During my research on enabling composite effects and xinerama, I stumbled upon a few threads and discussions which showed xserver 1.10+ has resolved the conflicts between the 2 modules. I'm wondering if anyone knows of someone/somewhere to get a SUSE compatible build of xserver 1.10+ ? If not, could someone point me toward an easy-to-follow tutorial on how to build packages for SUSE?

When i have enable xinerama for 2 displays and i enable visual effect it says The "Composite extension is not available" but i have enabled it in "xorg.conf" but effect are working with not enabled xinerama.

I have an ATI Radeon HD 3300 on-board video chipset, and an ATI Radeon HD 4350 PCI card. What I want is to have both displays available from one mouse/keyboard. I want to play media on one and have the other as my main desktop.The problem is that with Xinerama enabled, KDE desktop effects do not work (KDE says XComposite and XDamage are not available, even though I explicitly enabled them as extensions in the xorg.conf file), and performance is quite bad. Without Xinerama enabled, performance is great, desktop effects work great, but there's a lot of trouble with full-screen video, and the KWin window manager does not apply in the second display (although I can run a second instance of KWin on :0.1).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to adjust Xinerama to place 1 desktop on each of my 2 monitors and not stretch a single over both. With the current set up there is a problem with window placement upon opening new widows or context dialog boxes. I realize that I could adjust placement properties and select window placement with the mouse but this is still lacking in productivity. My monitors are not next to on another so this is more of a problem than it seems.

Currently I have a perfect setup of 3 monitors,2 GPUs running under Xinerama. I cannot get desktop effects running at Normal or Extra, when I try to enable either one I get the following message "The Composite extension is not available". Without Xinerama it works along with Compiz. I am running Ubuntu 9.04 x64 with a ATI HD4870 and ATI HD4350 GPU. I have the latest ATI display drivers (set up properly to my knowledge). Desktop effects are not enabled and in system settings there is the following message "Desktop effects are not available on this system due to the following technical issues: Required X extensions (XComposite and XDamage) are not available."
The nouveau driver is installed. Peering at /etc/X11/xorg.conf I get three pieces of information
- driver ="nv"
- composite ="off"
- threats of war, famine, death and the other one if I edit the file by hand
I tried Xorg -configure and tested the result as it prompts, but that file seemed to contain errors
I can't find anything in YaST to edit the file
- is "nv" correct?
Apart from backing up xorg.conf (which I have) and firing up a text editor to change "off" to "on" does anyone have any more intelligent suggestions?
I have a machine I have already installed 11.3 on. How do I set it so it has a automatic login for a specific user into the KDE desktop? I looked in YAST but didn't see anything obvious to enable that behavior.

Now my problem; I have a normal desktop pc (I don't want to set it up as a server) but when I check the hardness of my set up with Gibson Research Centre, it fails. It can see ports 22,23,80,443 as closed but still visible.....? I have never had this happen to me before and struggling my way through yast firewall tool, I can find no easy way of sorting this out.
Since I have upgraded to KDE 4.5 I can't play games (native or wine) without disabling composite before start playing.When I start a game its window begins to shiver (to tremble or to shake... not sure) and so I have to disable composite first and then relaunch the game.I never had to do this in KDE 4.4.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI did my research and understand that RandR is replacing Xinerama and Sax2, it's a good thing in my opinion but it's not there yet -- at least not for my setupI fully admit, this is not a simple usage. Anyway, I have 4 monitors setup in an inverted "T" arrangement (think 3 in a row at eye level and one above the center monitor) on two NVIDIA 6800 GT cards.Out of the box the detection software gets my monitor details right for one of the monitors on the card it detects but not the other. So, I get 1680x1050 on one monitor and something silly like 800x600 on the other (does anyone have less capability than 1024x768 anymore? I think less than that as a default on anything other than a mobile device (like a smart phone) is pointless conservatism but I digress from the issue.)
My other NVIDIA card doesn't show at all so I am stuck with one good monitor setup, one bad, and 2 non-existent.Then I ran Sax2 and got some mode info. that I had to figure out myself in OSE 11.0 so that was nice (still didn't detect my full setup but it never did so that's fine). Next I took my xorg.conf file from my 11.0 installation and put it in the /etc/X11 directory of my new 11.2 installation (incorporating the updated mode info. for my monitor).I then installed the NVIDIA native drivers and it looked like everything was working as before.Except, after a while I noticed this error: "Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0"." Coming up after various actions which prompted me to learn about RandR. Running "xrandr --version" I get this result:

I heard a lot about NVIDIA Xinerama & Compiz not working but on looking further, in recent times people have got them to work. I've setup Xinerama with 4 monitors working across 2 dual video cards and it works great. I have the latest NVIDIA drivers (using the one-click) and I just installed the latest compiz using one-click as well.
The cards are as follows:
Chip: 0 is -> NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 01:00:0 0x10de 0x0402 AGP nvidia
Chip: 1 is -> NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT 02:00:0 0x10de 0x0402 AGP nvidia
(I chose these because they have no fans and when working from home, quiet is nice to have!)
The following options are recommended to run compiz with NVIDIA and I have enabled them all at one point. However, looking through carefully I don't need to since using the latest drivers and having pretty good video cards all this seems to be (according to the documentation) automatically enabled.

Today I bought a new monitor (IPS236V) to use it to watch movies and tv while I'm working on the other one.. I thought it's the best to activate Xinerama which could be done easy via CCC. But I'm not able to change the resolutions now as these panels are disabled in CCC. The first monitor is set to its native resolution, but the second is something lower.How can I configure both monitors to there native resolution?

