OpenSUSE :: Running Multiple VMs For Learning Administration

Mar 9, 2010

I'm currently going through, what is essentially a Linux+ course. I don't like any of the exercises in the book, as it's outdated and doesn't really thoroughly teach how to implement a lot of stuff. Is there a program or suite of programs out there where I can create a few VM's with their own IP's, users, files systems, etc. so I can setup up Samba, NFS, NIS, etc.?

Aug 6, 2010

Sometimes I connect to my Debian box from another computer (using SSH on Cygwin or Linux), and once ina while I want to run some console apps. And sometimes some of these apps might complain about "another intance, Error: an instance of newsbeuter is already running (PID: 2496)". Is there a work around for this issue at all(without killing the original instance") ? The reason I do not want to kill the app because there might be 2 users connected to the same machine that might be using the same app.

OpenSUSE :: Remote Administration Suse11.2 Broken?

Dec 10, 2009

I am having some trouble getting a VNC session to a new OpenSuse 11.2 32bit machine I have just installed.Fresh off the DVD, tried under KDE4 and Gnome with the same result (each time a fresh install). In YAST, I enabled remote administration, open the firewall ports, and then try and connect from remote client (in this case I have tried RealVNC from windows, and krdc from a Suse 10.x client and via HTTP) all result in the same blank black screen (http does get an X cursor echoed on the screen)

OpenSUSE Network :: Setting Up The Remote Administration?

Aug 19, 2010

I can't seem to get Remote Administration (vnc) working for the life of me. I tried the ip4/ip6 fix and every other work around I could find. I simply can't figure things out. I can't say I'm new to Linux but I can say that I am quite new to openSuse and the RPM world in general. My actual error isn't much of an error but that of the vnc window just being a black window that eventually times out.

As of now I access and configure the box vis ssh.I'm using:

openSuse 11.3
Gnome Desktop
Installed from gnome live CD

Ubuntu :: Partitioning For Running Multiple Distros?

Sep 15, 2010

I'm interested in testing Maverick, (or the next release, or the one after that) but always run into a problem with testing that runs alone the lines of.I have my current install (10.04) I have two partitions, / and /home, it works well.As soon as I add a new version it seems to be recommended NOT to have them both point to the same /home partition, the problem is, if I don't do that I don't have all my files, and it's a pain in the rear to setup. So what I was thinking is to have three basic partitions,

/
/home (for config files, and true HOME files)
/data (for all my actual data)

Create links from say /home/james/documents to link to /data/documents that way I can get to my documents. This way if I add a new version I can setup either the same (two partitions, / and /home and point /home/xyz/documents to /data/documents) or keep it slightly simpler for testing, just have one partition and repoint /home/xyz/documents to /data/documents.The main one I can think of would be permissions for files/folders?

Software :: Running Multiple Instances Of Audacious?

Dec 7, 2010

I need to run two instances (i.e run the program twice, with two separate windows) of Audacious. This is for a play where I need to have music and sound effects going at the same time. I could do this while running Fedora 13, but after upgrading to 14 the audacious package was updated and now can't do this. My attempts at downgrading have been unsuccessful, and I need the audio done by tonight (the last rehearsal). So... am I up the river without a boat, or is there a fast solution? I'm open to anything, as long as the music player has advanced controls (play, pause, stop, fast forward, rewind, forwards track, backwards track) and can have two instances running at the same time.

General :: Running Multiple Commands Remotely Via SSH In A Script?

Dec 18, 2009

In a script I am writing I am trying to add logic so that the script can figure out if a remote server uses rpm or dpkg and then run the appropriate command to print a list of installed packages. This works locally, but I need to get it to work through SSH and I have no idea how to do that. The relevant portion of the script is below. It would also be nice to find a way to not need the full path to the executables but I'm not real concerned about that.So anyone know how to make this code work via SSH?

Code:
if [ -x /usr/bin/dpkg ]; then
dpkg --get-selections

General :: Command Running Multiple Jobs On Servers

Jul 26, 2010

How to submit multiple jobs onto a Linux server. The only way I know to submit and run a job on a server is using qsub, and verifying the status of the job using qstat. I usually run my scripts using qsub -cwd so that I can run it on my own directory (instead of having the results sent to a scratch folder).

1. However, assuming qsub/msub are not available, is there another way to do it? What commands can I use instead?
2. I know that some jobs can run in the background, is that an alternative? How do I do it? And would I still be able to check the status of the job or delete it?

General :: Bash_history File And Running Bash On Multiple Windows?

May 5, 2011

Despite the history file is unique (~/.bash_history) I see that the multiple bash processes run on different windows are not all updating that file. I presume that the bash is not taking into account this possibility (multiple bashes on multiple windows) and writes thus the history file in a simple straightforward way. This would mean that a number of history entries are lost. I've tried to find information but had no luck so far.

Ubuntu Servers :: Running Multiple Websites On Single Server - VirtualHost

Aug 25, 2010

I currently am running 10.04.1 and have successfully setup my home web server to run a single website. My current settings are:

-I have registered the domain name annarrankings.com through godaddy
-A record is - host = @ and points to = 71.114.220.3
-CName is - host = www and points to = @
-on my server I have the site running in /var/www

I've done some research and found that to run multiple websites I need to setup VirtualHost.

-So I created a folder /var/www/annarrankings.com and moved my site to that folder

-Edited Apache2.conf to add the following line

-I then went to /etc/apache2/sites-enabled and copied the default file to a new file called annarrankings.com. Here's the annarrankings.com file after I edited it

-I then created a link in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to the annarrankings.com file in /etc/apache2/sites-available

-Next I editied /etc/hosts

-When i went to enable the site using a2ensite annarrankings.com I got the following

I figured this was ok since I had already created a symbolic link earlier (a result of trying to following multiple tutorials and ..... videos at once) so I reloaded apache2. I created an index.html file in /var/www/ just for testing purposes and when I load www.annarrankings.com I get the file located in /var/www/ instead of the website located in /var/www/annarrankings.com Do I need to change my A record or CName in godaddy or did I just do this completely wrong?

Ubuntu :: Pointers To Learning Scripting?

Apr 25, 2011

I have a project for my computer class, and I was a bit ambitious with my ideas and am wondering if I made a smart choice. I need to learn sooner or later anyway! I'm a beginner when it comes to scripting but I'd like to learn more advanced stuff. When I say basic I really mean basic among all basic. To give you an idea I only know some simple HTML and Python. The idea I proposed for my project goes as follows:

The challenge we were given is to create a spreadsheet of data from a website given to us. Points are given for creativity and simplicity in how we go about doing this. After taking a look at the site (or rather, html files given to us), and with having dabbled with Python before, I came up with what I thought was a pretty good idea. The pages of the "site" are just numbers. They go from 001-117 .html in terms of filenames. Their source code has some sort of table set up, and the information we are pulling off are easily found by the tags that precede them (the info, btw are the periodic elements).

The tags are pretty obvious, and state pretty much what they are labeling. My python knowledge is almost nonexistent but I figured that would be something Python would be capable of. Why do I post this here? I'm relatively new to Ubuntu too but keep hearing about bash scripts and such. Would this be even better? (Perhaps it's silly but I'd like to use Ubuntu to accomplish this)

Or is there an even better scripting method/language I should be using? Could anyone give me some pointers in how I could accomplish this? I'm really hoping to learn a lot from my first "real" scripting experience!
