OpenSUSE :: [11.2 Gnome] Where To Set Shortname=winnt Mount Option

Where do I set the default mount options for automounted removable drives, like memory cards?Right now the cards are being mounted with shortname=lower. That option causes my (vfat) memory card's files to appear with lowercase letters, but I'm more used to have 8.3-style msdos filenames as uppercase, (unless specifically mixed case). I've tried editing the setting in gconf, as well as editing /usr/share/hal/fdi/policy/10osvendor/20-storage-methods.fdi, nothing works. Mount keeps using shortname=lower, regardless of what settings I put in those 2 locations.Searching the forums gave me those 2 locations above, and nothing too current.

I have the following problem: I can't authorize with my central WinNT 4.0 domain controller. I set up all parameters in YaST, but still can't see any shares or get inet access.I am using gnome and it shows several windows workgroups. While I am trying to open it, gnome shows a window to request my login credentials. I am setting up all thing right and then it shows it again. I tried smbclient utility to login, but still can't login.What can I do about it?Also I have some problems with my http proxy: suse doesn't sent it my login/password while I can easily work with proxy, that doesn't request it

I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

Im trying to install GNOME-3 on top of kde and have GNOME DE option show up in kdm. I have SUSE DVD and have set local(OD) repository priority to 80 in order to get most packages from DVD. Inspite of that YaST pulls packages from online repositories, it may be the latest version. I have 8 MbPS dsl but the YaST download speeds are around 500B. How do I change mirrors of repositories. In my opinion this has nothing to do with ipv6, I use ipv6 for openBSD and it get good browsing speeds. Im trying to set kdm4 login manager but it doesnt start after enabling for YaST-/etc/sysconfig.

I have an openSUSE 11.3 system happily running KDE 4.4.4, and want to add Gnome desktop as an option. I go into YAST->S/W Mgmt->Patterns and click on 'Gnome Desktop Environment' and get this warning - "pattern:gnome-11.3-22.1.x86_64 requires patterns-openSUSE-gnome, but this requirement cannot be provided" (screenshot here). It looks like the conflict is with patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure, which lists the Gnome RPM and pulseaudio as conflicts.
Questions: Is this only for bookkeeping purposes, or is there really a conflict having both desktops on one system? Will I have conflicts with pulseaudio? (I know I can disable it) If I want to go ahead, should I just select deinstallation of the ..._pure RPM?

I have two internal hard drives.I just installed Debian Lenny in the smaller 80GB. But when I try to access the other hard drive it shows:
"Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume"

So I want to get mount/umount option under right click services menu. I went to Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services -> Download New Services and from there I installed KDE CDEmu Emulator and MountISO. But neither of them is showing up in actual context menu. Neither in Dolphin -> Settings -> Configure Dolphin -> Services for that matter. I tried to install them as normal user and as a root. I went to have a peak in /usr/share/kde4/services/ServiceMenus/ but they aren't there as well... It's just me or lots of things seems to be not quite working in 11.3?

I am trying to install Ubuntu because I was unable to succeed in reinstalling my copy of Windows. My computer did not come with a Windows installation CD, so I used a program already on my HDD to do the job, winnt32.exe. When the installation failed due to a missing or corrupted file (hal.dll), I was unable to open Windows or retry installing it, so basically I could do nothing. I have no real preference for Windows over Ubuntu, but I am not crazy about erasing and using the entire disk for Ubuntu, since I would lose my copy of Windows which I paid for when I bought my computer. I thought if I could find the Windows installation files on my HDD and copy them to my external hard drive, I could feel free to reformat my HDD and use it just for Ubuntu, and I would be able to try installing Windows again sometime later if I felt like it. Running my computer on the Ubuntu live CD, I tried to find my Windows installation files, winnt.exe and winnt32.exe, from the I386 folder, but the files are now either invisible somehow or they've been erased. This is strange since everything else on my HDD seems to still be there. Then I thought I could leave windows be and use part of my HDD for Ubuntu, worry about it later. This too is proving difficult, since I am not getting the option to resize my HDD for Ubuntu when I select "specify partitions manually" (according to Ubuntu's official documentation https://help.ubuntu.com/8.04/switchi...titioning.html this should be one of the given options when right-clicking on the HDD).
Thank you for following this, it's not a typical situation for someone to be in, though when a Windows installation has failed and you have no installation CD you don't have many options.
But I basically have just two questions: 1. Why am I unable to find my Windows installation files (winnt.exe and/or winnt32.exe) running my computer on the Ubuntu live CD if everything else on my HDD seems to be there? 2. Why am I not getting the option to resize my HDD for Ubuntu upon selecting "specify partitions manually" during the installation process?

I have been using Linux for a while but I am more used to Debian based distributions. With distributions like Ubuntu, I have been able to get my flash drives to work instantly. However, I have no idea how to mount one in OpenSuse. I do not have much experience in configuring stuff like this because distros usually do this for me.

I Just Recently Installed OpenSUSE with GNOME Desktop and was surprised to know that none of my NTFS Partiitions were mounted to the Linux File System. Earlier I had Installed Open SUSE with KDE Desktop and there were no problems, everything was readily mounted and i could access the NTFS Partitions. I am a Total Newbie To Linux. Give Me The Syntax To Mount The NTFS Partitions in Following Partition Table Acquired with fdisk :
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

I plugged in USB(single fat32 partiton of 2GB) and got message window Cannot mount volume. Invalid mount option when attempting to mount the volume.

