I am working with a Tcl script and have some strings in the following format (RE):
[a-zA-Z]+[0-9]{6}-[0-9]
There are some leading letters, combinations of capital and lowercase. Then six digits, followed by a hyphen, then one more digit. I would like to remove all of the leading alphabetic characters from the string. The resulting string would then be in this format: [0-9]{6}-[0-9]. In other words, six numeric digits, a hyphen, then one more digit.
I have tried:
Code:
set newstr [string trimleft $origstr alpha]
But that only removes the first alphabetic character, not all of them.
I couldn't get anything with regsub to work correctly, but I am somewhat of a noob with RE's in general and regsub in particular. There are usually 5 leading letters at the beginning of these strings, and I could in most cases get away with using string replace and constant indices to extract the substring. However, my preference is for this to be robust enough to handle all cases with 1 through n leading alphabetic characters.

I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:
number="1234567890"
number="22390"
I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.

I have on my windows machine several hundred files that are a format of .nc .ncs for a CNC machine. I need to convert them to txt which is something as easy as opening in notepad and then saving as .txt but there are so many that this kind of action would take way too long.
The reason I am writing the linuxquestions is because I would feel more comfortable in loading a live CD and using some sort of terminal command to do this than I would to download one of the many "freeware" type programs I have found for windows (even more so since I have had a root kit before and had to start all the way over to get rid of it).
I need to know:
1. Is this possible to do with the terminal without super advanced knowledge.
2. Can one please point me in the right direction; something to read or an example

After running the following command, I get:
[root@yukiko /]# find / -iname .bashrc
/home/clamav/.bashrc
/home/vpopmail/.bashrc
/etc/skel/.bashrc
/root/.bashrc
But I would like to have a command that prints a specific line by supplying the command with the line number, for example:
[root@yukiko /]# find / -iname .bashrc | getline(2)
/home/vpopmail/.bashrc
Is there such a command on CentOS?

Say I have a file as
[code]....
It would be great, if i could issue a command (Vi/Bash/awk, ...) in order to obtain
[Code]...
So, the "replace string" should be replaced by another string containing the counter of replacement.

I used xbindkeys and xvkbd to map my extra mouse buttons to page up and page down. With kde 4.4 it worked, but since I upgraded to kde 4.5 beta, I get the following error when xbindkeys starts:
Code:

Code:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-adobe-courier-medium-r-*--14-*-*-*-m-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-adobe-courier-bold-r-*--14-*-*-*-m-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-adobe-courier-medium-r-*--12-*-*-*-m-*-*-*" to type FontStruct
X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist) Major opcode of failed request: 45 (X_OpenFont) Serial number of failed request: 643 Current serial number in output stream: 654 xlsfonts|grep adobe|grep courier
[Code]...
I went looking for those files to see if I could symlink a 14 one to either the 15 one or the other ones, but I couldn't find the files anyways. I get this when attempting to run an X windowed program (qmon) and it crashes out while printing the first set of errors.

After upgrading to Lucid I get the following warnings which I did not have before:
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-courier-medium-r-*-*-*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-*" to type FontStruct
Warning: Cannot convert string "-*-helvetica-medium-r-*--*-120-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1" to type FontStruct
These occur when I start emacs and xpdf. On searching I see people are adding font paths to their xorg.conf file but on looking at mine there is no longer a font section. Also I have few directories fonts/X11/usr/share/fonts/X11$ ls misc/util/. I'm assuming the above folders and xorg.conf file are correct.
