OpenSUSE Install :: No Devices Matches MBR Identifier

Nov 9, 2010

I've made a bootable USB with 10.3 live CD. I can boot successfully using a 10.3 live CD as long as the USB stick is not plugged in, but if I try to boot from the USB stick, or from the CD when the USB stick is plugged in, I get "No devices matches MBR identifier: !" where the bit after the colon is 2 spaces followed by the exclamation mark. I've seen this message reported elsewhere but never with a blank for the MBR id.I'm running on a Dell Insprion 9100 with 1.5G RAM.

OpenSUSE Install :: Can't Boot LiveCD / 'No Devices Matches MBR Identifier' Error

Jul 5, 2010

I am certain that the problem is not with the CD. It can boot on my laptop. It's the RC2 of OpenSuse 11.3 Gnome. When I try to boot on my PC, I get the error "No devices matches MBR identifier: 0x502eadc3".I had some problems when installing Ubuntu, with HDD partitioning because it's SATA3. I tried several things, chandged from IDE to ACHI in Bios, then after it didn't work I simply plugged out all of the Sata cables but still the same. It should be because of Bios settings I guess.I have Gigabyte X58A-UD3R mainboard. Please help, I really love OpenSuse

OpenSUSE Install :: 11.1 - Two Devices Mounted On One Directory

Jan 11, 2010

I have 3 disks in my PC which are partitioned equally as I use them for Raid 1.The first partition on every disk is a simple ext2 partition for booting. No Raid there. So I mount them as /boot and /boot2 and /boot3. So I can backup my /boot to the other boot directories. That worked for some month and this morning I just want to look if all directories have enough free space left. So I did a df -h and got this:

Code:
Dateisystem Grove Benut Verf Ben% EingehÃĪngt auf
/dev/mapper/system-root
6,0G 301M 5,4G 6% /
udev 1,5G 292K 1,5G 1% /dev
/dev/sdb1 122M 29M 87M 25% /boot
/dev/sdc1 38M 21M 16M 59% /boot2
...
/dev/sda1 122M 29M 87M 25% /boot
As you can see /dev/sda1 and /dev/sdb1 are both mounted on /boot

Here is what mount says:
Code:
/dev/sdb1 on /boot type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
/dev/sdc1 on /boot2 type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)
...
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext2 (ro,acl,user_xattr)

This is no Problem for me as I could just remount it correctly, but I would like to know if this problem is known. I did not change anything by now and this PC is a server which is running 24/7, so I can deliver more debugging Information if someone is interested.

OpenSUSE Install :: Delayed USB Devices At Startup?

Jan 22, 2010

When I reboot, USB keyboard acts just fine for GRUB. Once SUSE begins to boot, I lose the keyboard (numlock light goes off too). Cannot press ESC to watch the boot sequence. Then, at login, there is no mouse or keyboard for about 60 seconds. Then suddenly, they both become active. Why did this start happening?

It has been about a week since my last reboot, so there's been a few config changes and patches, so it's going to be hard to narrow down a culprit. Thought USB configs in /etc/fstab was the problem, but still happening after rolling back changes to a known good config. Re-ran SaX2. Mouse and keyboard look good in the config file. Also, have otherwise healthy USB behavior with thumb drives and in VirtualBox machines. It just acts goofy at boot time.

OpenSUSE Install :: VMWare Doesn't Recognize Usb Devices?

Aug 20, 2009

After a few tribulations, I managed to get VMWare server installed. The only problem is that it will not recognize any usb devices. I installed usb in the virtual machine using the VMWare interface and in preparation for that, I followed the instructions in the tutorial to the letter regarding fstab and the vmx file. Supposedly, at least according to Windows control panel, the usb controllers and interfaces are installed. The VMware web interface says the same thing. However, neither the Device tab on VMWare nor VMware Tools show any usb devices. The usb devices - a printer, removable drive, and magicjack - are all recognized by Linux. How can I get the virtual Windows machine to recognize the devices?

This is crucial since my major use for it is to run the magicjack which is not supported in Linux.

1) to edit /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and insert eth0&eth1 instead of eth_s0_0 & eth_s0_1

2) To rename /etc/sysconfig/network/ifcfg_eth_s0_0 ( and s0_1) to ifcfg_eth0 and ifcfg_eth1 and then reboot ?

OpenSUSE Install :: Get Device IDs From Drive Devices For Fstab Scripting?

Apr 1, 2011

I am trying to write a script to modify /etc/fstab that will add entries for a number of partitions on different disks.

The only thing that I do not know how to do is to obtain a unique id such as the ones in /dev/disk/by-id/ to address by from a given partition (ie /dev/sdb1). In my fstab I noticed that in installation the system added fstab entries that are unique (in /dev/disk/by-id/)

I could simply do /dev/sdb1 and so on, but I would prefer a unique identifier so that each mount point is tied to a partition on a specific and unique physical drive.

i need this to be script-able if possible, if not I would still like to know.

OpenSUSE Install :: "No Bootable Devices Detected"?