Also did check in gparted , dosfsck and fsck.vfat but no errors reported.

when I go to download 11.3 I am presented with the installation medium for a DVD installation with a button that says download DVD. Should there be an option to download an ISO option for a CD installation on this page along with the DVD version? Some of our older machines can only read CD's with a max size of 500+ megs.

I can't mount nfs directory without option "-o nolock".NFS server is slackware 11 and client is Slackware 13 (full installation).I tested with Centos 5.4 and works fine. Using which rpc.lockd print is no rpc.lockd and slackware 11 is /usr/sbin/rpc.lockd.following services starting on client using rc.rpc ( rpc.statd and rpc.portmap)

The HDD is a 500GB internal SATA, The smart claims that the "file system is not clean" but is still green.FSCK ran a few errors and using fsck i copied a new superblock from a backup location, It still won't let me mount and FSCK is still trying to fix a TON of errors. I'm sorry I don't know any of this yet, but I'm concerned that FSCK could be destroying the data on the drive, for example photos and other important things. FSCK is coming with a lot of things to fix, It's gone from trying to fix errors in free blocks of group #1 to over #3000.. Is this safe? Will this work? Can I get rid of whatever caused this problem in the first place?

does someone know what the function from "nodev" mount option is?i'm in a middle of study for OS Hardening, and one of them is Red Hat.From what i get until now, nodev means don't set a character / special devices access in a partition.I don't really understand it, maybe someone can give real example how do this option behave within the system? and what is the side effect turning this option in a filesystem?

I am creating a script for making a public folder in linux. The idea behind is to allow any user to write files in this folder and further each of those files can be used by any user. For this purpose I am using acl. This first requires to set acl as mount option in /etc/fstab which I need to do with help of (awk and sed) command available in linux.
The line below is the fstab entry which I need to make change in.
UUID=e9a3db4b-d8c0-40b4-a661-131e13afea1e
/ext3 relatime,errors=remount-ro 0 1
I want my script to identify this line (most probably with / which denotes the mountpoint) and then add (acl,) without brackets in options. Currently I use the command as below
sed 's/realtime/acl,relatime/' /etc/fstab
but the above command is in reference with (realtime) what I am planning is that my script should be able to find the line which has / and then go to options and add acl there.

I have since quite a long time the problem that files using special characters in their filenames are not displayed in various applications. In console or Thunar I have a special "white questionmark in a rhombus" sign for every special character. It is an XFS partition. I have read a few times that this can be solved by using the iocharset=utf8 option in /etc/fstab, but this option is not recognized and the mount inhibited.
I used other options: utf8 as well as nls=utf8, but that was not recognized neither. What option do I need to specify to enable utf8 for XFS ? Samba works. That means I can play an MP3 file in Windows exported from the XFS disk using Samba, although the special character is then shown as "_" in Windows..

I have made a clean install number of times. At the point where you (I always do this) manually select the partition where you want Ubuntu to be installed there is a option where you want the Mount Point. The options are / /boot /home /tmp /usr etc. up to now I have always used / but I'm not sure effect choosing some of the options would be.

I was trying to know if relatime or noatime was set on a filesystem, but i didn't found the information, neither in /etc/fstab, neither in kernel boot options.
First of all, it seems clear that i don't have the "normal" behaviour on atime:

I have installed Fedora 15 Alpha with GNOME 3. Everything is working fine. However, I can't see any option to hibernate or shutdown.
In the top panel when I click my user name, I only have one option and that is to suspend. Normally I like to hibernate or shutdown. And I can't see any option of what to do when I close my netbook. Normally, I prefer to hibernate.

I have been running Lenny with the non-free nVidia drivers for a while now, but decided to run testing RC2.When I was done my monitor had a solid blue-gray background and the mouse pointer, but none of the GUI parts displayed (blank). After a couple of checks I went back to the gdm logon screen and opened 'sessions' to _not_ find Gnome as one of the choices. So I logged into Gnome(failsafe) and got my full GUI.Console (F1) and xterm also work fine.Trying to get my Gnome Desktop back. GDM is working and I have the session choice for TWM, but with Gnome(failsafe) working I haven't tried it yet to see if it works.

Our office just switched from CentOs to Fedora and I'm trying to get everything set up. Everything is working so farbut im having a problem with my mounted cifs drives. They mount ok, I made directories in /mnt where the drives are readable and accessible. I'm only missing the shortcuts to the mounted drives in nautilus and on the desktop. I've checked the gconf editor and the volumes should be visible.Is there an extra option i have to add in the fstab line to get the shortcuts or something like that?

I have been trying to mount an NFS share from my REHL server for over an hour, and Google was not able to help me. when I use the command:
mount -t nfs server3:/programs /programs
I get the folowing error :
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on server3:/programs,

(for several filesystems (e.g. nfs, cifs) you might
need a /sbin/mount.<type> helper program)

I just discovered that you can automount an ext4 filesystem with acl enabled by running "tune2fs -o acl". (I knew about tune2fs but did not dare to use it until now). However, the acl mount option does not show up in /etc/mtab and /proc/mounts. Can I ignore this, or is there a way of telling the system about the actual mount options?
Edit: I can do "tune2fs -l <device> | grep acl | awk '{print $4}'" and if that isn't empty I can update /etc/mtab with "mount -f -o remount,acl <device>", but like the udev rule I previously messed with this seems lumberingly unelegant to me.
