I am on openSUSE 11.0 with kernel 2.6.27.7-9-pae System has been working well for many months. Today I boot and attempts to login through the GUI as any user (including root) fail, presenting the message: Authentication failed However, the machine is running. If I switch to a console using Alt-F1 I can login as a user and su to root. Also, samba is working and a Windows machine can connect to shares as it has for some time. I have been looking around the net for some way that the GUI might have been configured for a different authentication, such as LDAP, that I am not running. There are many places to find the GUI tools described, but I cannot find one that describes command line configuration.
Do you think this authentication reconfiguration might be the problem? If so, how can I tell and how can I change it? What has changed most recently is that yesterday I installed the Google Chrome browser. Appeared to install correctly and was working.
Now i will try to explain my problem.I just installed fresh 11.04 openSuSe 64bit.After doing all the configuration I rebooted and tried to login.Nothing happened.Googled some things, tried ctrl alt f1 and login as root, also tried to login as root, even changed my root password to be sure.Still, nothing happens, except for the thing that everytime I try to login as root it says authentication failed, but if i type my password bad it says bad password.
I've been using Ubuntu since 6.04, not a linux guru by any means but can usually get myself out of trouble.
So, the issue... I installed 8.04 on my mother's laptop some time back as she was having trouble keeping Win 2000 running (she has a low spec no-name generic laptop btw). I live in Autsralia and she in England, i thought i could better support her if she was running Ubuntu... All has been well with 8.04 but with the new LTS release (10.04) i thought i'd talk her through the upgrade... Did the online upgrade via Update Manager, all seemed to go OK but when she went to log on after restart she got an error saying 'authentication failed' even though we are 100% sure we have the user name and password correct... Tried to do a ctrl+alt+F1 to by pass the GUI log on but couldn't get the terminal session to open up, just got a black screen - no command prompt.
So... thought OK re-install... downloaded the ISO, burned and sent her a CD in the post... talked her through the re-install, all seemed to go well (again) - BUT, after restart, couldn't log in "authentication failed" again...
So, remember i'm trying to talk a novice through all this... any thoughts!?!
If i can get her to log in i can then support her via some kind of remote sesion or other screen share... and it wont cost me a small fortune in international calls!!! But if i can't get a log in, i'm dead in the water!?
If I am running a script, let's say a install script. Is there a way to make Su repeat authentication rather then just returning "Authentication failed" and continuing the script?
i seem to encounter lots of little troubles here and there... just need to get used to it.
now i`ve downloaded skype for opensuse and when i dbl click on it, it says: "you have failed to provide correct authentication please check any password or account settings" but it doesnt ask me anything before the error..
I'm extremely new to SuSE Linux. I wanted to move away from Windows and so I decided to reload my Desktop with SuSE linux.I have had no trouble until now. I'm trying to connect to my work VPN connection. From my laptop (which unfortunately is Vista) I'm able to connect without any issues. However, when I tried out the KVPN application on my SuSE linux, it just doesn't work. I get the error: Authentification has failed. As a side note, when I type ping google, the packets are received 100% but when I ping my company address, no packets are received. Hope this info is useful.
Subprocess failed. Error: RPM failed: installing package xen-4.0.0_21091_06-0.1.1.x86_64 needs 27MB on the /boot filesystemI seem not to be able to change the size of the /boot, but 11.2 loads okay but not 11.3There only 19MB left from 66 and I can't make it bigger, I hope there is someone thathas seen this. I would like to see some of the update with XEN.
Today i upgraded my system and started getting error when i update, install or remove a package. The error isn't restricted only to one repository so i thing something is wrong with my system.
I've got a server that was running 11.0 and was set up so that a number of other machines could connect to it via ssh without needing a password by using rsa key authentication. This has worked for a couple of years without problem. I have just progressively upgraded 11.0->11.1, 11.1->11.2 and 11.2->11.3 so now I'm running 11.3 and the above authentication is not working.
My logs show the errors gkr-pam: couldn't get the password from user: Conversation error error: ssh_msg_send: write pam_unix2(sshd:auth): conversation failed error: ssh_msg_send: write
when the automated logins are attempted. Are there any configuration changes that need to be made to get this to work again with 11.3?
When I try to run the Online Updates to the system through Yast I get the following errors for each package:

I have just installed Fedora 15 on my laptop, Now i am trying to install some programs like .... skype, drivers to my printer etc but i get this message: Failed to obtain authentication.... when the installer is trying to solve dependensies...
I have tried to log in as su but i cant that ether due to fail password or username... that is the message i get at the log inn screen.
I have been used NX client on windows 7 connected to ubuntu with NX client/node/server with no issues. The matter started when I have formatted Ubuntu and reinstalled NX, from that NX connects but shows a key error as follows:
NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 4328 NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
I just finished following the instructions found here to install FreeNX on my ubuntu 10.04 server. It went smoothly, just used the default keys.Once I had that all set up I scrolled down and followed the instructions to set up the client and that went fine as well.My problem is with actually using the program. When I try to log in I get the error "Authentication failed for user tony" (my username). Do I need to change anything in the configuration other than setting it to use gnome and putting in the host address?oes it make a difference that my ssh settings only allow rsa login? I logged into the server with ssh to see if that helped but it did not. I even tried using the ssh key with the FreeNX Client but that did not work
I am trying to setup Postfix along with dovecot on RHEL4. I have done the necessary settings in dovecot.conf, yet I am not able to log into the POP3 server. The error I can see through WireShark/Ethereal is "Err- Authentication failed" Some of the important settings in /etc/dovecot.conf are
i am using fedora 12(32 bit),when i tryed to uninstall program pidgin from system->administration->add/remove programs i got an error message saying tat YOU FAILED TO PROVID PROPER AUTHENTICATION,so i was jst wondering if we can sign in as root through gui.the problem with my pidgin app was that whenever i tryed to start that application, it appears for like 4-5 sec and then disappears! so i thought of reinstalling the pidgin.
