I accidentally ran mkfs.ext3 /dev/sdb on the wrong drive.It used to be 2 NTFS partitions with lots of data. is there any hope I can only change the file system to ntfs back and revert what I did?not sure if mkfs erase the data or just rewrite some partition table.

I have more than a dozen servers running CentOS (mostly supermicro servers) everytime i do mkfs.ext3 or mkfs.ext4, it always hangs the server (nothing is responding, not even the terminal) can't even do Ctrl+C to kill it. but the funny thing is, if i leave it on for hours, it'll finish eventually.
this puzzles me, i've tried so many different SATA drives and different servers, different kernels, different CentOS. for example purposes, my CentOS 5.3 runs 2.6.18-92.1.13.el5 kernel. i also have 5.4 and 5.5. mkfs.ext3 works fine on SAS, but always hangs on SATA. here's where it usually hangs Writing inode tables: 2126/7453
I've a new external usb drive that was shipped formatted fat32. I wanted to convert this to ext3; so I performed a mkfs.ext3. I then noticed that fdisk was still reporting the usb drive as fat32 (even after reboot), but mount was reporting ext3: so I fdisk'ed the drive and change the partition's system id to 83 (Linux)
View 1 Replies View RelatedopenSuse 11.2 KDE 4 desktop User = newbie I was having some trouble with a Hard drive that I store my photo's and other personal data on. Fisrtly, it was messing my OS up, so that it would not boot to the desktop, but only to the command line where it would report that this drive was somehow corrupted and needed to be repaired. Secondly, the OS was reporting that certain files were 380,000.2 TB in size. this drive is only 200 GB.I didn't want to do the repair until I found a way to back up my data. I found another hard drive to do backup to but I had to take some data off of it. Which I did.
In the spirit of trying learn command line I decided to partition and format the hard drive using fdisk. I found some easy to use directions and proceeded to partition the drive. Unfortunately, I failed to realize the directions were only for the partitioning part [my fault for not reading further]. What I missed was that after using fdisk to partition, you must use mkfs to set filesystem type.[I thought I had done that in fdisk using the "l" , "t" commands within fdisk].
My questions are:
1] Can I do this mkfs command after I have put my data on the new hard drive or should I start fresh and redo partioning? [I have not deleted the other drive so my data is still there.]
2] What would be the cause of the incorrectly reported file sizes?
A friend accidentally did mkfs.vfat on my 1Tb ext. hard drive..It's now showing as 400 GB free where it was 10 GB previously and the remaining data is being shown as weird symbols and empty folders and yet it occupies more than 500GB..Any way to recover the data completely?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had a working Ubuntu 9.10 with Windows 7 installed, and i was writing an image of IPCOP [URL] to the USB drive incorrectly, i did mkfs on my primary partation i.e. /dev/sda1 now i am trapped in situation, i was trying to write and usb-hdd image of ipcop on USB Drive, while doing so, i have given following commands
1. mkfs.vfat /dev/sda1
2. e2label usb-pen
3. zcat filename > /dev/sda1
* now the stupid thing i have done, is given /sda1( My HDD ) instead of /sdb1 (USB Drive), it has successfully loaded IPCOP bootable on my primary drive, and my laptop is not working now.

now i want to get my partitions & data back, if anybody have idea about how to get rid of this situation. A HP Netserver LP2000r, with original SCSI controller and HP NetRaid-2M controller, 3x 36GB Ultra3 HDD in RAID5, Debian (sarge/etch), has crashed after 992 days without reboot. From all that I can see, a hardware failure, most likely with the memory. The HP Diagnostic tools cannot find any problem, but everytime I boot into Knoppix, I get between 2minutes and 2 hours of runtime, and then either a kernel oops or just a complete and sudden halt.
Well, the box has earned its money. However, there is some data on the drives that I need to recover (yes, I have beaten myself up properly about not backing up that data, don't even go there !). There are three partitions: sda1 is /, sda2 is swap and sda3 is a LVM volume with 3 logical volumes on it. As far as I can tell, the hardware defect must have been creeping in and has made a total mess of the inodes in all these partitions.
After booting into Knoppix, I can restore the volumes using pvscan, vgscan, lvscan, vgcfgrestore and vgchange. If I try and mount them: mayhem. So I try and check them, using fsck.ext3. All sorts of interesting nonsense, such as a completely empty inode 11 (the first inode) and then obviously from there on all else is pointless. I tried using debugfs, but the information on what to do with it is somewhat spurious.
P.S.: Tomorrow I will go and get myself a 16GB Flash Drive and then hopefully I will be able to dump the partitions one by one onto that drive and transfer the images onto a different computer for analysis and data recovery.
I have a drive with ext3 that was my old /home drive.When I moved to 9.04 I went with ext4 and just linked to my old home drive.My old ext3 drive is becoming unstable so I want to back it up.I have a 500gb ata drive (unfortunately not a sata drive) thatto wipe and put 10.04 on. I want to move my data from this backup driveIm going to back up to, to the new 10.04 until I get another hd as abackup drive.My question is, I know there is some issue between ext3 and 4 and I dontwant to get into a bind. View 3 Replies View RelatedI accidentally formatted a HDD when I meant to format a USB thumb drive. The HDD is a 250GB drive that had about 180GB of data in the EXT3 format. I was actually attempting to make a bootable USB thumb drive with TRK (Trinity Rescue Kit). Kind of funny/ironic to mess up a drive while trying to make a rescue disk. Anyway, as soon as I realized what had happened, I pulled the drive out of the computer to make sure I didn't do anything else stupid to it. I have been searching for some way to recover and haven't really found much. There are a lot of programs to get Windows data back, but I haven't seen anything specific on the EXT3 file system.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI wanted to upgrade from Intrepid to Jaunty. I opted for a format/reinstall as I figured upgrading usually sucks. To save my important data, I resized my partition (partition A), formatted the empty space with ext3 (now partition B), and moved the necessary files from partition A to partition B. Then I went through the install process and installed Jaunty on partition A, telling the installer to NOT format partition B. It gave a warning about the installer deleting system folders (var, usr, etc) but I figured it didn't apply. I was wrong.
So now partition B is "empty." I know it didn't format it, but I need to get those files off of there. I have created an image of partition B using ddrescue, but I don't know where to go from there. I tried using foremost, but it won't recover things like my virtual machines and completely nukes the original file structure I had. And I've tried mounting it (using sudo mount -t ext3 -o loop /home/user/recovery.img /mnt), but that doesn't seem to work. The mount command completes successfully, but nothing shows up in the folder I mounted it to.
I have accidentally removed vmware virtual disk, my host operating system is RHEL5.2 with ext3 file system, i have used photorec, magicresue and foremost but still no luck to recover the vmdk file. i have seen in foremost configuration file that there are some predefined files (ex- doc, pdf, jpg, avi, zip, etc),
1. is there any way to add vmdk file extension on that configuration file?
2. if yes how can i do ?
3. by adding vmdk on configuration file, can i specifically use recover option for vmdk?

