I have installed edu life suse 11.3 and when I logged in with GNOME 3 preview .. screen blincked 3-4 time and there was no panel after that I automatically logout from gnome3 environment. How to fix it ?

I am running openSUSE 11.3 on a Lenovo S10 netbook. I have the default panel that is installed with the Slab etc at the bottom of the screen set to autohide. However, it does not do this consistently. Sometimes I have to minimize and then maximize an app window to get it to hide again.

I can see that the system has the right date and time but it seems to get stuck on the Gnome panel. I have researched, ntp, ntpd, ntpupdate, tried all the tricks. Not sure what to do next.

Only the biggest problem I am facing is, if I lock the screen and leave my desk for couple of hours then user gets logged out automatically. Which is resulting all the documents and applications gets closed. I am unable to work in my desktop now.

The problem is that I cannot get it back no matter how much I hoover or click with the mouse - it is gone!...So how do I get it back??? I am able to add "Locations" to Gnome's Clock applet, which seems like it should take care of time zone information (see attached screenshot). However, I can't figure out how to set one (or the other) as my current location so that it will update my time zone information.
View 4 Replies View RelatedWhen I travel, I would like to tell my laptop that I, as a user, am in a different time zone that what the OS may think is local. And I would like the clock on my desktop (default Gnome bar date/time display) to show the local time.
Instead, I currently have to use sudo and change the system time... (click on the clock, choose time settings, set system time -- there are no other choices given). The applet thing allows me to add other locations, but they only show up if I click on the icon, as extra times below the main one.
Am I missing something? Using the wrong app?

View 3 Replies View RelatedSince I enjoyed Gnome shell with Ubuntu 9.10 (but Ubuntu runs too slow on this computer for my druthers), I thought it would be fun to check out gnome shell on 11.3. I thought that since my 11.3 has gnome 2.30, that the gnome shell in the software manager would be a concomitant version, so I installed it. I then followed the directions given in the second posting of Enabling Gnome Shell in 11.3?
When I logged back in, I selected Gnome 3 Preview [even though I hadn't thought that that was what I'd installed -- (has openSUSE retired all older versions of Gnome shell?)]. The desktop won't boot (I don't know what the correct way of saying it is). The splash shows, but the icons just intermittently flash off and on at random intervals, never quite making it all the way "on." When I right click the bottom of the screen, I can select "terminal" (when I can accurately coordinate my double-click with the random, intermittent flashing), but then the terminal also does the random, intermittent flashing as well. So I can never get anything typed in. When I reboot, there's no login box.
I have just updated to karmic. For some odd reason, the time/date indicator on the top panel now spreads the data over two lines, rather than placing them side by side. There doesn't seem to be any option in the preferences program to control this.
This means that the panel cannot be reduced below a two line minimum. Not only have I lost desktop space, but the panel icons have expanded to suit the new thicker panel.
Whenever i put a panel on the bottom and deselect the expand option in the panels preferences... after i log back in the panel has repositioned itself to the top of the page... i put it down and the same thing happens...
is there any way to fix this?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled and forgot how I added a panel to my second screen, cause when you add a panel you choose left right top or bottom, but no option for second screen... finally I added a new panel, then right click on the new panel> properties, then unchecked "expand" then was able to move the new panel to second monitor, then set to whatever side and recheck "expand" then it sticks to the second screen, then add to panel, and select window list, then all new windows will be shown on the appropriate panel/screen

Therefore, I am looking for some sort of workaround that resolves the issue without having to revise my desktop layout in the process.I am running a dual monitor setup through nVidia's TwinView setting. The primary monitor is 1600x900, secondary is 1440x900, and the secondary is placed to the right of primary. I am running Lucid with the compiz window manager.
On the primary monitor's portion of the screen area, I have a right- and bottom-side panel, and the secondary monitor has only a bottom-side panel. When maximizingapplications on the primary monitor, the bottom-side panel area is taken into account and the vertical resize ends there. However, the application maximizes underneath the right-side panel to the monitor's full horizontal dimension and thereby becomes partially obscured. The issue, as best I can tell, is that the window manager does not recognise a panel that is officially positioned in the center of the X screen as being a boundary despite it being linked to the right edge of the monitor, which does qualify as a boundary.
Causing the application to maximize over the panel is not an acceptable solution, as it denies me access to the utilities I have set up there. The so-called "autohide" is also unacceptable, as that simply causes the panel to drift onto the secondary monitor and then enter a loop where it flips back and forth between monitors when I attempt to access it.
I've just installed 11.04 and I have switched to the classic gnome. When I enable my second monitor the gnome panel moves to the 2nd monitor, though I would like to have it on my primary. It used to be that I could hold alt and move the panel to any edge of any screen. This doesn't work anymore. How to move the classic gnome panels?

If this file exists it must be readable by you for GNOME to work properly. try logging in with failsafe session and removing the file." 1. all empty drawers can operate normally

Inside the applications like gnome terminal processing is fast, Thunderbird and Firefox do seem to have slowed but Kate, Kaffeine work fine.
