Programming :: Bash Script: Catch File Not Found Error And Send To /dev/null
Apr 21, 2010
I have the following working script. It checks the directory for txt files, if files are there, it copies to another directory or gives error. I would like to exclude "file not found" errors and send them to /dev/null. All other errors should go to the email address as usual.
Code:
#!/bin/bash
function err
{
if [[ $? -ne 0 ]]
[Code]....

I want to catch some outputs in two different log files in bash, file simple.log and all.log So far, the script is started like this:
Code:
xterm -e "(./myscript.sh | tee -a simple.log) >& all.log"
What I want is:
- In simple.log, I want all the stdout but WITHOUT errors.
- In all.log I want BOTH stdout and stderr.
So all is ok, and the output becomes:
all.log
Code:
starting copying files
mv: cannot move ... : permission denied
copying completed
simple log
Code:
starting copying files
copying completed
But, in the new xterm, I'm loosing stdout. There is no output.How can I have the files logged as they are but also have the stdout in the xterm.

sed -n 8p file.txt
returns the 8th line to the StdOut.
If I assign the value to the variable line = $(sed -n 8p file.txt)
and now print it out with echo
echo $line
the line would be printed.
But what if the file has only 4 lines. What value would be assigned to the variable line?
I want to know that because I want to only print it if the value is "something", that is not null.
In Java for example I would do it like this...
String line = "";
line = reader.readLine(); // or anything else..
if(line!=null){
System.out.println(line);
}
How would I check if the value is not "null"(I don't know if bash knows null)

How do you catch user input while the script is running? Or, how would you make two scripts run at the same time, but use input from one script to the other? The program I'm trying to make, echos text on the screen continuously, but while thats happening, I want the user to be able to input something, so the program can detect the input and display something else. So I thought maybe I could make two scripts run to do each task.

I need to read a binary file using my C++ application. That binary file may contain arbitary characters and it also contains 0 at some places. I need to read the file without considering null terminating character. (i.e. considering 0 as a normal byte and not as the end of the string)Can some one suggest me a method to read the buffer while ignoring the null terminated character.

I'm setting up a machine that's going to be used to test randomly connected tape drives one at a time, and as such, I'm writing the test routine using mt in a bash script, for user-friendliness. The problem is the block device name changes on occasion as tape drives are swapped out and busses are rescanned, so I can't "hard code" a block name into the script.
I know programs like lsscsi and hwinfo will give you block device names as part of their output, but I can't seem to grep anything in such a way as to have the final output be just the block name (ie /dev/st2, or optimally 'st2'), so that I can just have the script read said output, and drop it into the necessary variable.

I've installed a few too many interesting items with Yumex into Fedora-14..
When I click to download an interesting pix, for my editing hobby, I get this here pop-up after saving the pix:
"The program executable (null) could not be found. Make sure that ClamAV/ClamWin is installed properly and check the Fireclam settings."
I searched Yumex for Clam and Fireclam, and they aren't installed, and I don't want it installed, because Clam slows-down the operation a lot in these prehistoric old towers...
Seems I installed a peripheral for Null and Clam, but what could it be..? I've searched through Yumex.. I just can't figure it...
I installed all the "nulls", hoping that would eliminate that irritating pop-up.. It didn't... Seems my only option is to reinstall the OS to get rid of the pop-up.. Is there another option?..

I want to edit the environment with a bash script, a part of my script is showed in the post. Its not everything, but the rest is working fine. At the begin of my script I've the follow line Code: #!/bin/bash
set -e First I tried with this solution. Code: sudo chmod 777 /etc
sudo rm /etc/environment
echo 'PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/ruby/bin"' > */etc/environment
sudo chmod 755 /etc
source /etc/environment Error, source not found
The second solution was this:
Code: sudo chmod 777 /etc
sudo rm /etc/environment
echo 'PATH="/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/games:/usr/local/ruby/bin"' > */etc/environment
sudo chmod 755 /etc
. /etc/environment
This one didn't give an error, but if I try this:
Code: ruby -v got an error
so the environment didn't worked.
If I use both commands
Code: source /etc/environment
Code: . /etc/environment
In the terminal, without a bash script, it works, so if I do
Code: ruby -v
It works and showed the right version.

I have a server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux ES (2.6.9.55.ELsmp). When it starts up I get the following error: Uncompressing Linux... Ok, booting the kernel. Red Hat nash version 4.2.1.10 starting WARNING: can't access (null) exec of init ((null)) failed!!!: 14 unmount /initrd/dev failed: 2 Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
After that I got no response from the OS. I have the installation CD, so I tried to start the rescue mode, while going through the steps I received an error stating that mounting to /mnt/sysimage failed and that if I want to I can access a shell. I really don't know what to do from here

I have a Socket library, written in C++, in which the method used to send data never has the opportunity to handle an errno of SIGPIPE. Thus I thought perhaps I should setup a signal handler to receive the signal, but this too is not being called.Is there something that I am missing or doing that is completely wrong? Below is the relevant code. Note that a SIGPIPE signal is generated when the Server is unable to send data to the Client (e.g. the client has terminated).Server code:
Code:
#include <TCPServerSocket.hpp>
#include <string>

I am currently doing a research on video transmission over wireless LAN. I tend to transmit my offline file (xx.svc) from server to client.It may sound stupid (since I have a very little knowledge about c programming and raw socket), but my biggest challenges is that when I want to write the file to the buffer, how actually to define/include the file at the programming coding? where I need to locate the file? Is it at the same folder with my c programming, or somewhere in the linuxinclude folder?
Can anyone just give a simple example on how to include a file and write it into a buffer before send it through raw socket.

I have this problem.I need to do this:I got a small version of Linux installed in some small devices. These devices come from the provider with this small version of Linux installed.This devices should send data to some other machine in the internet. I have tested wput for this purpose with a PC which has an Ubuntu version 10 and it works fine. However, when I try wput in the small device, I get an error. It seems that the wput might need some libraries to work with the small version of Linux installed in the small device.The fact of using wput or not is optional. I just need being able to send files through ftp with this small version of Linux.The thing is that to be able to run wput in this small version of Linux, it seems that many of the needed libraries were missing. So what I did was just install all the needed libraries. But still the wput program fails in its first line.
