OpenSUSE Install :: "write" Access For Data Stored In NTFS?

Jun 20, 2010

I have acces to NTFS partitions from OpenSuse 11.2, and read data, yet I cannot write changes of it. I tryed to change "rw" attributes using "sudo", and was not possible. Even the windows version I had is 7, the NTFS partition I want to access for writing, comes from a previous XP install. Is there a way to have "write" access for data stored in NTFS? I recall an install I had on a laptop with Windows XP and Ubuntu... and Ubuntu was able to write on NTFS; would it be possible in OpenSuse?

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Write To NTFS From 11.1 Unless Superuser

Dec 19, 2009

I've got a triple boot system here (W7,XP,OpenSUSE 11.1). Several windows partitions are mounted as part of the standard opensuse install. I can write to them from opensuse only when I am superuser. I suspect I need to tweak mtab? Here is my ftab followed by mtab: Any ideas?

++++ etc/ftab +++++
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST31500341AS_9VS2CGVN-part5 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST31500341AS_9VS2CGVN-part6 / ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST31500341AS_9VS2CGVN-part7 /home ext3 acl,user_xattr 1 2

OpenSUSE Install :: Can Only Write NTFS As Root

May 16, 2011

After the fresh installation of openSUSE 11.4 x64 (Gnome 2.32.1) my NTFS drives were mounted automatically. However, I can only write those partitions as root. I' ve already tried everything I found on the internet, but none of those solutions worked and as a rookie, I haven't got any idea how to proceed. My original FSTAB looked like this:

Code:

/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS545050B9A300_100708PBN403B7HMV4WL-part6 swap swap defaults 0 0
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS545050B9A300_100708PBN403B7HMV4WL-part7 / ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 1
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-Hitachi_HTS545050B9A300_100708PBN403B7HMV4WL-part8 /home ext4 acl,user_xattr 1 2

[code]....

I also installed ntfs-config and according to it my drives are supposed to be writeable (although that might refer to my root account). But none of the above steps made my NTFS partitions writeable for a non-root account. I restarted my system after each time I changed the content of FTSAB.

Ubuntu :: 11.04 Freeze (hang) Ntfs Partition Read Write Access?

Jun 4, 2011

I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 64 bit desktop version on ext4 partition without swap. I have maximus iv extreme motherboard with 8 Gbytes RAM. Using 3 internal ntfs formatted hard drives and 3 external ntfs usb 2.0 hard drives. When I am trying to copy or move files FROM or TO any ntfs partiton it is 90 percent chance it is going to freeze. For copy/moving files I am using krusader run as ROOT or as user without root privilege or Nautilus as user without root privilege. It wasn't possible to switch to another terminal - it simply does not react on keyboard or mouse input and only hard reset is possible (scares me because of ntfs disks)From this point of view I have suspicious on ntfs driver but:I am completely beginner in linux and I am looking for help to navigate me how to investigate to find what is causing the problem eventually to solve it?

According to my experience it seems to does not matter if hard disk is internal or external connected through SATA II or SATA III or USB 2.0. I have tried to manipulate with ntfspartitions through the vmware or virualbox or truecrypt software or just do a simplecopy/move files - it have has always the same results - freeze. There is not possible to say how long it is going to work properly and when it is going to freeze - sometimes it's working hour, sometimes it's working couple of seconds - no matter if it is read or write operation/s within ntfs partition.

Hardware :: Access Data On NTFS Disk (RAID 5)

Mar 14, 2010

I am trying to access data that is on a Raid 5 array in Ubuntu... There are 4 installed disks (250gig disks) - 3 of which are setup as a Raid 5 array (the 4th is active but unused). These show up as one large drive (498gig). I have had an issue with the drive where it is no longer allowing Windows to boot - I receive a disk read error on boot (so the OS does not load, obviously!) - what happened was basically I unplugged then replugged in one of the disks which affected the array... I physically reconnected everything as it was, I then had to 'reactivate' the disk in the Raid BIOS... at that point the array seemed OK, was the right size, etc (and was listed as "Optimal" in the Raid BIOS) however, the problem with the disk read error persists.

I have started the machine using Ubuntu v9.10 from a CD (non-destructive mode) and it shows a disk of the right size (ie: on the desktop and in Nautilus it says "498gig Filesystem" ). However, in Nautilus, the disk appears empty with no folders or files on it (even with hidden files shown).... If I view 'Information" for the disk it shows 67gig used space and 399gig free space (which is correct). Also, if I view the disk in Gparted, it shows a disk with about 67gig of used space and 399 free space on a 464gig disk (with 8gig unallocated). One more thing.... when I try the command 'sudo dmraid -tay' it says that there is no raid disk (there are in fact, no drives plugged into IDE or SATA slots - all disk are plugged into the RAID controller card). Anyway, at this stage, I just want to copy the data to a single hard disk if possible and move on.

OpenSUSE Install :: View/access/read The Files From Data Partition?

Dec 1, 2010

I am a total noob when it comes to opensuse. I just read the reviews and comments from forums taht's why I wanna try this alternative. I have 1 physical drive that has two partitions. 1 is dedicated for my windows OS (20 GB) and the other for my data (approx. 100GB).

How can I install opensuse 11.3 to just 1 partition (20GB) and leave my data partition (approx. 100GB) as it is? Can I still view/access/read the files from my data partition after I have successfully install opensuse 11.3 to my Os partition?

Ubuntu :: Mounted Data Stored Where?

