OpenSUSE Network :: Yast Says No (or Very Slow) Internet But Firefox Contradicts

Mar 18, 2011

I just installed openSuse11.4 KDE in dual boot with Win7. I have observed that Firefox can open websites but in contrast to this, whenever I try to install rekonq web browser (thats because I find Firefox the slowest browser presently available on earth), Yast says about 593 MB of data to be downloaded and installed. It starts with 3.2 KB/s (or even lesser) speed and further decreases to about 1.3KB/s speed and then ... just stops there (waited for 2-3 hours for downloading just 4-5 MB of data).

Fedora Hardware :: Internet And Network - Really Slow Loading Of Pages

May 31, 2011

I recently bought my laptop (Fujitsu nh540) and installed FC14 on it. I have Integrated WLAN Atheros HB97 (IEEE 802.11b/g/n) (more info here about the config) running on: 2.6.35.13-91.fc14.i686.PAE

Since I installed FC I've had problems with the internet. In any browser pages load very slow, it looks like the browser waits some seconds, sometimes even 1-2 minutes until it actually starts to load the page.

Second thing I saw is that when it boots I keep getting:
Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable? [FAILED]
But I have WiFi internet. I am not using a wired internet connection.

I installed madwifi driver (compiled it, after reading some info on google and it seems it should be good for my network) and it seems it's a bit better, but I still have to wait some seconds until it starts loading pages. I tried different browsers, it makes no difference. On my other 2 laptops I have no problems, the internet works fine, same goes for my android mobile phone. Another "nice" problem I noticed is that when compiz is enabled I see incoming video on skype black and the same black screen for some movies with some programs. After disablig compiz, all works for video.

After this, says that this may be caused by blocked cookies... the problem is with my firefox, cause konqueror is working ok!

OpenSUSE Install :: Network Speed Slow In OpenSUSE 11.3?

Sep 10, 2010

Does anyone know how to revert network speeds to those attained with openSUSE11.2-64? On openSUSE11.2-64 the reported network download speed was,

max : 420 kB/s
ave : ~ 200 kB/s

After upgrade to openSUSE 11.3-64 the figures dropped to about 25% of the previous values. After upgrade to KDE 4.5 and plasmoid-networkmanagement the initial values did not change but the average value dropped after about 30 seconds to ~ 15 kB/s. Approach so far:

1. The motherboard's (A780GM-LE) build in LAN (Realtek RLT8111DL) was originally detected by openSUSE 11.3 as the Realtek RLT8169 and kernel module r8169 installed. This was replaced by the latest module r8168-8.019.00 from Realtek.

2. After kernel update to Linux 2.6.34.4-0.1-desktop x86_64 the plasmoid-networkmanagement was replace by NetworkManager-kde4. This improved flow with,

max : 140 kB/s
ave : ~ 80 kB/s

OpenSUSE :: FireFox Slow Loading And Browsing

Aug 27, 2010

On my computer, I'm using 11.3, KDE 4.4.4 and Firefox 3.6.8. Firefox is so s...l...o...w..... It's slow loading and it's slow browsing. Konqueror takes 1, maybe 2 seconds to load, and another second to load the home page. Firefox takes a good 30 seconds to load. The only message I get when loading from a terminal is about not using a shared database. I don't hear the disk churning like it would with a fragmented disk.

I can't believe everyone is having this response, the hue and cry would be enormous! Anything to try? Should I try loading another browser? I tried Opera on 11.2 and didn't really like it, had problems with a lot of content. What about Sea Monkey (Gad, I HATE words with monkey in them!) Konqueror won't show a lot of videos and I have problems using the back and forward buttons. I'll wait for fixes but in the meantime.

OpenSUSE :: Fix For Firefox Acting Slow On Page Look Ups?