The KDE User Guide says that a driver supporting version 1.2 is necessary. However the nvidia driver for eForce FX Go5200 seems to support only version 1.1.Is there a way to use both monitors with SUSE 11.2? I am quite desperate since for my work using only 1 monitor is definitely a handicap.

I have installed 10.04 on my macbook air. As I can't physically connect a macbook air to the internet there is no way to download the necessary drivers and the 'hardware packages' doesn't have the nvidea or broadcom packages which were present when I booted off the livecd. I presume therefore that, like gparted, these are only present on the livecd & aren't installed by default. When I installed karmic I downloaded the drivers from my mac partition then transferred them over. I've tried doing the same with the lucid equivalents,[URL].. but when I try to unpack them (32-bit versions as is the version of Lucid I have) in the correct order each returns an error saying the drivers are either damaged or I don't have permission. I definately have the necessary read/write permissions so assume they must be damaged somehow.
If I can't connect to the internet Ubuntu is useless. Has anyone got any idea as to how I can enable wifi please?

For whatever reasons, I cannot seem to enable metacity transparency. I'm running the 64 bit version of Ubuntu 11.04 and I broke Unity in favor of Gnome 3. I have enabled metacity compositing and adjusted the opacity to the desired level via the configuration editor.
However, there is no transparency whatsoever. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm currently working hard on creating Gnome Shell themes and GTK+ 3 themes that look and work well together.
Suggest some thrust areas of research in Linux .

I (and those who kindly helped) went through hell building the driver for mi wireless, but apparently that's over now. The reason I know that is that when I go to System-->Administration-->Network, I can see the interfaces that are detected: Wired Connection, which I enabled by setting the automatic dhcp option, and Wireless Connection, which is not activated. When I double click in Wireless Connection, a window opens with an unchecked box saying "Enable this connection" so I check the box and the previously greyed options become subject for editing. I have two setting I can configure: Wireless Setting, which have Network Name, password type and Network password Connection Settings, which has Configuration, IP Adress, Subnet mask and Gateaway Adress.
Since I'm hopping to get wireless working to a point which i can automatically connect to wireless whose passwords I know or that are open (like un public spaces) I think the best option to choose in Connection Settings-->Configuration is Automatic Configuration (DHCP). When I choose that, all other options under Connections Settings become grayed.
In Wireless Settings-->Password type, the default choice was WPA Personal. Network Name and network password are blank. The problem is that, as it is, the "OK" button of the Network window is grayed out, so the only option is to Cancel, in which case the Wireless Network remains dissabled. I noticed that if I write something (anything) in the field of Network Name (ESSID) the OK button can be selected, but I don't know what should I write in that space. How do I know which name is appropiate? Does it matter? Can I choose whatever name I want?

I instaled Ubuntu a recently and have been trying it out (my first attemt to use Linux OS) So I was playing around with Desktop panels and I'll say I'm very impressed with all the crap you can put on it. So of course I deleted the default ones and created my own one. The problem is this: I found all the things i need using 'Add to panel' but my panel won't show the open applications on it . Can some1 tell me how can i add this to my own panel (or at least bring back the default panels)?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've just partitioned my hard drive with GParted so that I have space to install and run Windows OS based programmes such as Monkey Island (wine simply won't work) and other PC games. I have the Windows XP SP2 Installation CD but my OS (Intrepid Ibex) won't allow me to autorun the CD and proceed to installation.
Now having hunted around the net little, it seems the answer is System->Preferences->Removable Drives and Media. Problem is, I don't have a Removable Drives and Media option on this menu. Is there a workaround for this? E.g., is there a way of using the Terminal to enable autorun, or is there another way I can do this?As I'm pretty new to this thing, feel free to use short words and detailed explanations.
Installed Ubuntu 10.10, 64bit, been working flawlessly for a week.
I have 2 nVidia Corporation G96 [GeForce 9400 GT] Graphics Cards and 2 LG Monitors. I installed the nVidia drivers from the website and everything is working very well. Using Xinerama to extend my desktop.
The problem comes in when I add an additional user to the system. It doesn't matter if it's 1 or 2 users, if they are added into the administrator group or as a desktop user, I can delete re-add them, create a completely different user but the problem persists.
As soon as I login as the new user and go to System | Preferences | Appearance | Visual Effects and try and enable either 'Normal' or Extra' I get the following error;
"The Composite Extension is not Available"
This is strange to me because composite, everything, is working fine for the default user, I have no problems whatsoever, but any additional user I setup it seems the graphics is borked, like it's not picking up the correct drivers or something.
I did a clean install of Ubuntu 10.04 except for the /home partition. I have two monitors. I can't get the setup I had on 9.10 where the second monitor was an extension of the first, and extra visual effects were enabled.

I set the each monitor to be a separate X screen, enable Xinerama (I think that's what I need for the extended display), and clicked Save to X Configuration File. Sometimes I merge it with the existing file. At this point I restart and the error, "The Composite extension is not available" is displayed when I try to enable extra visual effects.
I am trying to put my appreance preferences to extra so taht I can enable compiz however I get the error message "Composite extension is not available"

the above xorg gets my flawless playback in xbmc (xbox media center) or 1080 movies.
In the composite of the effect desktop I can to use only xrender, just select opengl, I did not make use, why ?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am almost tempted to go back to an old slackware to try this. Anyway, I found a circuit (with just a few resistors) that allows vga output to go to composite input. To my amazement it actually works and it is very clear, but has a double screen. I am told, to fix it you need to change the horizontal sync and or refresh rate for the card. (17 instead of 35). How would I do this in xorg.conf?
