View 8 Repliesi want to upgrade to 11.2, however, i am very cautious about losing my files. there are files on this system which i absolutely can not afford to lose, and they are only on this system. which method of upgrade will be the best, best as in safest.

View 9 Replies View RelatedHaving a problem with an unwanted redirection in in a function call. Although this isn't the function it does illustrate the problem:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
doat () {
ALL="sys1 sys2"
for Sys in $ALL;do
echo "---> $Sys <---";
echo $(eval echo $1);
[Code]...
figure out how to get the variable into the command without outputting to the file in the eval statement? So that ssh line that gets executed would look like the following to each iteration of the for loop:
Code:
ssh root@$Sys rpm -qa|sort > /trans/${Sys}-rpm-list.txt;
doat works when the incoming argument doesn't have any redirection in the command.
I have Redhat ES4 installed and am trying to run the following commands
set CMD="ksh - eval $Pfile -csh"
$CMD
$Pfile is a script
and it get the error
ksh: eval: No such file or directory
also, there are no man pages for eval
I am using bash. My question is :
Code:
eval echo \h
eval echo \h
both give output as h, but
Code:
eval echo \\h
gives output as h Why ?
Does eval here just remove backslashes (I know the use of eval in the case where substitutions occur)
So far failed to get either RHEL 6.0 Eval or Centos to install on Virtual Box.
Should it really be that difficult?

I tried to upgrade my KDE to new version (om this moment it's 4.4.2) in many ways.The result is the same:KDE updated, BUT not worked sound (error message for my sound card) and KDE (ConsoleKit error).Which best way to upgrade KDE to 4.4.2/4.4.1 on openSuse 11.2 and how you did that?

I wish to upgrade my desktop, KDE 4.3.5, mainly because of some limitations in AmaroK. Upgrading just Amarok through the KDE update app repo is no good as I loose the scrobbling Last.fm option. So, I just wonder if Last.fm works fine with KDE 4.4.4 on OpenSuSE 11.2? And when I am on to it, if there are some general reasons to upgrade further, 4.5 or perhaps 4.6?

how do you upgrade to KDE 4.7? I'm pretty new to openSUSE (installed it last weekend) and have never had to upgrade before, so I don't know the ropes. The KDE website says that there is a 1-click install available, but the link doesn't work:Binary packages Some Linux/UNIX OS vendors have kindly provided binary packages of KDE 4.7.0 for some versions of their distribution, and in other cases community volunteers have done so.Currently pre-compiled packages are available for:openSUSE packages are available for openSUSE 11.4 (one-click install), for openSUSE 11.3 (one-click install), and openSUSE Factory (one-click install).That copy+paste comes from the bottom of KDE - KDE 4.7.0 Info PageI've looked for 4.7 in the yast repos and tried to do some stuff through zypper but I can't figure it out. I know it only came out yesterday, but it should be possible and stable, right?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI had installed the KDE 4.7 packages through repository listed below, The first thing is windows sometimes refused to minimized when I click on window name on task manager and second thing is when update kernel to 3.0.0.9 via kernel repository it completely fail to boot and logout automatically while now I upgrade kernel to 3 without any problem on KDE 4.6. Because of many improvment in KDE 4.7 especially in multi media that let me run the XBMC (It crash with my current KDE 4.6) I've to upgrade to 4.7. Any advice?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded the KDE version on a new installation of 11.1 on another computer and everything went fine. But today I tried upgrading my computer from 4.2 to 4.3.5 with the one click installer, and in addition to having many dependency issues that I thought I got figured out, everything is messed up on my desktop. I still have the 4.2 panel, and my background is messed up (the background I had set has been replaced with a checker pattern), the lizard icon for the application menu is just a grey circle with a play button, all of my icons and my desktop folder that used to be on the desktop are gone, and nothing is showing in the system tray.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThere are two sets of repos for 4. One is stable and the other is Factory. On the repos page it says this about kde 4.4 Factory: "These repositories feature the KDE packages under development for the upcoming openSUSE release and includes openSUSE specific patches". For reasons that are somewhat involved and that I won't go into right here I am stuck in openSUSE 11.0 and can't upgrade until I get a new machine which will be some time. Is Factory unfinished and will Kde 4.4 Factory work well in 11.0?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Banshee 1.6 (beta 2) 1.5.1. I'm actually interested in is getting the Amazon mp3 extension to work, and I don't see this extension in my current version of Banshee. I tried to upgrade & ended up wiping my whole hard drive & had to re-install 11.2 but I'm sure that was my inexperience more than anything else.
I'm not sure of the proper procedure to upgrade any particular package on 11.2 actually. I just leave them alone & it works great. I could add the Banshee repo (which I have not done) but even if I uninstall 1.6 which I have now, and then re-install the newer app from the repo, it will not work. It says it installs properly (I know this from yesterday) but the program doesn't show up in the menu.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded from openSUSE 11.0 to 11.3. I had a backup archive before the upgrade and wanted to make another one today. I can't because the destination external hard drive is only 500gb. The Yast backup said I had over 300 tb to back up! - which can't be since the physical hard drive is only 40gb. So I attempted to do the same thing from the command line and got the same result.
I started going through the directories, looking at properties. I found that /proc and /var/lib/ntp show 128 tb of unknown and unreadable data.

I was using opensuse kde 11.3 for almost one year. My system is a four-core system and so far was really fast. After upgrading from 11.3 to 11.4 I have noticed that kde(?) is running slow. I can pinpoint exactly the source of the problem but just a few examples.
1. Dolphin takes so much time to load (15 seconds)
2. When I try to do something inside dolphin (like Edit->copy) can take up to 15 seconds to see the menu to appear.
3. Double clicking inside a catalog can take up to 5 seconds
I have same kind of problems with Gwenview. I can not say precisely blame kde, dolphin or gwenview.
I would like to ask your help how can I find what's the problem (any cli command, any log file to check?)