Mar 25, 2011

On my system Firefox 4 seemed to be taking its sweet time "looking up" addresses, but when it found the page it blazed on the render. I poked around on the net and found a few suggestions to speed up the "look up". So I thought I would share... I aimed for the fewest changes, so not to break too many things or make a big mess. (Warning moving and changing things that you don't know about, in the about:config can goof up Firefox so double check your settings) place about:config in the address bar and hit enter

You should get a really long list of things

In the search bar put
network.dns.disableIPv6

My default value was set to false, go ahead and set it to true. Right click and Toggle. Clear out the search bar where network.dns.disableIPv6 was, and put in network.http.pipelining You should have three listings Right click on network.http.pipelining and Toggle so "true" shows for the value. Next, right click on network.http.pipelining.maxrequests and Modify, a box will pop up, replace the default 4 with 8. Close the about:config

Now test your Forefox performance. These three small changes, made a world of difference for me. Its now comparably fast as chromium. If you disagree with what I did, or want to let me know of any other "safe" speedups let me know. PS. If you don't see any improvements performance-wise or your from the future and do use IPv6, it would be best to go and take these settings back to the default Firefox settings.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: 11.4 - Internet Very Slow On Firefox

May 17, 2011

When I had OpenSuSE 11.3 installed originally, I never had any slow internet connection until I erased the hard drive and went to 11.4. This is what my configuration looks like on /usr/sbin/iwconfig:

Cell 01 - Address: AA:AA:BA:BA:AB:BB
Channel:11
Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11)
Quality=70/70 Signal level=-37 dBm
Encryption key: on
ESSID:"housewifiZZZZ" .....

The device I am using is a D-Link DWA-160 which is running the ar9170usb driver (and did on the previous version)

These are the steps I did:
Disable IPv6 from the global tab on Network Settings.
Set DHCP version 4 only in dynamic address in address tab.
Used the anti-IPv6 switches in firefox making these changes
Network.dns.disableIPv6 change from false to true
Network.http.pipelining change from false to true
Network.http.pipelining.maxrequests change from 4 to 8
Added ipv6.disable=1 in DEFAULT_APPEND in Bootloader
(I couldn't find bootloader _APPENDS that was stated in another forum)

Switched from ifup to NetworkManager for Network Setup Method. Reinstalled OpenSuSE 11.4 with Ubuntu 11.04 (to see if it was OS issue) and it still didn't work, so I switched back to OpenSuSE 11.4. Is there anything I did wrong or do I need to do anything additional?

Fedora Installation :: FC14 Very Slow Opening Website Pages?

I just installed FC14 on 2 different PCs. It takes over 40 seconds for either of them to open some webpages, ie amazons home page. It is not my internet connection. I can open the same webpage on both my Windows PCs in less than 5 seconds. I was using FC9 up until 1 month ago, and I believe it took about 15 seconds to open amazon, but I never actually timed it. I spend many hours a day on the internet and have used FC for many years. I have been very happy with it. Until now. My PCs are 1.8GHZ single processor and 2.4GHZ dual processor. Do I have to revert back to FC9 to fix this, or use a different distro?

Ubuntu Networking :: Lucid Wireless - Web Pages Consistently Slow To Load

Performed clean install of 10.04 (lucid) onto a brand new hard drive (July 2010) - fwcutter driver. NO issues with wireless in 10.04 (lucid) until a few days ago, when. my laptop shutdown because the battery died and I safe-upgraded to 2.6.32-24-generic. Currently I have chronic wireless connectivity issues - slow to non-existent. Ping tests (ping -c6 google.com or ping -c6 4.2.2.1) sometimes reveal 0% loss, sometimes 100% loss, sometimes "unknown host" - within 5 minutes of each other. Regardless of ping results, web pages are consistently slow to load. Skype will also cut out from time to time as the wireless connection vacillates. I have a MacBook Pro which I am using as my (wireless and consistently well-connected) control - and from which I am currently forced to draft this note.

Ubuntu :: Firefox Can't Load Web Pages?