Jul 5, 2011

Does anyone know WHERE Ubuntu stores the location for mounted external filesystems and/or servers? I can mount other computers on my network, display the files etc., but CAN NOT find where Ubuntu saves the mounted system data and locations.

I mount a PC on the network, open a file manager window and see everything, but can't find where Ubuntu has that system "mounted". It's NOT in the /mnt folder or anywhere else I can see. I need to find this location to feed it to a program that sets up a remote server. I can't setup the server because the program only "looks" at the local root and doesn't find any external mounts.

OpenSUSE Install :: Partition Info Stored In A Log File?

Jul 1, 2011

having repartitioned a disk yesterday but uwisely not obliterating a DOS OEM partition, came down to find the machine had woken up & booted the wrong disk (one I partitioned but without ne OS); with apparently dead (unwilling to seek main drive).

Trouble is the OEM diagnostics was old DOS and likes to **** on other disk partition tables and it seems to have got run, from what was the OEM Windows disk. Now I've fixed that, it seems to be screwed partition table issue.

No problem, it happened before and I recovered with gpart(8) & a spot of tweaking, but due to "redevelopment" I've now got my partition table backups on the disk that's lost. The old backup of them, got tidied. gpart's for once only finding the partitions I don't care about eg) swap & a Windows 7 NTFS backup partition.

Have some logfiles from 11.1 days, which may if it gets recorded somewhere by YaST or other in /var/log actually have the table output. Any one happen to know, where to look as a time saver?

I'd like to get these system partitions back, as I put in bugs on 12.1 M2, as well as an 11.4 and older 11.2 install for comparison. Wasn't planning on re-installing, when I get asked to try something later on.

Ubuntu Installation :: Lose Data That Already Stored On PC - Run OK In Netbook?

Jul 26, 2010

I am an Apple user who ended up buying a netbook with XP installed on it. I got the Acer Aspire One zg5 refurb, because it was super cheap. Problem is, I noticed I hate the Windows experience and I would like to have something similar to Mac in this computer, and I've had some casual experience with linux before (through a live CD that a friend gave me). However, I need to keep the XP running on this thing because I need it for work. The main use that I have this netbook for is to take up notes, do some light music/video editing (for which I have to admit XP has been strangely okayish), listen to music, browse the web, among other things. I would like to install Linux in this because it offers great tools for these functions, and I need to have those on the run. So I thought I would try to double-boot this computer with XP and Ubuntu, but I am sort of a beginner on this aspect.

My questions are what follows: If I use the GParted that comes with the Ubuntu 10.04 installation disk, will I lose the data that I have already stored on this PC? If my computer isn't able to give the needed resolution to run Ubuntu, would it still run OK in the netbook? Will my computer run OK if I make it double-boot? Would it be too much of a hassle for its Atom processor to do this? I would like to install some of the apps that come with the Ubuntu Studio version if I can make the system double-boot. Is this possible? Can I customize the desktop version of ubuntu to give me some ot
her color for the taskbar instead of the blackish gray that is set by default?

Software :: Unable To Find Any Stored Data In Kwalletmanager

Oct 6, 2010

I'm probably doing something stupid, but I thought I'd ask here, because I'm stumped. I'm on slackware 12.2, KDE 3.5 and AIR 2.02.When Echofon abruptly stopped linux support, I switched to tweetdeck (v. 0.34.3.2). It worked great, and they recently pushed a new update. I installed it, deleted the ELS directory in ~/.appdata/Adobe/AIR, and it was unable to find any stored data in kwalletmanager. (I got the error that it wasn't able to find any stored data and that AIR isn't installed properly--the error one gets when tweetdeck is started without kwalletmanager running.)

I deleted the entry in kwalletmanager for AIR, deleted the ELS directory again, and restarted it. Same error, and no new entry in kwalletmanager was made. I downgraded to the previous version (0.32.3.2), and it worked perfectly once more.

Ubuntu :: Need To Access Stored Files After Disaster

Jan 4, 2011

I am new to Linux. I was running Ubuntu 10.04. While downloading software, one of my downloads changed changed my OS to Xubuntu. From browsing the available software, I surmised(wrongfully it turned out) that files starting were X files. In Synaptic, I deleted all files starting with X. This I found is a form of hari kari. When I boot up now, I have a choice of straight to Ubuntu or "Help" mode. If I boot up straight, I get to Ubuntu logo and it hangs up running the dots between red and green and I give a warm boot to restart. If I choose the "Help" route, I go thru what a windows user would call DOS commands or activity. At the end of whatever it is doing, it asks for user ID and password. I give it those and I am given a command line. I don't know what to do with this. I would like to access my stored files and save them. If nothing can be done to save them, I will just start over by reinstalling 10.04. BTW I am running 7.1 from an old boot disc. Is there some way that I can retrieve my files?

Debian :: Can't Write To USB HDD With NTFS

Dec 26, 2010

The task is to create a TrueCrypt file on a buddy's USB HDD and copy a bunch of my stuff to the file. He runs Win7 so disk has NTFS. He has data on it that I don't want to compromise. Disk then goes back to him to run under Win7.The disk automounts just fine. Here's the mtab line:/dev/sdb1 /media/OneTouch440Plus ntfs rw,nosuid,nodev,uhelper=hal,uid=1000.Read (as user) is no problem. It looks like I should (as user) be able to write to it but I can't. Permissions show user as owner but read-only and can't be changed by owner. I've tried an fstab entry and mounting from CLI but no luck. I have not tried to manipulate the disk files with chown/chmod out of concern I might compromise other files on the drive.
