I'm looking for a program that I can use to sync files between two computers. I have a laptop that travels around with me and I want a simple way of transferring the new/changed files to the desktop computer. I have two computers. One has UNR installed and the other Karmic. I back up my home folder from Karmic monthly. Is there any reason why I could not just copy the home folder from Karmic over the UNR home folder to synchronize my computers? I wasn't sure if UNR might not like this idea...

I have set up a Samba connection, so I can access the files from my laptop from the netbook, but I am wondering about software to make synchronization of particular folders in my home folder easier, especially since with my setup now, if I access my laptop's home folder from the netbook, I can see all the folders, including the hidden ones!

Desktop - Dendrite - Ubuntu 9.10
Laptop - Axon - Ubuntu 9.10
Netbook - Synapse - Eeebuntu 9.10
All with their own home drives. My media (music, films, photos etc) is kept on a separate (Vista) partition on my Desktop with symlinks from my home directory on Dendrite. Ideally, I'd have the /home directory synced across all 3 computers. I had been toying with the idea of a networked /home kept on an external HD plugged into synapse, but not sure how this would work out with Axon out of the reach of the network. I have dyndns set up and can access the home network over ssh, but obviously that's impractical (I assume) for a home drive.
Thoughts? Ideas? Pointers? I'm comfortable playing around with fstab, nfs and the terminal, but still very much a beginner.
I have Ubuntu on one machine and open SUSE on the other. Both connected with an ethernet cable to the same router. Both connect to the internet ok. I did manage to set up 2 machines both running Ubuntu with file sharing but now I have switched one to SUSE I seem to be getting into a mess. Ubuntu sees the SUSE machine but does not open any folders. SUS does NOT see the Ubutu machine. I have looked for a beginners guide to setting up file shaing with SUSE without success. (I like SUSE better because I can use my Audiophile sound card "out of the box")

I just got DSL and I'm new to networking. I have openSuse 11.4 on two computers plugged into a Belkin router. The internet connection to my ISP works from either computer. If I ping $HOSTNAME from either computer, the hostnames are different, but the IP address is the same which is that of my ISP. I only have the one router, but it has a bridging option. I don't know if it can do both bridging and routing simultaneously.

When working on a document, I tend to save every time I make a small change to the file. U1 tries to sync the file every time, but sometimes I resave new changes before the previous syncing is complete, resulting in conflicts with the cloud version of the file, sometimes downloading back an already outdated version of the file I'm working on (in addition to the various .u1conflict files created in my folder). I think a sensible behaviour would be to (be able to) wait until the file is closed to start the syncing

I know this has been asked a lot, everywhere and all the time. The main problem with this is that there is no clear, recent consensus on one best way to do this task in 2011 for Linux beginners (even depending on some parameters).
So in the spirit of the Stack Exchange websites, I want this not to be related to my particular situation, but more of a guide to others as well on how to transfer files between two Linux computers over a local network. I think a wiki would be useful for many.

I can't seem to figure out how to even share files between my laptop and desktop. They are both Ubuntu 9.10. I thought maybe samba was the way but couldn't figure it out. I was looking at the ssh that comes with Ubuntu and been trying to get it to work but don't know what I'm doing wrong. I type: ssh username@computername and it give me a little info. Don't know what I'm suppose to do then. I looked at the network folder on my laptop and it seem to see it but everytime I click on it ask for a password and I can't get in since I don't know the right password. I'm not sure if this is the best software to use or not. Just wanted something to look at and transfer from my desktop to my laptop and vice versa.

I had to leave rather suddenly (decision was Germany's, not fiancee's), and now am in the States again, but my files are still there. There are lots of things (mainly photos) on there, that I would like to have here. SOME stuff is on CD/DVD, but there is stuff that isn't.
Is there some way that I could access her computer and just copy files to mine?
(I picture two folders, one on hers, one on mine, and I just dragging an icon from one to the other - but I don't suppose anything's THAT easy...)
Naturally, her computer would have to be on, and I assume she could not be using it herself. Naturally also, I would get her permission first...
I assume that it would take a while, but if it were as simple as the icon thing I described above, then I could just go away and come back later. I assume something would be running to make sure that the destination file and source file were identical before proceeding to the next file.
[Before you suggest: why doesn't she just copy the files to DVD's and mail them to me? She is not all that computer saavy, I'm afraid, and trying to explain it all, including the exact folder names and such, Plus, how to use a DVD/CD burner and software... Plus translate it all into German... If I were rich enough, I could just go there and do what I needed, but that is not in the cards for the present. ]
IS there a way to copy stuff from her computer to mine?
I currently have two computers (one windows one linux) connected to each other via a crossover ethernet cable. Now, each computer can see each other and I can ping both ways. Also, I can ssh into the linux box from windows (putty, cygwin) as well as ssh into my windows machine from the linux box. Here's the problem: I can send files from my linux machine to my windows machine with no problems doing this:
scp this_file.txt windows_user@10.10.10.11:/cygdrive/c
however, I can't seem to send from windows (cygwin) to the linux machine. Here is what I see at cygwin x-term prompt:
$ scp that_file.txt jqweezy@10.10.10.10:/home/jqweezy
jqweezy@10.10.10.10's password:
Executing /etc/profile ...
Now, it seems like everything went fine. However when I look in /home/jqweezy that_file.txt is not there.
p.s. Don't know if this helps, but here is some extra info. Linux machine has only one NIC. Windows has two NICs, one NIC is setup for automatic network detection the other is setup for communication with linux machine via crossover cable (see above).