Im using CenOs 5 and have install a mail system(postfix+dovecot),when I trying to enable selinux for enforcing mode and i'm have some issue, the user authentication failed. How can i to fix this problem?
Above mentioned is my configuration. when i try to connect client with SSH it is not sending a request for authenticating user to RADIUS server. what else configuration i have to do, or if there are any mistakes in my configuration
If your machine is connected to the Internet, you'll probably want to disallow ssh password authentication (which is advised but not mandatory). Edit the /etc/ssh/sshd_config file and change/add the following lines:
PasswordAuthentication no AllowUsers nx
Don't forget to restart the sshd daemon after making that change: service sshd restart I already have PasswordAuthentication yes in my file as I need it to login to the server through ssh. Do I just skip that line and only add AllowUsers nx mynxuser at the end? Also, I followed the rest of the manual and when I tried the client on Windows it failed: I put in a user and password to login but shouldn't it be using the key instead? I think the problem is related to the above due to:
Quote:
NX> 203 NXSSH running with pid: 1428 NX> 285 Enabling check on switch command NX> 285 Enabling skip of SSH config files
I apologize first because I do not know if this is the right section for my problem, but I could not find anything more suitable. I have an Asus 900 with Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10:04 In a nutshell: I realized today, trying to install a new program with Ubuntu Software Center, that I can not anymore authenticate myself as root. Of course I have not changed the password, but the old one is not anymore accepted ("Authentication failed").
The interesting thing is that I can install programs without problems (using the same old password) with the package manager in Administrative Tools (synaptic). Here, the authentication works well. Opening a terminal, I can use sudo to run any command by providing my password, with no problem at all. Following some guides found on the web, I reset the root password (supplying the same one as before) and everything went well. Only .... nothing has changed! Ubuntu center software authentication always fails.
What could have happened? Maybe I did some mistake by editing /etc/sudoers to solve another problem some days ago. Ubuntu told me that my username was not in the sudoers file, so I resolved it by adding to /etc/sudoers the line myusername ALL = (ALL) ALL
I checked the contents of the file and, apart from this line added, it is as it was before (I compared with that on another PC with Ubuntu). Can anyone make some sense out of it? Starting from the fact that the package manager does function ... but software center does not.
I spend all day, trying to make bluetooth working with my phone Nokia 2600. First, i try'it with bluez-utils 3.7, and later with 3.9, but i no luck. So, what i have. I use hcitool to scan for my device, and find'it. Next, i connect to my phone with success. Then i try pairing with my phone, using "auth", but here i got error: HCI authentication request failed: Input/output error
the laptop of my friend runs ubuntu through wubi. The system suddenly freezed and she restarted it manually. After doing a check disk and automatically repaired some packages(unfortunately she doesn't remember what exactly, only just inode information appeared), she can't log in as when she types her username and password the answer is authentication failed. We tried to change the password through recovery mode but nothing happened.
1. Do you have something to propose to solve the login problem? 2. If not how can i access and back up her ubuntu documents through windows?
I'm trying to restrict command line ssh and yet keep NoMachine working, so I followed this post [URL]... and tried adding this to /etc/ssh/sshd_config:
On restarting the ssh daemon other users can't login by the terminal, but I can. However, NoMachine won't log me in. I get: NX> 502 ERROR: Public key authentication failed. As a server side check:
I want to use nomachine, instead of freenx, and well it isn't working. SSH server works and all, because freenx works., same for neatx. But I hear with nomachine you can see the main display of the computer? Is this true? Well one way to find out, but whenever I try to login I get: Authentication failed for user x. I don't know why, neatx and freenx worked, even x2go, but not this.
I was trying to install winbind on a RHEL5 machine and I had to reboot the RHEL machine. When it came back up, I'm not able to log in as root or any other user. When I use root and give a random password, it says invalid username or password but when I use the correct password, I get an Authentication failed pop up box (under GUI). SSh window says invalid password for random passwords and the SSH window disappears when I type in the right password. Can you please let me know if I can somehow get back in by stopping any of the services
My Redhat 5.3 desktop running on an AMD 64 system was not receiving the updates from rhn until a few days ago when it started checking in and downloading updates. The updates crashed generating bug reports. I tried running yum-complete-transaction command, it aborted also. I found a knowledge base article with instructions on how to rebuild the rpm database which I followed. After completing the procedure I tried to reboot. The system gets to the logon screen and then I get the message Authentication Failed and the system locks up. The commands I ran are:
rm /var/lib/rpm/__db* rpm -rebuilddb yum clean all
I am also seeing a message during boot up that the module libxml2 is missing and when I try to download the package from rhn yum cannot find the server.
I have installed keberos on my suse machine, but after installation now I am not able to login in it even with the root password. I search over the internet but could not find the solution. What to do now and how to configure Kerberos on a local machine with only local users authentication. I mean client and server both are on the same machine.
