an automated program, what I need to do is:
1) Visit the known page of the web site showing the links
2) save the page showing the links (the first page)
3) make a list of those links
4) visit each link one after the other and save its page from which I will programmatically (Yabasic) select info.
5) repeat 1 to 4
I can do this in "Yabasic" (which can issue Linux commands) or PHP although I do not know PHP much.the purpose of this is to associate towns and cities of the world with their respective political/geographical divisions and their respective time zone. This has to be done often because that data changes regularly.

I've got quite a decent rsync script setup, however I'd like to invoke it whenever there's change to a file. My initial idea was to use find, however this has two major flaws - the first being my particular unix veriant cant understand -print0 which means this doesn't work, the second is that I'm not 100% sure how to put variables into quotation marks so ls can understand the target:
Code:
for i in `find /shares/ -mtime -1 -print`; do ls -ltr $i;done

I'm writing a C program that reads the boot sector of a USB disk. (it is mounted as /dev/sda1). I'm able to read the sector, by the calls code...
The problem is when I wish to write. I use the call:
bytesWrite = write(fd, buf, 512)
The 'write' returns the value of 512, which looks as if the write was successful, yet
when I read again the /dev/sda1 device, I see that no writing was actually made.
Can anybody tell me what do I need to do in order to allow an actual write to the
device?

I have a small project that I am trying to do for my job to help us out. Basically, I need to make a tool that lets me view all the sectors of a hard drive in hexadecimal format to make sure they are all zero after a low-level format. I need it to be very minimal, and display the data in a way that I can scroll down and skim through the sectors. Doesn't have to be pretty, just functional.I need it to do more things down the road, but this is the first hurdle I need to overcome. I would like to create a GUI interface so it looks nice, but first I am only concerned with the sector viewing function. I am not entirely sure where I should start.
I see there is a tool called dd I could use to read the hard drive and I am wondering if I need to use that, or if I can just open /dev/hda as a file and be able to view all the sectors that way.Also, just to clarify, I am wanting to write this tool for linux,specifically DSL. I need it to be a very small distribution that can be loaded quickly from a usb drive, cd, or over the network with PXE.

Is there something weird about the FLOPPY DRIVE on F12? Nothing associated with it works & I can't get an icon for it. Also the FLOPPY FORMATTER no longer works. (mine is an internal drive)- I had some really miner quirks with it in 10 but it worked. I had some workaround launchers that I used until an upgrade semi-fixed it. (It would give a false error that it couldn't run but did. I just ignored it.)
I tried to edit FSTAB to cure a problem of my BACKUP drive showing up twice*** so while I was in there I added the stuff for the floppy & it still doesn't work. If I try to mount it manually, I get the error that /dev/fd0 doesn't exist.I tried to find some info on it & it SEEMS that there MAY be a bug but I'm not sure as the info is a bit confusing as to just what version & such they are talking about. And there was also the problem that all the stuff seemed to be OLD or not related to my problem.I why I quite hacking at my system, is that all my workaround launchers & the formatter say that there are GNOME things missing & they can't run. So I figure that there is something missing or screwy already & that I'd better ask BEFORE I make things worse or actually break something.With the fact that floppies are about gone, it's getting to be not that big of a deal but I still find myself having to use them for repair purposes (albeit, not as much) & it gets to be a bit of a pain to fire up M$ just to do something like this.
*** It appears that the one in FSTAB was the one I needed, so where would the OTHER one be so I can get rid of it? Or at least make it auto mount.

I am having a Promise TX4650 RAID controller & trying to create a driver floppy for installing the drivers. Also am using RHEL 5, I can create the driver floppy, but when I type "mount /dev/fd0 /media/floppy" I get error: "mount: mount point /media/floppy does not exist".Can I get the files in a format other than the ext2 floppy image, so that we do not need to use a floppy drive?There is a readme file inside the driver archive & you can use that as a reference.

I have a china phone which has mp3 player and unfortunately it reads the file names in its memory card in sequential order according where the file is saved. The file system is NTFS. cod
**Note: DDD song was last because I saved AAA to EEE songs then later added DDD song
Then suddenly i deleted BBB song and replaced it with FFF song code...
This is kinda lame. but the OS of the phone has no capability sorting the file according to filename in its built in mp3 player.
my question is how can I sort the files sector by sector(is my term right?) so the lame mp3 player would read the files finally in alphabetically sorted order. I Will plug my phone on my PC
I am using ubuntu 10.4

Slackware 12.2 has the unkind habit of deleting all the /dev/fd?u* floppy special files upon boot-up. I have to make another directory (I use /floppy) to contain these files so I don't have to keep copying them from an earlier distribution (12.1) Now, for example, to format a 1743 kilobyte floppy, I do fdformat /floppy/fd0u1743 mformat a:If I copy these special files to /dev (where they belong) then some part of Slackware Linux 12.2 deletes the special files when I power down and power up the machine.Slackware 12.1 and earlier leave floppy special files severely alone upon shutdown/startup.I cannot seem to "grep" a reference to /dev/fd anywhere in /etc/rc.d or its subdirectories. Why is Slackware 12.2 deleting them?
