OpenSUSE Install :: On Rebotting Bootsplash Disappeared

Apr 22, 2011

I've been running 11.4 for a few weeks with the nvidia driver from the repos. I read somewhere that 'nomodeset' should be added to the kernel line in menu.lst, so I added this manually. However, on rebotting my bootsplash had disappeared. I've since read that I actually didn't need this setting with the repo version of the driver so I removed it, but still no bootsplash.

OpenSUSE Install :: No Bootsplash/console Background After Kernel Update

May 16, 2011

Recently I did a kernel update (compiling it manually with help of SuSE Automatic Kernel Compiler). Everything works fine and I am happy with my own settings, however there is one thing that I would to enable. On the stock kernel there is a openSUSE bootsplash on startup and a nice looking openSUSE background image in console mode. On my newly compiled kernel there is no such a eyecandies. My question is: How to enable them on my own compiled 2.6.38 kernel?

P.S In the attachment you can see what i mean with that background image in console mode, so you get my point. This is the image found on the internet, my system is openSUSE 11.4 (64 bit)

OpenSUSE Install :: Take To Change The Kdm Theme?

Aug 26, 2010

I have installed some kdm themes (ethais, NewEssenceFinal, oxygen, oxygen-air, MIB-Ossigeno-Kdm-Neutral-2.2) that I would like to try out and they are present in "/usr/share/kde4/apps/kdm/themes/".

Changing the theme through SystemSettings>Login Screen changed nothing, logging out still defaulted to the default SUSE theme. So I tried the SysConfig editor through YAST and changed DISPLAYMANAGER_KDM_THEME to the theme I wanted, still no change after logging out. I have also changed DISPLAYMANAGER to kdm4.

Opened the "/etc/sysconfig/displaymanager" file to make sure the correct line had changed, and it was.

I deleted the SUSE theme, again made sure the theme I wanted was selected, but now it defaults to a background wallpaper and rather plain looking login screen. I don't know if this is correct but I am using the folder name of the theme I want as the string I enter into SysConfig. I have even rebooted several times just in case it was required. I have tried this through my regular account, obviously entering my root password when required, and also through the root account itself.

OpenSUSE Install :: KDM: Cannot Apply New Theme On Kde4.4?

Feb 23, 2011

I installed suse kde 4.4 on a new machine using a cd made with suse studio.

I decided to change the login theme. I went into the login manager, downloaded, selected, and applied a new theme. Restarted. Nothing changed. I still had the same old theme pre-installed via suse studio.

I thought it could be a bug with that particular theme. So I downloaded another theme through the login manager. I selected it, and clicked apply. Restarted.... nothing changed...still the old theme.

I thoroughly searched every option in login manager, thinking that I missed a simple setting. Tried everything I could think of. Still same old theme.

So... I decided to delete the theme pre-installed via suse-studio using login manager. Went to the login screen. It changed! But it wasn't the theme I applied. It was a simple theme-less login screen.

Went back to the login manager. I can change the background pic manually, but I can't install any theme!

In OpenSUSE 11.4, I changed my KDM4 theme to KStarboard. All works well except the fact that the background on the login screen is broken into vertical lines just like the original OpenSUSE KDM theme. Is this hardcoded somehow or just a consequence of problems with resolution? My resolution is 1366x768.

I meant a progress of the SUSE loading.

I have Open SUSE 11.1 with GNOME and some software from EDUCATION repo but not a Education release.

Software :: No Bootsplash In Ubuntu 10.04?

Sep 9, 2010

I have installed Ubuntu 10.04. But I don't have a 'bootsplash'/start up screen like this: [URL]... All I have is a blank screen. How do I fix it? Shouldn't it just be there by default? Do I need to install anything extra, like usplash or something? Also exactly what Google apps are available for Linux/Ubuntu now? I read somewhere Google Desktop Search was available. This would rock, as having tried Beagle in the past and not having been all that impressed with it (it lacked the feel of real OS level integration and always just seemed to run like a separate app.), I would be hopeful that Google Desktop search would work a bit better. Has anyone tied it? What's your view? Now that Mac and Windows both have advanced Desktop search integration, it seems that search (or specifically pre-built-in integrated search) is one area where Gnome is still seriously lacking.

Ubuntu :: Current Theme Defaults To Silver Theme For No Reason Randomly On Login

May 4, 2011

For some reason, from time to time on login, as my normal theme starts to load, it changes to some sort of silver theme (a very basic one), and I am unable to change it over to any other theme. Checking the theme being used, it still says my desired one is set, but it is not. Also, no matter what theme I change it to, that basic silver theme is the one being used. This includes a default icon theme, not the one I prefer.

The only option that seems to fix things is a restart, and the hope that on this login it won't mess up like before.I am using Natty, from a fresh install, with Ubuntu Classic as my desktop, and have reinstalled things more than once to try and fix a few of the Natty-related issues, but this one keeps coming back.

Fedora :: Mouse Theme / Only Some Symbols Change / Other Stay Standard Theme

Feb 21, 2011

I updated my laptop from F12 to F14 via preupgrade. After doing so, the standard mouse theme was active. So I installed the one I like again and set it as mouse theme. For some reason it is now a mixture of the one I installed and the standard theme. If I open a place in nautilus the displayed symbol is the right one while waiting, if I open something in control center I get the standard icon. Same problem with drag and drop, I always get the hand from the standard theme. I also tried the former standard theme Bluecurve and it was the same problem. Can anyone tell me what goes wrong with the theme? What has changed in F14, that the older themes won't work?
