I've created (as a homework) to create as many folders as told but I still need to check if the variable is a number or not :
Code: #!/bin/sh
echo "Veuillez saisir un nombre"; read nmbr
nmbrf=$nmbr
while [ $nmbrf -gt 0 ]
do mkdir -p "foo$nmbrf"
nmbrf=`expr $nmbrf - 1`
echo "$nmbrf"
how do I check that nmbr is a number or something else?
I want to insert a line at a particular line number using sed or awk. where line number is not fixed and is in form of variable.
I want to use variable in sed or awk command.I tried something like below, but no luck.
I'm trying to read content of file to variable and use this variable in for loop. The problem is, when I have c++ comment style in file - /*. Spaces in line are also interpreted as separated lines.
For example:
Code:
Changing $files to "$files" eliminate these problems but causes that whole content of variable is treated as one string (one execution of loop).
my script has a variable which comes in the form +00.00 +0.00 -00.00 or -0.00 (the numbers can be any in that form) for any that have a + symbol I need to remove the +, but if it has a - symbol it needs to stay.
i need to make a new variable with the string from the old variable btut without any plus sign. I have tried a lot of different ways with no success, each thing I tried either left the + or removed the entire string. I think this should work but doesn't
foo=+12.40
bar=${foo#+}
how I can search within a variable and assign the results to a new variable. I'll use the following as an example -
cars="Audi BMW Cadillac Chevy Dodge Ferrari Ford Mercedes"
list=`echo ${cars} | egrep -o '<A?+|<C+'`
with the echo command I get the following output assigned to list -
A
C
C
What I'd like to get for output is -
Audi
Cadillac
Chevy
how I could do this regardless of upper/lower case letters?
How do i convert variable to string?

I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:
number="1234567890"
number="22390"
I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.

I have on my windows machine several hundred files that are a format of .nc .ncs for a CNC machine. I need to convert them to txt which is something as easy as opening in notepad and then saving as .txt but there are so many that this kind of action would take way too long.
The reason I am writing the linuxquestions is because I would feel more comfortable in loading a live CD and using some sort of terminal command to do this than I would to download one of the many "freeware" type programs I have found for windows (even more so since I have had a root kit before and had to start all the way over to get rid of it).
I need to know:
1. Is this possible to do with the terminal without super advanced knowledge.
2. Can one please point me in the right direction; something to read or an example
Here's the line from my fstab that auto mounts my NTFS Windows drive:
/dev/sda1 /media/disk ntfs-3g defaults,umask=007,gid=46,noatime 0 0
When writing to the drive the max speed I get is 5 megabytes per second. I Googled it and tried some other posted Fstab lines but all disabled my write access for some reason even without "RO" in the line. Can someone please give me some guidance as to how I get the normal Sata HD transfer speed which is more like 55-75 megs or more per second or so?
When i ssh to server using -X, i always confuse about which display number i should export. It seems to me sometimes the display number has been used by something, so what i can do is only
export DISPLAY=localhost:0 && xclock
export DISPLAY=localhost:1 && xclock
export DISPLAY=localhost:2 && xclock

I have a first generation iPod Shuffle (yes, I know it's old) with 512 megabytes of space (feel free to laugh). I also have arch linux installed on my computer, with a music folder containing about 30 folders full of music. This totals to about 2 gigabytes of music.
What I want to do is: create a script that moves no more than 512 megabytes (it can be slightly under this amount, but NOT over) of random songs from my music folder (and it's subsequent artist/album folders) to a separate folder. I will then use gtkpod to move those random songs in the new folder to my iPod Shuffle.

sed -n '/Sales ID: ${array[$i]}/,/Totals:/p'
that command creates empty files. so my guess is that its not recognizing the array as an array but as text?
how would i be able to utilize the array in the command? i got it, didnt think that if i doubled up the single quotes that it would work, but this worked:
sed -n '/Sales ID: '${array[$i]'}/,/Totals:/p'
