OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Find /dev/sda1 After Update From Suse 11.2

May 22, 2011

I used OpenSuse 11.2 and tried to update it to 11.4 from iso, choosing "update" in the installation dialogue. It went ok, but at first boot something failed and I got the following:

"
doing fast boot
FATAL: Module amd74xx not found
FATAL: ide_pci_generic not found

[code]....

Like this. Then if I choose Y, it starts up to the login screen, but the image is blurry and unreadable. It even logs in, but the desktop is still unreadable. When I choose to boot "failsafe" mode, it boots normally, all graphics look ok. What could I do to boot normal system? I have never experienced any problems like this with Suse 11.2. If I go to the console and type mount /dev/sda1 from failsafe boot, it returns "according to mtab, /dev/sda1 is already mounted on /" I have AMD Athlon Dual Core 4850e and nVidia GeForce 6150SE, Suse is the only OS installed.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse 10.2 Want To Update To 11.2?

Jun 13, 2010

I tried to download the Suse 11.2 DVD to do an install. When I went to do the install it failed cause it was corrupt. Not to big of deal, I had an older version of 10.2.Now that I have 10.2 installed, is there a way for me to upgrade this to 11.2 without downloading the Install DVD.I've been away from messing with Linux for a few months so I'm pretty darn rusty. I'll run Linux for awhile and when I get frustrated I'll move back to Windows. I'll mess with that for a few months and then go back to Linux...

OpenSUSE Install :: Unable To Find Active Update Repository For 10.3

Aug 12, 2010

I am trying to update four OpenSUSE 10.3 servers. This worked once on one server, but I have been unable to repeat that success. I use yast's Online Update to select repositories, but at the end of the repository refresh they keep coming back with 'No active update source is available. Exit Online Update now?' I get this error:
Download failed: File /repodata/repomod.xml not found on media: [URL]

It appears to connect to remote repositories, but always fails. Is it realistic for me to expect to update 10.3, or is it a lost cause? I am not ready to jump to 11 yet, but I am required to update them. I am a newb, so I am not clear on the process. Are package versions locked in place for specific versions of OpenSUSE? If so, how can I find out what the final versions were for 10.3 so that I can at least tell my auditors that they are as up-to-date as they can be?

Ubuntu :: Unable To Mount /dev/sda1 - Can't Find Volume

Aug 21, 2010

The problem I'm having didn't seem to be covered in other posts. Despite following what is supposed to be a straigtforward method, I am still unable to mount /dev/sda1.

Using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS LiveCD - Lucid Lynx

sudo /bin/bash

Disk identifier: 0xa08ea08e

I find it strange that fdisk sees the drive but mount doesn't.

SUSE :: Semantik Won't Install: Couldn't Find Cmake

Jun 26, 2010

I'm trying to install Semantik 0.7.3 on OpenSUSE 11.2 and having difficulties with the dependencies. Here's the last message my terminal spit out on my attempt to start building:

--A whole bunch of stuff the forum apparently won't let me post because it thinks it's URLs and I'm too new--

error: could not open /usr/share/kde4/apps/cmake/modules/KDELibsDependencies.cmake
--End

I'd had some problems with dependencies on the way to this message and installed gcc and g++ successfully to solve them. But now it's telling me can't find KDELibsDependencies.cmake. I've checked it out - it's not in the directory. After installing cmake, I'm kind of at the end of my wits - I just don't know where to look further.

Another hint that seems to be connected with it: As I was trying to install rkward 0.5.3 (also today) it had problems with cmake too:

CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake/Modules/FindKDE4.cmake:84 (MESSAGE):

OpenSUSE :: Suse 11.4: Scribus 1.4.0 RC1 Buggy -> Update?

Apr 9, 2011

someone decided for whatever reason to ship Suse 11.4 with a broken version of Scribus. Not only is the application missing in the KDE-Menu after installation (had to add it manually) but it is crashing frequently. Whenever one adds new text in a Textbox (which will NOT be formated with the specified default font but the first in the list) and then immediately changes the font without first leaving the input-focus of that box: Segfault / signal 11. I understand that there is a RC2 out by now and the specific error seems to be fixed by that.

Now my question is: After having decided to ship sUSE 11.4 with a RC: Will further RCs and maybe the final release of scribus be shipped by the OpenSuse Update? Or does the user have to manually install a working version of that software?

