OpenSUSE Install :: Autostart In GNOME But Not KDE?
Sep 3, 2011
I'm a KDE fan giving GNOME Shell a try, and I find I like it better with a dock. The one in GNOME Shell extensions is still primitive, so I installed Cairo and set it to start automatically, but then I found it starting in KDE too, where I prefer the Plasma Panel. So I disabled it for autostart and checked "Restore Programs" in the Startup Manager instead, but that didn't do the trick. Now I'm thinking that instead of an autostart entry for Cairo dock, I should have one for a script that says, "IF running GNOME, THEN launch Cairo, ELSE leave well enough alone." Can anyone here tell me how to do that? I've never written a script, but I figure the internet can help me with the basics; the piece I'll need is a way to check whether I'm in GNOME.

Autostart kinternet with Gnome?
I recently switched desktops. Kinternet connects fine with Gnome, but it doesn't start up with Gnome. I tried putting kinternet into the Gnome startup, but kinternet errors when it starts.

I've tried creating .desktop entries in ~/.config/autostart and /etc/xdg/autostart, the contents as follows
Code: Select all[Desktop Entry]
Name=SetResolution
Comment=Fix resolution in VMWare
Exec=/home/me/gnome-autoruns/set_1920x1080.sh
Terminal=false
Type=Application
X-GNOME-Autostart-enabled=true
But it simply never runs, I am stuck with an incorrect resolution every time I login. (VMWare guest with virtual display does not detect 1920x1080)
The script is as follows, and works when run from the command line
Code: Select all#!/bin/bash
echo Setting mode to 1920x1080 from ~/gnome-autoruns/set_1920x1080.sh
xrandr --newmode "1920x1080_60.00"Â 173.00Â 1920 2048 2248 2576Â 1080 1083 1088 1120 -hsync +vsync
xrandr --addmode Virtual1 "1920x1080_60.00"
xrandr --output Virtual1 --mode "1920x1080_60.00"
script is executable to all.

I installed 'Alarm Clock' from the Software Center and would like to have said app autostarts. There is an option in Alarm Clock to autostart with Gnome but that doesn't work so I assume the reason being I'm not root.
How to autostart Alarm Clock?
Also, in System > Preferences > Startup Applications, the 'Add' asks for a command. Is this like Windows whereas I simply point it to the app I want started? I don't even know where apps are installed. Who said ignorance is bliss?

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;
GNOME failed to load telling me:
Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.
So I
Code:
To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:
Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.
So I try
Code:
To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error
Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.
So I
Code:
And get the following
I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run
Code:
On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run
Code:
To mount the device.
I end up with:
Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)
So, I
Code:
And see 9 partitionitions
Code:
Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get
plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.
I try
Code:
On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try
Code:
And run into the error:
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)
Good thing is there is a
Code:
Since space is a problem, I
Code:
On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to
Code:
I still get the error
cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override
Code:
For package update tells me
cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w
Code:
For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.

I edited my menu using alacarte. There was an unchecked entry of "Panel", so I deleted that entry. After a reboot, my gnome-panel autostarts no more. I reset everythin in alacarte, but I still have to start gnome-panel manually.
How is that possible? Why depends a simple menu entry from the boot configuration? I hate this so much, because I've made 14 reinstalls the last 3 weeks because of those stupid fails. Is there anybody out there having a solution for me (except reinstalling Ubuntu.

I got autostart working on 11.2/gnome, but I've switch to kde4.3.1. Duncan on the kde list suggested to manually save a session, but in the session manager there's not a clue how to manually save a session. In gnome I wrote a shell script to start kinternet, but the script has to start after smpppd. That script starts too soon in kde4.The reasoon kinternet doesn't start with the "restart on login" box, is a kde3 app. I have already tried kinternet --kicker, but apparetly kicker starts before smpppd. The script I wrote starts kinternet but with this error:
Error - KInternet Connection to local and remote server refused. Maybe smpppd is not running or you are not member of the group "dialout". Also check the server settings in the dialog "Various Settings". OK
The error to the calling shell looks like this:
Starting kinternet --kicker
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Could not open network socket

I'm trying to set up Virtualbox to run as a service so that it auto starts the VM when the PC boots and shuts down the VM when the PC is shut down.
I've found a set of scripts that do this but set up of the scripts was written for Ubuntu so I'm stuck at one of the steps.
The set of scripts can be found HERE
The part of the install that I'm not sure about is the part in bold. I know what it's trying to do (basically start the script last during the boot process and stop the script first during shutdown) but don't know how to do it in oS.
VBoxTool currently consist only of a set of scripts. With this scripts, virtual machines of VirtualBox in a Linux headless server can be controlled. Start, stop, save, backup and show status of sessions in batch mode from the command line.
Usage and installation is tested only on Ubuntu. Please report if a specific function is not working in another environment, say OpenSUSE, Fedora, etc.

absolutely positive, but I think the following is a bug in/etc/xdg/openbox/autostart.sh
24# Make GTK apps look and behave how they were set up in the gnome config tools
25if test -x /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon >/dev/null; then
26 /usr/lib/gnome-settings-daemon &

For one of the users on my system, knetworkmanager abruptly ceases to autostart once on a while. This happens once in roughly 10-15 days. When that happens, i have to go into .kde4/share/config/networkmanagementrc and manually toggle Autostart=true (from false). This trick works for another 2 weeks or so, before the value of "Autostart" automagically changes to 'false' and i have change it again.I dont mind doing it manually, but the user in question is my mom, and she does not have the know-how to do it herself when i'm not around.

I have a SONY PCG-R505TE laptop with an external CD/DVD, it connects via what I think is a PCMCIA card, the drive came with the laptop and functions fine. I currently have Windows XP running on this laptop, but it's very slow.I downloaded openSUSE-11.3-GNOME-LiveCD-i686.iso and sucessfully burned it to a CD.I have the laptop bios set to boot from CD, and it appears to be doing that no problem. When it boots I first see the welcome screen, then the openSUSE Installer, whether I select the Live (GNOME) option, or the Installation.. it loads the kernel, and then loads the KIWI boot systemit is on the third event, waiting for CD/DVD dvices to appear... that something seems to fail... I then see Failed to detect CD/DVD or USB drivethen a rebootexception and it reboots in 120 seconds.

I've just installed 11.4 and then updated to gnome 3. I've noticed that Nautilus doesn't appear to mount my windows NTFS partition. I find this odd because both Ubuntu and Fedora detect and mount it just fine in Gnome 3 (I've been trying all 3 this week).

Witch packages do i have to install to have a FULL KDE enviroment as if i would have selected KDE when i installed suse? Not just the desktop, but kde apps, themes, etc. Or even better. Is there a "Meta package" that installs everything?

I upgraded from 11.2 gnome to 11.4 gnome. I have not found a way to install Vuze. It does not show up in Software Management. I have read that Packman repository is needed, which I have. I have been searching for some instructions, but only find postings about Vuze that has already been installed.

I installed KDE from a CD. Then decided I wanted to have Gnome has an option. I installed "gnome-desktop" via software manager (as per some other instructions on the forum) but I still have no option to choose Gnome when logging in.
What all do I choose to get the complete Gnome environment? Or is it better (& easier?) to reinstall with a DVD?

I am trying to install OpenSUSE with the 4.7GB install iso that I burned, everything worked fine and I am now in the "Perform Installation" part. It seems to be stuck at that, it says "Preparing disks." and is at 0%. The mouse has the circle loading thing and its moving,I am unable to change the tabs from Slide SHow to Details and cant click . Should I abort and try again? Or does this normally take a long time. Been about 15 minutes.