I use the setup for software development, so I am constantly switching between the two, so I need a way to quickly transfer files between the two. is there a program that can sync the music files. Let say that I update the info in one music file, then will the sync program notice the newer version and replace the old file with the new files on all the other computers.
I guess I would need a dedicated server for this where all changes are stored with some kind of version number of the music archive. Since not having a server would make everything (I guess) much more complicated. All computers would have to communicate with each other to check for a new version instead of only communicate with one computer (the server).

View 5 Replies View RelatedNetworking Problem Fedora 14 2.6.35.12-90.fc14.i686. I am trying to share files between 2 Fedora 14 computers , a desktop and a laptop, both located on my local DSL server. The laptop sees its public files and the public files folder on the desktop computer - looks fine. The desktop computer acts differently. Both systems show an entry of "unknown type" in the directory listing, for the public files directory. But whereas a right click on the directory entry on the laptop offers "open" the same operation on the desktop computer offers "open gedit". When I double click the entries on the laptop, entries appear on the main screen. If I double click the entries on the main screen, the directory contents are displayed. But, if I doubleclick the directory entries on the desktop computer 1- I get a black box that says there has been a crash in gvfs-1.6.6-1.fc14 and an error message box tells me Dbus error org.freedesktop.DBus.ERROR.NoReply: Message did not received a reply.

I have done it before, but don't remember all the things I had to go through to do it.
None of the instructional things that I have found has given me actual instructions that I understand.
Actually I have not even found instructions for using scp that I can understand. I have all ready done this in the past, yet with 30 years experience with computers, a bachelors degree in computer science, 20 years experience with linux I still cannot understand anything that I have found that tells how to do this.
I have two problems.
(1) the actual syntax of scp. None of the instructions I have found tell what anything is in their examples.
They might say:
scp blah blah yadda yadda zonk zonk.
They don't bother to tell me what blah blah is or what yadda yadda is, or what zonk zonk is.
(2) Also none of them tells what has to be set up in configuration files for things to work. For example one of my computers is named KING, and one is named QUEEN. There is probably something on computer KING that tells what QUEEN is. I don't know what this configuration file is, so of course I can't put in the entries that would do the job.
So where are some instructions that I might find for doing this copy of files over my network of two computers?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI got my somewhat older desktop running ubuntu 9.10 and I'm loving it so far. However a while ago while I was slightly intoxicated I boasted to my roommates that sharing files with this thing should be super easy, since it's linux and all that. Since then I've been trying to set up the desktop as a streaming media server, with no success. I found a pretty good guide on how to get Samba up and running on instructables. My laptop is part of a school domain. Since many of my roommates go to the same university, theirs are also part of that domain.
For those of you who aren't too familiar with Windows (anymore), your computer can either be part of a workgroup or a domain. A workgroup is intended for home networks and makes it easier to share files, which is what I'm trying to do, and what the guide calls for. I've illustrated the problem in the attached image. As you can see both computers connect to the same router. I don't think I really have to explain, but I just figured I should try to be as clear as possible.
My question to you is: is there any way that I can set up the ubuntu desktop, or samba, so that it can share files over the wireless network at home with the computers that run windows and are part of the school domain? I'm guessing I should somehow be able to access the desktop from another computer on the same network if I give it proper access. I just have no idea how to do it or where to look, since almost everything I encounter calls for putting the windows machine in a home workgroup.

I am able to ssh into both machines fine, so i know that works. I tried google for this but couldn't make much of the results.
I'm looking for a way to sync directories between two computers, in a "two-way" fashion. Basically, I have a laptop and I have a desktop, and I want to keep a particular directory synced between the two machines. The easiest thing would be to have some kind of networked filesystem, but obviously this won't work because the laptop may or may not be connected to the internet at any moment. At any time I might be editing files on the desktop or on the laptop, and when the laptop is connected to the internet, I'd like all files on both machines to be synced to their most recent versions.
I thought I could do this with rsync but now that I've looked into a bit more it seems like it works only for "one-way" syncing. In other words files are synced from a server to a client or vice versa, but not both at once. First of all, am I right about that? And second, is there a program that will do what I want to do? OK, I guess you could do it with some SVN kind of thing but that seems like overkill. I guess if there's nothing out there it shouldn't be too hard to write a script myself to do it.
I don't know if this is the right place to ask, but has anyone had any success in syncing and android phone to KDE PIM?I'm just looking for a new phone and was wondering if this would work. I'm mostly after being able to sync Kontact and the Calender.