OpenSUSE :: Suse Update Service For Enterprise Version?

Jul 17, 2011

Last winter we had the intention of using VMWare branded Novell Suse Enterprise as we were going to be getting the licenses/subscription through the purchase of Vsphere. Since that time we have set up 4 VMs, and have been testing an application that will soon be going into production status. However a new issue has arisen. As we are over budget we will not get the Vsphere license (which included Suse subscription). We also found that the added features of a Vsphere license do not really add anything over the free ESX hypervisor.

On the one hand these servers have all been configured precisely, on the other hand we have no update service from which I understand we would need a Novell subscription. Most of the repositories we have added are external to Novell, meaning they are community ones. So my questions are this:

1.) Can we use Opensuse community repositories for the Online Update?

2.) If not is there a way to easily 'convert' Enterprise Suse to Opensuse?

Obviously what we first want to avoid is having to do a brand new install of Opensuse and spend the time moving data from the old to the new. One of the issues that has caused the delay and over runs is that the application we will be deploying has not lived up to its promises, and has caused considerable amount of time configuring, tweaking, and de-bugging.

SUSE :: How To Update SUSE 10 Sp2 Without Corrupting Files

Jun 16, 2009

I have a SUSE 10 sp2 server that I am using for hosting VMware and virtual machines. I have installed the basic host machine with only file server enabled (no dns, dhcp, print services or anything else). This is the fifth time I have had to reinstall because after I applied all the updates the system downloaded, it would not boot with a cd/dvdrom mounted. I tried everything I knew hot to do, which I admit isn't much (edited the fstab, tried to mount through command line) but nothing brought it back.

this all started because I had the entire machine loaded with VMware, two virtual machines, and all was well until I decided to update the OES2 sp1 virtual machines. All manor of issues cropped up like corn in the summer. So I reloaded after a week because I couldn't fix the problems and decided in my limited knowledge the updates probably caused the issues, and there was no undoing the updates. I assume (dangerous as that may be) that I applied too many updates to my bare system, but I would like a more experienced opinion.

OpenSUSE Install :: Suse Install Formatted User Data

Sep 11, 2010

I have installed Suse on my Windows Vista 64bit machine a couple of times, but the last time I did it - after a disk change - presented some unanticipated problems. Prior to install, Windows Disk Management (whose output I was unable to paste into this question) showed that my disks were laid out as follows:

[Code].....

Disk 0 is a Seagate ATA drive, while Disk 1 is a Western Digital Ext HDD Usb Device. Looking back, I think I should have carved out a partition after M before installing Suse, but I was uncertain whether to make it a logical one or a primary, and in the past the installation has taken the 25 or so gig it needed from the last defined partition on disk 0. This time, however, it went after disk 1, and reformatted the entire drive, deleting about 300 gig of user data, including my system backup. What really suprised me is that it took up the entire drive: 2 gig for the swapfile, then a 20 gig partition, and all the rest for the third partition.

This is not what I would have expected. I especially would not have expected the installation to re-format user data. In any case, I did not want Suse on disk 1, so I reformatted the drive and then used my Partition Manager to rebuild the boot Mbr. So now, I am able to boot into windows, do not have Suse on my machine, but have lost critical data. My disks are now back to the way they were when I started (see above), except that drive F is now all free space, except for my latest backup. My question is how do I ensure, when I reinstall Suse, that it will choose disk0 for the installation and will not overlay any of the data that I have on that drive.

OpenSUSE Install :: Cannot Install Suse - Does Not Recognize My CD/DVD Device

Jul 13, 2010

I built a new pc and want to have Suse again. Unfortunately Suse installation does not recognize my CD/DVD device. So I boot from DVD select installation and a few moments later there's a popup 'make sure cd number 1 is in your drive'. I also did try to load other kernel modules but nothing helps. The only drive which is always recognized is floppy drive.

Here are some details about my system: Asrock P55M Pro board, Intel P55 chipset, 2 SATA HDD's, IDE NEC 2510 DVD writer, BIOS is set to AHCI due to Windows.

I tried following:
Use Suse DVD 11.0, 11.2, x86 or x64
Set BIOS to AHCI, IDE (compatible), IDE (enhanced)
DVD writer NEC was used in my former pc and did install 11.0 without probs.

Installing from HDD is new to 11.2 thus I copied the DVD to a directory. During Installation I can select the correct partition but suse is not able to find repositories.(?)