View 1 Replies View Relatedfollowing problem. A friend phoned me in despair. Her Ubuntu didn't start any more - ASUS-Laptop switched on stops at a ramfs-prompt.
I started Puppy-Linux from DVD-Drive. Worked fine. But puppy can't mount her /dev/sda1 partition either. At least you can see that the partition is still there. Fsck stops with an error. May be the initial problem is a sort of bad hardware by which bad bytes were written to the hard drive. Hard drive and/or memory could be replaced but not the data.
At boot time, before entering Runlevel 3 the HDD will go mad when mounting tmpfs on /dev/shm...

I have 2 external drives that I'm using for movies and they're both formatted to fat32. The problem I'm experiencing now is that some of the high quality mkv files are not able to be moved to the drive because of fat32's limitations.
I'd like to convert to ext3 (or 4) and I wanted to check to see if I can do it without having to reformat and without loss of data.
I am facing a serious problem.I installed UBUNTU 10.04 and encrypted it during installation. I accidentally erased some of the necessary files from root folder. now the the OS is NOT booting.luckily i still have the encryption key i have some important documents in that drive (desktop folder).
PS: I have tried to run Live Ubuntu it shows the Root, but it does not enter any of the folder.
I have an external 3.5" USB 250Gb HDD which is showing symptoms of hardware problems (repeated /var/log/messages errors of "reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd"). This was originally plugged in to my NSLU2 running Debian Etch. I have just installed Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 to a spare Pentium-3M laptop and was hoping to copy the contents of this HDD to a fresh drive. However, I cannot mount it even read-only; mount -o ro /dev/sde3 /mnt/disk fails, and the /var/log/messages error is "recovery required on readonly filesystem", "write access unavailable, cannot proceed". I cannot understand why mounting a disk read-only should require write access. Following advice I googled elsewhere, I tried running mke2fs -n /dev/sde3 to try to list the alternative superblocks - but once again I got the error that the device was read-only. How can I go about accessing the data on this disk?

I usually repartition a disk by backing up, deleting the partitions, formatting them and repartition. I just did a 200 gig backup (so i am safe) and i want to join 2 (ext3) partition together, sdb1 (data4) and sdb5 (data5) into one big partition. Is there a way to do it without scraping the data in sdb5 (data5). It would save me from rewriting the data back to that new partition (200 gig is time consuming).

Som experience with Yum is scarce at the moment.Ran into problems with old transactions not finished and did what was advised: <g> checking for problems. That solved it. Great. So I decided to look into Yum options a little more.
So I told YUM to ERASE it. Shock and horror after a long wait and a looong list of packages being set to be erased it offered to erase 1208 packages!! Of course I denied politely first. There are lot of base-packages in that list, am I about to run the complete current setup? Leaving me in an unbootable / unusable state?

I was reading about ext3 feature and I have read about its journaling modes. I would like to ask what is the default journaling mode of ext3 fs in slackware(or is it in all distro using ext3)? I'll install slackware when my new pc arrive and the fs I will use will be ext3 and I like it to have data=journal mode for its journaling. I have read in some wiki how to set the journaling mode into data=journal mode.

I Tarred and GZipped most of the data on one 1Tb partition and stuck the archives on a second 1Tb partition on a separate disk. I then proceeded to format the first partition with NTFS (from Linux.) The only problem is that I completely forgot that I had a CD drive and formatted sdc1 instead of sdd1! I began doing a full NTFS format and after a minute or two I cancelled it and decided to do a quick format. I then realized my mistake. I managed to find a copy of the superblock and began trying to recover the disk. fsck -t ext3 recognized the partition as NTFS but I luckily didn't have fsck.ntfs installed so it didn't touch it. I managed to get it working with fsck.ext3 (with -b,-B and -y) fsck.ext3 didn't mind that it was an NTFS partition.
Roughly how long will this take? It's running from Knoppix within a virtual machine to a USB hard drive which is 100% full. Days? Being that for a few minutes I attempted a full format am I going to end up with a bunch of corrupted archives? If I do end up with file corruption can anyone recommend a way of recovering the data / sorting it out? Is it likely to be just a few old files that are corrupt (It's my understanding that filesystems like to keep files in the same area on the disk to minimize the amount of head travel.) This might just be wishful thinking but as the filesystem fills up will ext3 put the newer files towards the end of the disk? If so then I'm hoping that a full NTFS format starts at the beginning of the disk.
