Yesterday I got the wireless up in running in my Macbook Pro 4,1 but still have no sound, the keyboard isn't fully supported (volume controls, brightness, ect.) and I haven't been able to get the eye-candy to work. I'm running openSUSE 11.2, and I've already installed the nVidia proprietary drivers, but every time I turn on desktop effects it turns it off as soon as I close the dialog box.

I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
View 4 Replies View Relatedi just installed opensuse 11.3 (after being on Mint for couple of years) and really impressed with stability compared to latest Mint 9/Ubuntu10.04.the only issue I have now is I can't turn on desktop effects neither in KDE nor in Gnome.In gnome i can't change compiz seetings at all - the windows freezes after i try to click on 'Enable desktop effects', and that's it. It worked fairly well in ubuntu though.

I could enable desktop effects.Now I have tried update in that live session.. and when gone to that software application it asked and I downloaded 130Mb of software.flash player..etc... but I still did not have desktop effects... So my question is can it be done with my configuration... Works fine in ubuntu with Open drivers (radeon)...I would really like to make it possible on live CD.. because I dont wanna install and then see that I can not enable it...I know that most driver manipulations need restart.. so live session can not do that...But can you say if I could even make it happen on Raden X600? Now every time I try to login, the screen goes black & crashes back to the login screen again. i have installed the new 11.2 OS, every thing went well until i switched on the desktop effect, when i clicked the apply button the whole system freezed, i had to manually switch of the system and re-started. everything went well until the username and password was entered, at the time of the progress bar the system dint respond, but the curser was moving but very slow moment was observed. i tried to repair the system with the repair system option, i tried repairing the file system i got the following error after pressing the help button

I'm getting tired of it. I wouldn't have removed the driver except that I think it was effecting my booting because I was booting to a blank screen (and it wasn't my ram)

Im using an Asus 51vx with Nvidia Geforece GTX 260m and the proprietary drivers kind of suck. My resolutions (although set correctly) are distorting pictures, my dual monitors is being funky and unpredictable... etc. Everything works great without the drivers installed except i cant enable advanced desktop features so my awn looks good . I know its just cosmetics, but i love my cosmetics, and they took a loooong time to get perfect.

I just installed Fedora 11, and am trying to install my video card drivers. I have an Nvidia geforce gtx 260m. So far I have installed both the kmod-nvidia and akmod-nvidia packages, and I still cannot enable desktop effects. After i installed the akmod package, I sometimes see the nvidia logo for a split second when I log out, but my drivers are still not correctly installed.

okay, here are the details: can't play any audio with amarok when desktop effects are enabled because the minute a window is moved, it will distort the audio. even when disabling desktop effects, some applications still cause this. can't play videos videos even with desktop effects disabled because of the same reason.
i just switched from ubuntu and when i ran version 11.04, i had to disable kms to do anything. i tried on opensuse 11.4 and the audio was flawless but the gfx went all to hell.
Problem summary:
Error - "Oh no! Something has gone wrong." and "A problem has occurred and the system can't recover. Please log out and try again."
How to get back to original nouveau driver after failed nvidia driver install?
What probably happened was a wrong nVidia driver install from the repository.. Because never had any problems earlier, but after I installed some nVidia packages, I get this error.
I already tried to remove nvidia driver by
# aptitude purge nvidia-kernel-dkms nvidia-glx
It was successful.
Then I reinstalled Xorg Nouveau driver and all its denpendencies by
# aptitude install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
It was also successful.
But problem still occurs..
I'm running 10.10 on an amd64 bit desktop which, until recent problems with the screen, had a RadeonX700 256 card.
The diagnosis of that problem was video ram going awol.
I have now purchased a gt220 1G card, plugged it in and as I expected, it only gave me a resolution of 800x600 or400x300, not good for the Flatron L225WS screen that is connected(only has a vga connection).
Looking for a driver and help with the installation, I found [url], with instructions which I tried following.
I ran update manager on the desktop, then followed the link to the nividea drivers at ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/190.42/ which gives several packages.
I had a quick read through the Read Me file, and clicked on the first package to download it, but (and I spotted the clue in the extension - ".run") instead of downloading, it gave me a cl type page.
I just updated to new 2.6.38-18 kernel and headers. Now the latest Ati 11.2 driver wont install completely and I cannot get any X. So I removed the ati drivers to use the opensuse drivers but kde wont start now (dont know what the issue is.. maybe someone can poitn me out the the correct log file to look for errors).. I am using gnome now. Anyone knows how to get ground this and install ati drivers.