Aug 21, 2011

Before I changed to linux, I was on Windows 7. My computer already had 4 different partitions, and would not let me create more. And so, I had to delete one of the partitions. I chose to get rid of the "recovery" partition. I used "Macrium Reflect" to burn a bootable CD of my recovery stuff. Anyways, fast forward to this morning. I got tired of the KDE desktop, and I decided to switch to Gnome. So, I went into windows 7, deleted the three OpenSUSE partitions, and moved the remaining space back to my C: (windows) drive. (don't ask me why :S)

Anyways, so I take a look, after it's done deleting/moving stuff, and I'm told that "no bootable devices detected".. This made me angry, as I am certain I didn't delete any of the windows partitions. So, I thought, I'll just use my recovery disk, because I quite literally, have no personal data on my computer to lose.Except, my recovery disk is not actually bootable. So, then, after screaming in rage, I booted up OpenSUSE from my KDE CD, and was gonna take a look at things in YaST. Except, YaST will not actually open.

OpenSUSE Network :: No Network Devices Recognized On New Install

Feb 24, 2011

Just installed 11.3 kde. When running the live cd both wireless and ethernet devices appeared in the network connections manager utility. I even connected to a wireless AP.I just booted up for the first time and none of these devices are available. There is no network manager icon in the system tray, and when the network manager utility is maually opened the only connection type i can select is vpn.I know that opensuse should be able to recognize these devices since they were available and working via the live cd, so can anyone help me restore them?

One extra piece of info, is that I am sharing a home directory with a gnome ubuntu install. there were a few minor issues i dealt with initially, but i didnt need to change this user's UID like I have had to do in the past so that's good. Each time i open a terminal I get two pieces of output assuming from the bash startup saying something like.URL...I highly doubt that these problems are related, but figured I'd post. Also if someone knows the solution to that as well, that would save me a bit of googling.

I must have wireless enabled under install to get the Intel recognized, but should I also have the RT2870 plugged in and ready to go? Or would it be best to wait until everything else is up and running?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Unique Identifier For A Music File?

Feb 6, 2010

I am looking to understand what would be the optimal or standard way to create a unique id for music files. Something like md5 sum, but taking into consideration that the music files contain some metadata that can be changed. At the end of the day I would like to create a backup database containing all my ratings for the songs. It should be independent from the filename and location.I have seen the libofa, but there does not seem to be much information about it. It is integrated into some GUI tools including Amarok, but they do not do what I want. PUID from Musicbrainz is explicitly closed source based.

In both CentOS 5.5 and FreeBSD 7.4 when I use
Code:

I get the remote windows machine system description just fine. But not in ubuntu.
Searching snmp-net FAQ for the erroe message "Unknown Object Identifier", I got this to work around
Code:
snmpget -v 1 -c public 127.0.0.1 SNMPv2-MIB::system.sysDescr.0
But it not worked either.. Searching "MIB" using apt-file search, I installed "snmp-mibs-downloader", and now
Code:
snmpget -v 1 -c public 127.0.0.1 SNMPv2-MIB::system.sysDescr.0
works.. but
Code:
snmpget -v 1 -c public windows_host system.sysDescr.0
still breaks..
Why it works in CentOS and FreeBSD but not in Ubuntu?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB Devices Randomly Don't Appear After Boot OpenSUSE 10.3

Aug 11, 2011

I have a embedded computer running 10.3 (stuck with that version) that has USB device issues. In reality, it has two USB devices attached, both FTDI FT232 USB to Serial Uart driven hardware. Both usually are at /dev/ttyUSB0 and 1 when everything goes right. The latest FTDI driver is already in the kernel. Randomly however, when it boots one or both will be missing in dev. If we only leave one physically attached before booting, sometimes it comes up ok, the other times there's no listing in /dev/ or lsusb. But when we do run lsusb once and watch the system log, suddenly the device is found and 'attached'. Then it works fine.

I've repeated this with another test USB device (and old cell phone that gets installed as a ceullar modem) and the same thing can happen. It will randomlyy be missing from lsusb listing till lsusb is run once. IE, run it once, no listing, run it again, then it shows up and the system log saya it was just attached. If we leave both, sometimes one device (Call this one A) is ready to go, but device B is missing. If we unplug B, A dissapears from /dev/ and the system log says A was unpluged. The when we reattach B, both show up in /dev/ and the system log reports two USB devices were attached. running lsusb doesn't fix one or both missing when they are both physically attached.

Software :: Unable To Find A Thread That Matches?

Aug 24, 2010

I'm not able to find a thread that matches my problem. It must be a software/hardware bug, because sound works normally on a 2nd computer running the same Debian version (lenny), and it also work on the 1st computer running Debian (squeeze). - In fact the sound was working on the 1st computer in one installation of Debian lenny, but not on a 2nd (same) installation on the same computer. - Given that I had fiddled with its settings (for a different reason), and couln't fix it, I decided that the software had now a bug, deleted everything on the partition and cloned the working Linux on it. It had the same problem, so old me thougth that I had a virus in the MBR and wrote zeros all over the H/D; I then checked that the MBR (512 bytes) consisted just of zeros, and reinstalled vista, Debian lenny and Debian squeeze on the totally clean drive. The problem is still there also on a 2nd lenny installation that I tried, but squeeze works well. It's possible that the lenny installation that was previously working, was doing so due to the magic of Debian-update, but I don't know. The guilty computer is a Compaq SR5760AN (mobo pegatron violet M2N78-LA) with nVidia 0774 chipset and realtek HDA integrated audio. If it's relevant, the DVD drive is HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH15L, video is Radeon HD3450, and CPU is AMD Phenom 9650 quad core.If I use alsaconf, it comes up with 'snd-hda-intel' but there seem not to be any intel chip on the machine, and squeeze works and lenny DID also work.