May 17, 2010

Out of no where Firefox has just decided to not load web pages anymore. I've restarted my router, restarted my wifi card, restarted my computer, *completly* uninstalled Firefox then reinstalled it, still no luck at all. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? I'm stuck using Google Chrome now, I like it but I need the Add-Ons FireFox has (AdBlock Plus, Xmarks, DownThemAll, etc.)

Here are my specs:
Ubuntu 10.04 64bit
Acer Aspire 3680
Intel Celeron M 1.6GHz Single Core
1GiB RAM
40GiB Hard Drive

Basically all it does is sit there saying "Connecting to www.google.com..." for like 15seconds then gives me one of two pages, "The connection has timed out - The server at www.google.com is taking too long to respond." or "Unable to connect - Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at www.google.com."Google Chrome, Skype, Ubuntu's built in messenger, System Update, and so on connect just fine to the internet.

Ubuntu :: Firefox 3.5 In 9.10 - Web Pages Not Always Displaying?

Nov 14, 2009

Whilst I like Ubuntu as an operating system and generally am fine with Firefox, could anyone explain why I sometimes get errors in trying to get through to various web pages. I don't get the same errors in IE8. As an example, my telephone billing provider; I can login on both IE8 and Firefox and get into all the screens in IE8 but not always in Firefox as happened to me 30 mins ago (I think the version installed is 3.5 on Ubuntu 9.10). There is a message at the bottom of the screen showing that Firefox is trying to connect to a sub page, but it just can't display. Is there anything that I can do to resolve this and is it an encryption issue? This isn't the first time I've had issues with Firefox. In Ubuntu 9.04 the screen used to sometimes go fuzzy when I used the firefox version there.

OpenSUSE Network :: Internet Connection Slow In Certain Applications?

May 17, 2011

I have recently moved countries and have finally got my internet connected today after a lengthy wait. I have a pretty fast connection - it's a fibre connection at approx 100Mbps Between my onu (modem) & computer (Lenovo SL510) I have a cisco wrt120N wireless router. I'm using Opensuse 11.3 (also dual boot with Win7)

My problem is . . . When I enter url in firefox (4) I get the message "looking up www. . ." for approx 5 to 15 seconds before anything starts to load. I also have the same behaviour in konqueror, firefox and yast software manager.

If I use Google Chrome the pages load instantly. Even never before visited pages.

A typical webpage such as Stuff.co.nz - Latest New Zealand News & World News, Sports News & NZ Weather Forecasts takes approx 20 to thirty secs to load in firefox and 3 seconds in Chrome. I can see the same behaviour always whether Chrome used first or firefox used first - so cache does not appear to be the issue.

If I boot into Win7 - websites load instantly there also.

I have updated to the latest wireless drivers for my system - but the behaviour is also evident if I attach a lan cable.

Here is a little info

Code:
/sbin/ifconfig

OpenSUSE Network :: Browsing Secure Sites Is Very Slow

May 21, 2011

I've recently installed openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit) on my system and am experiencing severe performance issues with websites using https (any site using https). Page loads over https take anywhere between 30 seconds to 2 minutes. It's the same issue posted here Secure sites load slow or not at all -- there was no confirmed solution.

- My router/hardware configuration has not changed in a long time and I've run Ubuntu, Arch Linux, and Windows XP on the same machine within the last year and have not had any issues.
- I also have a laptop running Arch Linux (kernel 2.6.38) and this problem does not occur using Firefox 4 or Chrome. To add to the madness this problem occurs while running Firefox 4 inside a Windows 7 guest via virtual box, but NOT while running IE 8 inside the same guest.
- This issue occurs using Firefox 4, Chromium, Opera, Konqueror, and Arora.
- I've disabled ipv6 in Firefox via about:config.
- I've disabled ipv6 in yast and have attempted to use both the "ifup" and "networkmanager" options.
- I am not using a proxy server.
- I've attempted the fix posted in the Ubuntu forums for a similar problem [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Banking Site is very slow.