Then I noticed that it's not working well due to an improper installation (didn't use the manual that you provided here). So I uninstalled the driver. Then, after reboot, instead of a regular desktop, I get a CLI and I'm requested to enter my login information. But in the boot menu, if I enter to the failsafe option, then everything works fine. How can I change the CLI to the regular desktop?

View 1 Replies View RelatedMy new machine with a fresh install of Lucid boots up and displays the standard gdm login screen showing the list of users which looks fine. After you hover over a name or other option menus on the display, the pop-up or screen change is rendered poorly. It very slowly fixes itself over time. After I login everything works just fine even with the extra "desktop effects" I recently discovered that if I set the desktop effects to none, I get the same effect on my desktop. I've attached a screen capture to illustrate what I see but find hard to describe. The little horizontal bars will gradually be fixed over a minute or so. Dragging the window around smears that effect around the screen. I've been sniffing around the web off and on for a couple months now but haven't found anything that sounds similar.
Now for some hopefully helpful configuration data: This system is based on an Asus M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 motherboard with integrated ATI radeon video, and a 6 core processor. Lucid 32bit.

I have new hardware and I'm doing a dual boot, hoping that Ubuntu will be my primary OS, but I'm having trouble ringing it out. I installed Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 and in the past with an old machine I could turn on visual effects. With this machine, when I try to, it says it's looking for a driver, blinks a bit and then comes back with a message saying "Desktop visual effects cannot be enabled."
I assume that I don't have the nVidia driver loaded. When I go to Hardware Drivers, it says "No proprietary drivers are in use on this system." In synaptic, the latest driver does not show up. I followed the instructions on this site that someone put up which required adding some lines to the "Blacklist" then purging old drivers. It said to expect an error and what to do then, but I never got the error. When I tried to do the rest of the commands anyway, nothing seemed to happen. One of the steps was to download the latest driver, which I did. It was a .run file...........

Last night I was playing around with Desktop Effects and set the composting engine to Xrender, it was openGL. And things started to slow down tremendously. There is now lag on Alt+F1, lag when mousing over hidden taskbar, lag when moving windows, etc. I was trying to get rid of a trail of images when moving windows around. I created more problems. Things got even better when I tried to change back to openGL:
"Failed to activate desktop effects using the given configuration options. Setting will be reverted back to previous values. Check your X configuration. You may also consider changing advancde options, especially changing the composting type." The same thing happens when I click on "Default", the default options disable desktop effects.
I've a question about KDE desktop effects. How do I directly enable KDE desktop effects in KDE? Now I have to enable Gnome desktop effects, then KDE desktop effects will be enabled. When I select "enable desktop effects" and press "OK" in KDE, it will tell me "... X configuration ..." something. What the hell is that? I never met this problem in Gnome. Is it a KDE's bug?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm getting this weird behavior when I have Desktop Effects enabled. When it is on, it's like there are two or three vertical and horizontal lines running across my screen that distort any of certain font characters that are under them. In some cases these characters are trimmed slightly, in others they have an odd skew to them, and in still others the letters are completely removed/missing/invisible. With Desktop Effects disabled, everything appears as normal. I have attached a screenshot in which you can see there are at least three letters missing from the left side (Desktop Effects enabled) and not from the right side (Desktop Effects disabled). There is a missing 'l,' a trimmed 't,' and a distorted 'p.' I'm on a one-week-old 11.4 install with nVidia drivers installed from that repo.
As far as I can tell, Desktop Effects works with few other issues, although there are some aggravating ones (having to click task tray items multiple times to get a response, multiple windows highlighted in the menu bar as though they all had focus, etc) that I will look into once I get this one key issue taken care of.If any other diagnostic information might be useful, please let me know and I will provide ASAP.
I am Running opensuse 11.4 (64 bit) KDE desktop with all the updates & proprietary ATI driver installed. My processor is Athlon II X2 250 & motherboard is gigabyte MA785GPM-UD2H. I have 4 GB (2 +2) of DDR 2 RAM installed. I have turned off automatic updating & usually update my machine once a week. But just couple of days ago I had just updated my system and KDE desktop effects stopped working!!

When I first installed OpenSuse, the sound and video drivers worked fine. But now, even after a new install and some basic driver-installation procedures, I can't get either one to work properly: I can't enable desktop effects (and when I try, metacity window decorations become invisible), and sound doesn't play through my headphones. I know the headphones are fine because they work on my Sansa, and I know general sound is fine because sounds work when I just use my laptop's speakers, but both combined somehow simply don't work.
