View 4 RepliesI have openSUSE 11.2 installed on my PC, the install went well and was quite pleased with the OS. Howeve, because I only had a small 40Gb hard-drive I decided to buy a new Western Digital Green 1Tb SATA drive for storing my music etc.Now this is where I have run into difficulty. I can't get the OS to see the new drive, I did a search and found some instructions on how to format, mount, setup the 2nd drive but I either missed something or I just didn't do it correctly. In the end I could see the drive under Nautilus and that was it.
I can't write to it because it says I don't have permission? I can't seem to make new directories, most likely because I don't have permission. If needs be I will be willing to go back to the beginning and start installing the drive again. I don't mean to beliitle the Linux OS and users but using Windows$ all my life (I'm 49) I find it a lot easier, but I am willing to learn this new OS (for me that is).
I installed VLC on SuSe 11.0 but it isnt playing .avi movies, it gives this error but plays soung no video "No suitable decoder module:VLC does not support the audio or video format "mp4v". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this."I have tried the options for dowloading divx codecs completed successfully but "sudo apt-get update" gives an error "bash apt-get". commamnd not found.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWhat would be the preferred method to establish a remote desktop session from one 11.2 machine to another 11.2 machine in the same location? No firewalls, local connection only. I've looked at VNC, RDP with xrdp, have not been able to establish a session to desktop. I would rather not use desktop sharing if possible, don't want invitations involved. Want something similar to hitting from Windows with VNC3and taking over the established desktop session. This is in my house, no security risks involved

When I try to boot from the DVD it just logs in to Win2008 though boot from CD/DVD is enabled in the boot sequence. So i tried to mount the ISO and run from Windows ! BUT I get an error before installation starts telling that Win2008 R2 is not supported in open suse installer! Is there anything I can do to overcome this and install/retain both OS? In fact I am even trying to c hange my win2008 from R2 to Enterprise to see if I can overcome the problem!

I need some assistance in trying to format a USB hard drive to vfat format but can't seem to do so. I am currently using RHEL 5.3. I have tried the following commands and they all come back as "command not found"
mke2fs vfat /dev/sc1
fdisk vfat /dev/sdc1
mkfs.vfat /dev/sdc1
What am I doing incorrectly?? Can someone please point me in the right direction??
I need to format a USB pen drive. Reason is I have a Foxsat TV receiver/recorder. In Fat format it will only download programs less than 4GB. Apperently I have been told on a forum and have read it on the company site that if I have Linux I can format it to Extension 3. This will enable me to load of the recorder my programs. I am not sure how this is done.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty weird problem, which is that I can't format any partitions anymore.
It started when my laptop suddenly froze and I killed it (I just ran FF, IRC client, Kopete, ... and I think the last thing I did was plugging in a USB drive). When I wanted to boot the machine again it gave me a lot of errors that the root and the home partitions are both corrupted.
Repairing the system with the DVD didn't help at all and finally I removed all the partitions to reinstall the whole system.
During the installation it can create the partitions, but it can't format them with ext4.
I tried to format the partitions with a live CD and YaST Partioner and the same problem showed up code...
the time format i have used is %m:%d:%Y:%H:%M:%S eg- 06:21:10:13:29:18 and i want to convert it to 2010-06-21 13:29:18..

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was recently forced to do a reinstall of OpenSUSE. As part of that I backed up the folders I needed to keep. The installation however didn't format the 'Home' partition though. At first I thought it was nice, but I've run into trouble with a program I most definately need to get working. So my plan is to re-install yet again.
how to make the install format the root partition I think it is, and the 'home' partition, so I can start fresh.
To further complicate things My laptop (which this is happening on) is dual booting between OpenSUSE and Windows 7. It is VERY important that the windows partitions remain.
For some time Ihave copied my email folders in .mbox format to files which I then can save to cd. Unfortunately, these files are one (very) large concatenation of email text+attachments which are very inconvenient when searching for a lost email. Question:how to backup emails from within Kmail? And, yes, I did read the Kmail manual cover-to-cover and found nothing relevant.

I just added a 2nd SATA drive to my openSuse 11.2 desktop. What do I do now to partition and format? I want to partition some of the new drive for linux, and leave some of it unpartitioned for Windows (I dual boot). I want to leave my existing 1st drive as is. What tool do I use? How do I proceed?
View 4 Replies View RelatedRan into something weird. I was trying to watch a .mkv file in 720p format last night in VLC. Now, for about 10 minutes everything is fine and then the sound just stops. Video play is fine, but audio just cuts out. These hasn't happened with anything else other than this .mkv file. Would the fact I'm running gnome 3 using the open source drivers on my ati 5850 have anything to do with this? Or maybe something else? Anyone run into an issue like this?
View 6 Replies View RelatedCan I ask for some advice in converting a video (from my phone) which is a 3gp file into something more universal. I use audokonverter for audio files and this gives me a menu right-click option to convert a song from (say) wav to mp3. Is there an equivalent for videos? I am using opensuse 11.4 64 bit and have mplayer, xine and vlc installed plus the necessary codecs. Or is it simpler to use ffmpeg in a c/l environment
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn inspection I find that my collection of video files is a mixture of .flv and .mp4 formats. The latter play OK on my A110 network media player but the latter do not. There is no sound from either but I think that is another problem as VLC works well on all of them.
My question assuming I cannot get the media player to play .flv files is should I convert to mp4 and will the HD files suffer as a result? If it is OK to convert, which program to use. My system is openSUSE 11.4 with KDE desktop.
Updated to CUPS 1.4.3 from printing repository and was getting this while page test printing:
Code:
/usr/bin/lp: Unsupported format 'application/postscript'!
Downgraded to 1.3.11 and it was solved.

For a while now, I have been using an older version of gparted (0.4.5) from an older bootable Linux disk to format my hard drives. The version included with Suse 11.4 (0.8.0) has given me a puzzle. I tend to create a number of partitions (3 primary, an extended, and a number of logical) on my disks. For some reason, version 0.8.0 seems to requires 1 mb of space between each partition, and 2-3mb of space at the end of the drive. With the older gparted, I could create partitions with no unused disk allocation. Is there some reason for this new behavior? Is there some way to format a drive with the newer gparted without unused space? I realize that 10-15mb of disk is fairly small, but I have this dislike of wasted space. The drives being formatted are SATA drives in the range of 250gb -750gb.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have been dual-booting Vista and openSUSE 11.2 until my SUSE install is fully functional and now and I want rid of Vista and to reclaim the space for Linux.

sda2 and sda3 are the Vista partitions. sda2 is a recovery partition and sda3 is the main partition. All data is safely copied from sda3 and now I want to reformat them for SUSE. I not bothered about partition resizing i.e. I am happy to just have the sda2/sda3 space available to SUSE and mount them somewhere.
1) Do I need to do anything about the boot table first or can I just reformat sda2 & sda3?
2) How should I format sda2/sda3? I'm guessing I need to unmount them and then format. Should I use ext4 or something else? Which command/tool should I use?
I have my original test version of sled11 which I installed when it was first released. I managed to install the required files for multimedia formats and everything works fine. The system has updated as updates have been released via the evaluation update code quite happily. I liked it and decided to get a sled11 license and install on my main workstation. About a month has passed since the test install and my fresh licensed install and I accepted all the updates on install. When I install the multimedia apps, only kaffeine will read multimedia dvds. Nautilus, brasero and totem say it is a restricted format and refuse to read it. What to look for?
